Valentines’ Day. A day most don’t really hate, because they celebrate on that day.
But Sonic always hated it. All the couples were everywhere; Anytime he’s outside, even for fresh air.
He never knew why he hated valentines…but it all changed one day. The day he met Shadow.
Sonic hated how (and still does!) his heart beat fast and how he just loved Shadow in general. It was so weird for him.
But today was a day for both of them. Sonic finally had someone to celebrate with. Finally.
Shadow woke up early like he always does, plus of course, arguing with his lover early in the morning! Never a day without the bickering.
Sonic walked into the kitchen, yawning and rubbing his eyes. He was still tired. He always was tired.
“Good morning. Took you long enough to get out of bed,” Shadow said, pressing a kiss to Sonic’s forehead. “Yeah….sorry ‘bout that..” Sonic muttered, taking a seat at the table.
“Want to eat?” Shadow asked. Sonic shook his head in denial and Shadow hummed in acknowledgement. “Is it because of….?” “...”
Shadow immedialrty realized why Sonic went quiet and quickly apologized before he caused a problem. “I’m so sorry…I should’ve realized,” Shadow said, holding his boyfriend’s hand.
“Shads, it’s okay. Really.” Shadow sighed. “I hope you’re okay.”

Shadow squeezed Sonic’s hand a little tighter, grounding him. The kitchen was quiet except for the hum of the fridge and the faint morning light spilling in through the window. Valentine’s Day decorations were already up outside, all over the neighbors’ houses—pink banners, heart balloons, everything Sonic usually had a little problem with.
Shadow noticed how quiet Sonic got.
“You don’t have to eat now,” Shadow said softly. “I’m not going to force you.”
Sonic glanced up at him, confused, then relaxed a bit. “....Okay..”
Shadow’s lips curved up in a soft smile, sighing in relief. “Thank you.”
Sonic shifted in his chair, legs now swinging under the table. “ I always feel like I’m ruining things.”
Shadow moved closer, resting his forehead against Sonic’s. “You’re not ruining anything. You make life a bit easier for me.” He paused, then added quietly, “And I want to be with you. Even on the hard days.”
Sonic’s chest tightened. He swallowed, blinking fast. “I still don’t really get why you stay,” he muttered.
Shadow cut him off with a gentle kiss, not rushed, not demanding. Just there.
“I stay,” Shadow said, “because I love you. Not the perfect version. You. Exactly like this.”
Sonic let out a shaky breath, leaning into him. “I still don’t know why I liked you. ,” he admitted.
Shadow smirked a little. “I don’t know why I liked you either.”
“…But,” Sonic added, curling his fingers into Shadow’s sleeve, “that doesn’t matter right now..”
Shadow smiled—small, real, just for him. “Since when did you decide to get all mushy with me?”
Sonic gave Shadow a small shove, cheeks flushed red as he huffed.
……………Was I really the right one for him? His mind would never stop it’s negative thoughts.

Sonic was inside his room, putting up more band posters he received for his birthday last year. His ear twitched as he heard Shadow knock on the door.
“Come in!” Sonic said, a little excited lilt to his voice. Shadow opened the door as he saw his lover all dressed up, and his tail wagging in happiness. “Why are you so excited, hedgehog?” Shadow asked, his voice wrapped with confusion.
A minute later after Sonic didn’t answer, Shadow started looking for something…in the drawers.
"I was thinkin'.. because it's Valentine's day, we just...." "Go on a date? Yes, that's fine," Shadow said, still searching for something.
Sonic made a surprised noise as Shadow guessed what he meant.
Was I really the right one for him…?
His mind asked him almost one million times today.
Shadow finally found what he was looking for, and hid it inside of his pocket. “I guess that’s what you dressed up for?”
Sonic let out a strangled squeak from his throat and nodded. Gods why is Shadow so hot..?? “Yeah…uh..” He lost the words although there were right on the tip of his tongue. I guess Valentines’ Day isn’t for me anyways…
Shadow held his lover’s hand as he walked outside the room. “Come on, hedgehog. Don’t waste time.”’
Sonic slightly stumbled over his own feet as Shadow pulled Sonic along with him.

They were at a small Japanese dessert cafe; Shadow chose it so he was thinking Sonic might enjoy it. Sonic giggled when he saw the place. “I’ve been to a few places like this before!” He said, squeezing his lover’s hand.
Shadow gave Sonic a quick kiss to the cheek, before opening the cafe door for him. “こんにちは、スイーツカフェへようこそ〜!” The Employee greeted, making a small bow.
Sonic bowed as he greeted the Employee. “はい!クリームソーダとティラミスをお願いします。?” The Employee smiled, and got to work. She eventually gave them the order and said: “クリームソーダ+ティラミスセット ¥1,000 !” Sonic’s brain buffered for a second, and then handed the lady around six dollars and forty-six cents. “すみません、もう円を持っていないんです。” He said, apologizing.

The lady just shrugged and accepted the money, telling him it was okay. They sat down at a table and talked the whole the whole time, having an enjoyable moment to themselves. Eventually they went back home with cute gifts like ice cream plushies, or stuffed animals. …Was I really the right one for him? He hated his mind’s overthinking, so he asked Shadow a question.
“Do you think we should step outside just one more time?” Sonic asked, his hands fidgeting with Shadow’s.
Shadow nodded and shifted to stand. “Of course.”

The cold evening air nipped at their cheeks as they stepped back outside, the pastel sunset fading into deep indigo. Snow from earlier that week still clung to the edges of rooftops, glowing faintly under the streetlights. Sonic held the little ice cream plush close to his chest, smiling in that soft way he only ever did when he felt safe.
“You really like it?” Shadow asked quietly.
Sonic nodded, ears flicking. “Yeah. It’s cute. Like… really cute.” He paused, then glanced at Shadow. “You didn’t have to do all this, y’know.”
Shadow’s expression softened in a way most people would miss. “I know.”
They walked side by side, fingers brushing at first before Sonic shyly laced their hands together. The world felt quieter tonight. No missions. No chaos. Just the gentle hum of the city and the warmth between them.
……………Was I really the right one for him?
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Sonic traced circles over the fabric of his plush, cheeks faintly pink. “Today was… really nice.”
Shadow reached up and brushed his thumb gently against Sonic’s cheek. “You deserve nice things.”
Sonic’s heart did that stupid fast beating thing again.
Shadow hesitated. Just slightly. His hand slipped into his pocket, fingers brushing over the small object he’d hidden earlier. His gaze dropped for a second, then returned to Sonic.
“Sonic,” he said softly.
Sonic looked up, blinking. “Yeah?”
Shadow took a slow breath.
“Sonic… I have something to ask you.”
His ears perked up as Shadow took a deep breath.
“I really don’t want to make this long, but I know that we’ve been together for 3 years, so let me stop being such a coward and ask this question. Sonic the Hedgehog, will you marry me?
The words didn’t feel real at first.
They just hung there in the quiet air, soft but heavier than anything else that had ever been said between them.
Sonic sucked in a breath.
“…what?”
He was kneeling. Actually kneeling. Hands shaking just slightly as he held the ring out, eyes wide and vulnerable in a way he’d never seen before.
“I know it’s not perfect,” Shadow said quickly, voice catching. “I know I mess up. I know I overthink everything. But I don’t want a future that doesn’t have you in it. I don’t want holidays without you. I don’t want to wake up and not reach for you.”
Sonic’s vision blurred.
“You’re my comfort person,” he continued, softer now. “You’re my safe place. Even when I’m scared, even when I’m stupid, even when I don’t say it enough… I love you. I love you more than I know how to explain.”
Sonic’s hands came up to cover his mouth, lips trembling.
“You don’t have to answer right away,” he added quickly, anxious. “I just— I needed you to know that I choose you. Every time. I will always choose you.”
The silence stretched for half a second.
Then Sonic dropped to his knees in front of him.
“You silly hedgehog,” he whispered, tears finally spilling over. “Of course I’ll marry you.”
Shadow’s breath hitched like he’d been underwater and finally came up for air.
“Really?”
“Yes,” He laughed through tears. “Yes. A thousand times yes.”
He let out a broken, relieved laugh as they both leaned forward at the same time, foreheads pressing together. His hands were still shaking as he slid the ring onto Sonic’s finger.
It fit perfectly.
they both just stared at it for a moment — not because of the ring, but because of what it meant.
He leaned in first this time, kissing Sonic soft and slow, like he was afraid the moment might disappear if he moved too fast.
When Sonic pulled away, he wrapped his arms around Shadow, holding tight.
“I choose you too,” he whispered against his shoulder.
And for the first time in a long while, the future wasn’t something to stress about.
It felt as if he had someone he could trust with his life. Oh wait, he does.
