Whumpuary Day 19: Seeing Double

Notes:

This is the aftermath of my previous work “The Same Empty Chair”. It isn’t truly necessary to read it to understand this one but I still wanted to put this here.

Take care of yourselves <3

Work Text:

At first, when Lucy received a call about a distraught young woman ghosting about in a normally peaceful neighborhood halfway through her night shift, she didn’t think much of it.

That was until she followed the call and found Celina crouched together on the front lawn of a house.

Never in her life had she seen Celina that scattered and lost before. But not her bloody wrists nor her trembling form would compare to the look in her eyes.

Those two little marbles normally overflowing with life were snuffed out, leaving nothing but a shadow of the woman Lucy adored so very much.

Immediately after finding her, Lucy had called for backup. Celina had obviously been abducted and this was no longer something she could handle alone.

“What happened?”, Lucy had dared to ask while guiding Celina to the shop, her steps so frail Lucy was scared she would fall.

“He’s dead.”

“Who?”

Celina remained silent, staring at the backseat Lucy was trying to get her to take a seat on, her body tilting slightly as she muttered:

“He’s dead.”

And that was the only thing Celina uttered the entire time they sat in the opened trunk of the shop, waiting for the paramedics to arrive.

When she carefully wrapped a blanket over her shoulder her skin was cold as ice. Though Celina didn’t shiver.

The heavy silence was lifted the moment the back up arrived and after Lucy filled them in, it didn’t take long before they swarmed out in every direction, knocking on doors and questioning the neighbors, who were already peeking through their windows.

Meanwhile, paramedics came and guided Celina to an ambulance. She heard them talk to her; heard them ask questions she didn’t remember answering- but they kept talking.

It didn’t take long for the search party’s to find the house Celina had been kept in, as well as a body. From what it looked like, he seemed to have killed himself.

Nothing really made a lot of sense until they uncovered the identity of the man.

James Miller. The father of a teenager Celina had shot in the line of duty.

From there on, they began piecing the events together rather quickly, even without Celina’s statement.

And Celina? She sat there in the back of an ambulance, the blanket resting kindly on her shoulders and the gentle hands of the paramedic treating her injuries feeling undeserved.

She focused on the sting; on how her mind reeled with internal panic as the paramedic wrapped a bandage around her wrist.

But everything felt dull. Blurry. Distant.

As she stared along the street, soulless lights shattering the darkness, she still heard her blood rushing through her ears as the faces passing her all began to look the same.

Lucy looked up from her clipboard as a car approached the scene.

John, who had somehow heard of what happened, despite it being the middle of the night jumped out of his car and headed for the ambulance with brisk steps, not paying mind to anything around him.

Lucy could tell how worried he was.

“Celina.”

Her head twitched as she heard her name being called somewhere really far away. Though her eyes refused to sharpen, leaving nothing but the shillouette of a man in front of her.

No words made it out of her mouth as his head parted in the middle and she started seeing double.

He could‘ve been anyone.
