Her Nails are Short for a Reason

Summary:

Robby realizes he might just be a little slow to notice when the people around him are also attracted to the same sex. He didn’t think it was a huge deal, but Dennis insists that he needs exposure therapy to fix his dysfunctioning gay spidey sense.

Or Robby has a broken gay-dar

Notes:

Hi! Just wanted to post this mini fic I wrote on my tumblr @robbys-stethoscope

Work Text:

Robby may be a late in life bisexual, but his gay-dar is so bad it would put a Mormon's wife to shame. When his crush on Dennis was first blossoming, he came to the conclusion that the boy was bone straight and thought he never stood a chance. One time during an already stressful, hair pulling shift, Dana mentions that Santos and Dennis had been living together for the past few months. His heart drops down to his ass

His judgment was so clouded that he never noticed the resident’s slightly limp wrist or occasional Grindr notifications that go off at inconvenient times. It wasn’t until he overheard the boy going over the details of a one night stand with what Robby thought was his live-in girlfriend, that it finally clicked.

Unfortunately Robby’s lack of queer intuition extended to his other coworkers as well.

After completing his hand-offs before he leaves to go home, he pulls Jack aside to ask if Shen and Ellis are sleeping together. Jack laughs in his face for five straight minutes.

“Oh my god,” Jack had to catch his breath and wipe his eyes before continuing.

“You are so lucky Ellis didn’t hear you ask that. Dude, she’s mentioned her girlfriend like ten times.”

“I thought she meant more like a girl who’s also a friend, but now that you tell me, it makes a lot of  sense” he trails off.

“Get with the times, Robinavitch. It’s not 2006 anymore, brother.” Jack gives him a couple heavy pats on the shoulder before returning to work.

So Robby realizes he might just be a little slow to notice when the people around him are also attracted to the same sex. He didn’t think it was a huge deal, but Dennis insists that he needs exposure therapy to fix his dysfunctioning gay spidey sense. It's only when his boyfriend drags him to a gay bar with Trinity that the cogs in his brain start spinning.

“What are you doing here Yolo? Nice rings” He broke away from Dennis after spotting his favorite surgeon ordering a drink at the bar. His eyes focus on the Moscow mule she grabs from the bartender with the multitude of rings clinking against the copper glass. He notices the rings match nicely with her short silvery nails of the same color.

“Thanks. I would ask you the same Rabbit-Bitch, but I see you came with your child bride.” She jokes before taking a sip from her drink.

Robby rolls his eyes as he racks his brain for reasons she could possibly be at a gay bar. His thoughts are interrupted after he sees Santos leisurely stroll over to their spot at the bar, swinging her scantily clad hips to the music.

“Oh Santos, I was just about to ask you if you knew Garcia was-“ Before he got the chance to finish his question, Trinity and Garcia were practically eating each other in front of him.

“Oh!” He squeaks out as he tries to look anywhere but at the scene in front of him

Welp, his question was answered.

Nurse Jesse for some reason has been following Dennis around for the past couple days. At first it was strictly for work related things, but simply collecting samples for some of Dennis’s patients evolved into Jesse leaning over him, showing the boy TikTok’s in the break room. Robby honestly thought it was sweet that more of his colleagues recognize how great his bloodhound is.

Robby finds his favorite R1 waiting for him on a street corner, looking angelic as always under the warm glow of a street lamp. Robby happily strolls over to him so they can begin their walk home.

“You know Jesse gave me his number before I left, and before you say anything, I didn’t take it” Dennis says before slotting their hands together. Robby furrows his eyebrows as glances down at him with confusion.

“Why not? I thought you liked talking to him”

Dennis lets out a small laugh and shakes his head. “Uh, I didn’t give him my number because I’m kinda seeing someone. You know, in case you forgot.”

Robby gives his shoulders a slight shrug before running his free hand through his hair.

“I mean, I don’t know what that has to do with anything.”

“I was just happy that you had someone to talk to about that anime stuff you like. To be honest I thought Jesse was a little too old to be watching-“ Dennis stops their walk abruptly, staring back at the man with wide eyes and a crease in his brow.

“Robby, he was obviously asking me out”

He cocks his head and gives the boy a slight look of disbelief before shoving his hands back in the pockets of his hoodie. “Are you sure? I didn’t even think he liked guys.”

“You were standing right beside me at the hub when he asked if I was free to go out over the weekend.”

“Getting a beer as friends doesn’t count as going out?” Robby questions.

Dennis can only laugh as he turns to tangle their fingers back together so they can continue their walk. Dennis sure hopes Robby isn’t asking any other boys to ‘get a beer as friends’.

“We gotta get your gay-dar fixed, Michael.”

“What’s that?” Robby might just be hopeless, but that’s okay.
