Chapter Text
A deep bellow of a growl comes from behind the trees, along with loud and heavy footsteps.
“It’s too dangerous, we need to abort”. Sir Micheal “The Heart” says.
“No. I can’t let the villagers down. I have to do this”.
‘Will The Wise’ then jumps out and casts a spell to disintegrate the Demogorgon, his spell fails, he tries to redeem himself but the Demogorgon slashes at Will causing him to be knocked to the ground with a great force.
“No!” Mike cries out.
He lowers Will into his lap as he tries to keep him awake by gently tapping his face.
A slight whimper is heard from Will as he tries to fight to stay awake. But it is too late.
Will The Wise’s arms start to go limp as his gaze can be seen starting to wander still into the distance.
Mike jumps up in fear, letting out a terrified scream while breathing heavily and slightly shaking in his bed. He is filled with a slight feeling of relief, aside from his fear.
It was a dream.
Will stubbles into his bedroom, out of breath from running as fast as he could from hearing Mike’s screams.
“Holy shit, are you okay? What happened?” Will says, filled with genuine concern that can be heard in his tone.
Mike is still trying to catch his breath and snap back to reality, assuring himself that it was just a dream. He looks up to see Will hovering over him with his face full of fear.
“Uhm yes- yes, I’m fine.” He says, sounding totally unsure if he really is.
“Are you sure you’re okay? I thought something had happened to you with how loud you had yelled. Was it a nightmare? What was it about?”
“Yes, I’m fine. Just a dream about the past, that’s all.”
Mike lied. He felt embarrassed to tell Will the real dream. But he was still terribly shaken at the feeling that he had lost Will. It felt so real.
It was just a dream.
Mike sits down at the small dining room table as Will puts a few pieces of bread into the toaster to make Mike a small breakfast in hopes to calm his nerves.
Will and Mike have moved in together to this small apartment in New York while Will is studying at a college he had found that specializes in arts. While Mike doesn’t go to college and rarely ever leaves the house as he hasn’t found a passion to go yet. He’s still pretty shaken about everything that has happened even though it’s been months since it’s all stopped.
Mike is still seen visibly uncomfortable while sitting at the table, Will sits at the seat across from him and gives him a worried look. Mike can feel Will staring at him but he refuses to look up because he can’t stop thinking about the look on his face that he had seen in the terrible dream.
“Hey uh, one of my friends from class is throwing a party tonight, do you wanna go? It might help take your mind off.. everything” Will says in an attempt to switch topics and cheer him up.
“Mike?”
“Oh. Sorry. Yeah, a party sounds fun.” he says, still slightly zoned out.
*ding* the toaster calls out
Will turns around to pull the bread out and spreads jam around each slice and gently places it in front of Mike.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Yes, Will. I’m fine, there’s no reason to worry about me.”
Will still feels a bit uneasy leaving Mike alone like this but it’s about time that he has to leave for class.
——————————————————
While Will is out at his classes, Mike sits on the couch and all he can think about is the dream he had.
Why did it scare him so bad? It wasn’t even real. It wasn’t even them, it was their stupid Dungeon & Dragon personas.
He tries to just brush it off and ends up drifting off into a nap.
Mike completely lost track of time, a few hours had passed while he was asleep and Will should be home any minute now.
He finds himself beyond excited for Will to arrive and sits at the counter doing nothing but waiting for him to walk through the door.
In just around ten minutes later, the doorknob rattles and shoots Mike awake as he had been slowly drifting off again.
“Will!” he jumps up and shouts as he walks in.
“Jeez- hi Mike” Will says slightly startled.
Mike is a little flustered at his act and Will seems a bit confused but is found blushing a tad bit in awe at him.
“Are you still on for the party? It’s in just a few hours.”
“Oh yeah! Totally.”
Will is surprised that Mike’s attitude had completely shifted from when he had left, but he was also relieved that he was feeling better.
———————————————————
Quite some time had passed and Will asked Mike if he was ready to go. Mike looks up at him and sees he is dressed up in more fancier clothing than normal, and did he put on a little bit of makeup? Was he expecting to see someone there? Why would he want to see someone there other than him?
“You’re dressed up. Should I be getting ready like you?”
“Oh this?” Will nervously laughs under his breath.
“No, there’s no reason for you to dress up, there’s just gonna be a lot of people from my classes there so I thought I'd try to at least look a little bit put together”. He seems to be even more nervous.
This just made Mike feel even more sceptical.
“Okay, I’ll be out there in just a second”
Mike rushes into his room and throws a little bit of nicer clothes, rather than his ripped up jeans and loosely fitted band shirt that he usually wore as pajamas.
——————————————————
The house that the party was being hosted at was very close to their apartment, probably around 5 minutes, so they decided to walk there.
“Do you want to talk about your dream? It seems to have really shaken you up.” Will says trying to make some conversation, but still worried about why this dream had affected Mike so much.
“Not really.”
Will slowly nods, adding along some awkward silence. This response just makes him worry more about Mike, but he decides to let it go and not talk about it anymore because if Mike won’t open up then there’s no reason to keep bothering him.
The rest of the walk remains silent.
“Well, here we are!” Will says as they slowly arrive at the hosting house.
Mike nods, accompanied with a small awkward smile.
They walk up the porch steps and make it to the doorway as Will knocks on the door and they silently wait for someone to welcome them in.
“Will! You made it!” Mike hears from a random guy standing at the door. Why is he so excited?
They both walk into the house, alongside Will’s classmate.
“So…are you gonna introduce us?” He excitedly says to Will.
“Of course! Mike, this is Carlton. Carlton, this is Mike!”
“Ooo, Mike! I’ve heard a lot about you” He says as he gives Mike a playful shove in the arm.
“You must be Will’s roommate, right?”
Roommate? That’s all he was? Is that all he is to him?
Being downgraded to just Will’s “roommate” frustrated Mike, he was already having a bad day due to his dream and all this did was make it worse.
Mike awkwardly chuckles and tries to throw on a fake smile as best as he could.
“Yup..That’s me.”
Will shoots Mike a small confused look as he catches on that he’s upset.
“Well…How about we get some drinks!” Carlton shouts out to try and break the awkward silence.
“I think that’s a great idea!” Will says as he gives Mike a small head jolt to the table full of drinks, signaling him to tag along.
Mike slightly groans of annoyance under his breath but continues to walk behind him and follow.
The counter is full of different beers and liquors. Mike never really drank very much of anything, but Will was always out at “stupid college parties” so he most likely has.
“Go ahead, grab anything you’d like” Carlton says, gesturing to the table but still making deepened eye contact with Will.
Mike still was not loving how close they seemed to each other but he didn’t want to ruin Will’s night so he, again, just tried to brush it off.
Will and Mike have now made their way over to the sofa positioned in the middle of the room, with both a light beer in hand.
“Are you sure you’re okay, Mike? You still seem a bit off”
“Will. I promise, I’m fine. Please, just have fun and stop worrying about me.”
“You know I can’t just not worry about you”
Mike lets out a small sigh and gives Will a reassuring look.
“I’m fine. Really.”
A few minutes have passed by and they are still seated on the couch and finally talking like normal. This was nice. Just him and Will.
When Mike was with Will like this, it felt like no one else was in the room, just the two of them. together.
Mike’s leg was slightly draped across Will’s knee while Will had his arm wrapped around Mike’s shoulder in exchange.
As they were talking, Mike kept catching himself glancing at Will’s lips.
It’s just an accident. Probably just trying to hear him better, right? Maybe the drinks are getting to him a little quicker than he thought. It’s no big deal!
But apparently, he had been glancing a lot more often than he had thought..
A random girl comes up, appearing in front of Mike and Will, with slightly slurred speech she says,
“Aww, you two are so cute! All cuddled up together, such a cute couple! I wish there were more gay couples around here.”
Will looks a bit flustered and lets out an awkward chuckle while grabbing at his neck in hesitation of what to say back.
Mike looks at Will in panic.
What? A couple?? Why would anyone think that? That’s ridiculous! They’re just friends!
“We’re just friends. Why would you even say something like that?” Mike says in a slightly defensive tone. His face is all red and he feels a sudden rush of heat come over him.
They all exchange awkward looks to each other, the girl seems shocked at the response, but also seems too drunk to even give it a second thought.
“Ok..whatever. My bad.” She says as she shrugs and walks off.
Mike glances back at Will to see him having a confused look with what could only be described as seeming offended.
Shit.
Mike immediately jumps up.
“Oh. Uh- I uh.. I’m gonna go get another drink.” He says trying to avoid eye contact with Will.
He runs towards the counter that was housing the bottles and downs a few shots, one by one. He’s still quite new to drinking so, as you can imagine, those shots hit him quick.
He rushes towards the bathroom, on the other side of the house, where he rushes in, locks the door, and plants himself on the floor by slowly sliding his back down against the door.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
He feels as if he had given Will a feeling that he was being rude, but why would he feel bad? They aren’t a couple anyway? Why would they even think that?
He sits in confusion, trying to gather himself.
What a weird thing for her to accuse.
But, part of him felt like it was right, part of him felt proud when they said that. Like he was glad someone acknowledged Will was his own. Why would he feel that way though? He didn’t own Will. He was just his "roommate" after all.
