    Summary

There is a woman who looks at you. She is heavyset, a crinkle in her brow, with her hair done up in a bun, a handkerchief tied around it. She has a little basket in the crook of her elbow and a wagon of produce and linens and bags. You tense, ready for something, anything. You pray for it to end, for her to take pity on you for half a second, or for her to chastise you. The eyes hurt.

She does neither. She holds out her hand and asks, with a slightly scratchy voice, if you need help getting home.
