Work Text:
Kyle always hated gym classes.
He was never interested in sports. Hell, even simple exercises were too straining for his fragile body. And what didn’t help was the fact that he used to always be the main target of his Milkweed schoolchums in magic dodgeball. With enchanted balls no less!
And although gym classes were much more forgiving in Galaxy Hills, it was still not a walk in the park. Especially when his wand was confiscated.
For this gym class, they were outside, on the sportsgrounds behind the school. It was a warm day, and Kyle was already dreading how sweaty and feverish he will feel after surviving all the physical activities the teachers have prepared for today.
The boys played volleyball, and the girls played tennis.
On one side of the volleyball court was Kyle, Fanboy, Chum Chum and Fankylechum, while on the other side was Duke, Cheech, Chris Chuggy and Michael Johnson.
To be frank, Kyle was just standing in one place and watching the ball getting thrown from player to player over the net for the majority of the game. Whenever the ball did go in his direction and he managed to catch it, he just tossed it to one of his teammates. And sometimes, that teammate turned out to be Fanboy.
“Hey Kyle, don’t you want to be a bit more active?”
“I refuse to waste my precious energy on an useless activity such as this one.”
“Come on Kyle! You’ll have wayyy more fun that way!”
“Yeah!” Chum Chum piped up from nearby. “Don’t you want to help us win?”
“No.”
Honestly, if Kyle had to choose, he would rather play tennis with the girls than to be here and listening to these ninnies. He finds tennis to be way more entertaining than volleyball.
He looked to where the tennis court was, only to see the girls arguing about something and whacking each other with rackets.
Okay maybe not. He’ll stay with the nincompoops.
Kyle returned his attention to the ball, which was now in Duke’s hands. Before he knew it, the ball was hurtling towards Fanboy, who was distracted by a butterfly flying by. “FANBOY WATCH OUT-” Kyle doesn’t know what’s gotten into him, he could care less about his annoying friend/enemy getting hurt, but he pushes Fanboy out of the way anyway, getting the blow instead.
For a moment, the world went dark as his body fell to the ground. Muffled voices called his name while he tried to regain his bearings.
“Kyle! Are you okay?!”
He opened his eyes, and would have been blinded by the sun if it weren’t obscured by Fanboy’s silhouette.
“I have a splitting headache…” He moaned in pain, one of his hands rubbing his forehead.
“I mean, yeah, you did get hit in the head by a ball thrown by Duke. He’s pretty strong.”
“I’M SO SORRY, MAN! I DIDN’T MEAN TO, MAAAN!!!” The jock could be heard in the near distance.
“Ugh… it’s fine, I’ll live.”
“Not if someone doesn’t bring you to Nurse Lady Pam! But do not worry!-” Fanboy suddenly scooped Kyle into his arms. “-I shall carry you!”
“Whuh-” Before Kyle could process the turn of events, Fanboy was already running out of the sportsgrounds and towards the school with him. “You do know that I can still walk, right?-”
“Don’t you worry your big head! I will keep you safe and secure until we get to the nurse’s office!”
Fanboy kept his word. He quickly but carefully carried him all the way there. And while Kyle didn’t show it, he couldn’t be more grateful. He was also surprised at how strong he was, being able to carry him so easily… he immediately shunned those thoughts though.
Once they arrived at Nurse Lady Pam’s office, Fanboy explained to her what happened, she gave Kyle a painkiller and an ice pack, and said that she’ll call his parents so they can pick him up.
Kyle already knew that he’d have to explain to them that his wand was confiscated and therefore was unable to cast a healing spell, so he was thinking about how to word it to them while he laid on the examination table with the ice pack on his forehead. Up until he felt something on his hand. He glanced down to see the familiar purple gloved hand on top of his own.
“Fanboy. Why are you still here.” It was more of a snarky remark than a question. “You’ve already fulfilled your hero duties, so begone with you.” His free hand shooed him away.
“You’re such a good friend for looking out for me earlier… even though I would totally be completely unscathed from that attack.”
Kyle rolled his eyes. “Yeah right, whatever, just go already.”
“You sure you don’t want me to stay?” Fanboy squeezed Kyle’s hand more tightly with worried eyes.
Kyle could practically feel the ice pack melting as his face went red (from irritation, obviously). “Yes I’m sure.” He stated dryly while giving him a death glare.
“Alright then. Dipstick.” He gave him a smirk before leaving.
“You two are so cute!” Nurse Pam commented after finishing the phone call with one of his parents.
“CUTE?! Did you even hear what we were talking about??”
“No, but I can tell you two really like each other. Reminds me of that one time before me and Man-Arctica started dating-” She began to ramble on and on about some sappy moments between her and the superhero. Meanwhile Kyle couldn’t stop replaying everything that happened today in his head.
