“.… Alright what the fuck.”

You really should have seen this coming. You don’t live in a very great area, strange sights were normal around your neighborhood of your apartment, even more-so with the appearance of monsters spilling out of the mountain.

Monsters became a normal sight, sure, but something like this-?

You were just trying to toss out your trash in the back of the building before you saw something glinting in the flicker of the lamppost that was lighting up the street. After you tossed your trash out and took a step closer, you saw a golden color of what looked like a crown. For a minute, it looked like it was just laying on some trash bags, totally normal right?

Yeah no, after a minute of staring, there was a yellow light staring at you.

No words were exchanged after you muttered your confused statement, you just stared at the yellow light and it just stared back at you. You felt a deep searching feeling through your entire being, you were officially creeped out.

“Not my circus, not my monkey, not my circus, not my monkey,” you repeated under your breath and you turned around and walked back into the apartment building, heading up to your apartment room.

You couldn’t get the gaze out of your head even as you worked on the remaining assignments you wanted to get done that night.

It was only for a few minutes but the golden light, it felt so… hateful.

Well, if you were laying next to a dumpster, you’re sure you would look hateful too. Society did not take kindly to homeless people, that was for sure.

You shrugged at yourself. Well, you were sure whatever it was could manage.

You had your own shit to do.

Even if you were actively falling asleep.

“Goddammit,” you cursed as the words on the computer screen blurred for god knows how many times. You rubbed at your eyes with a groan as you leaned back in your seat, staring at the ceiling.

Odd how the black spots in your vision almost looked like they were tinted or outlined with gold.

You shook your head, immediately regretting it when your head spun, taking a minute before you could safely stand up from your desk. Apparently it was time for bed, which was incredibly rude, you weren’t done with that assignment.

.. Of course you could just go back to it and finish it-

Nope, nope, the spike of heaviness in your head very much disagreed with that thought, bedtime it was.

You trudged through the apartment to get into your room (admittedly it wasn’t that far of a walk but it felt like forever), collapsing onto the bed when you were in front of it. You were immediately out for the night until your alarm.

Which was 4 hours later.

You felt so tempted to chuck your phone across the room, but you’d rather not need to go to the repair shop. You sighed heavily as you slid off your bed, face to the floor for a moment, trying to gather the will to live through this day.

You felt like you could hear a low chuckle at your actions but you ignored it, considering it one of the voices in your head laughing at you, you tended to do that. It could’ve also just been through the thin walls.

You groaned as your alarm went off again, having snoozed it previously. Okay, okay, you were getting up. You pulled yourself up into a sitting position, just staring at the ground. A few minutes passed and you yawned, pushing yourself into standing up and stretching. You finally turned off your alarm, turning off DND mode and scrolling through your notifications, which wasn’t much.

Updates on some classes, some channel uploads from shows you watched, the weather forecast, same old same old-

Ah.

You stared at the message notification for a minute before swiping it away and putting your phone on your nightstand.

Lovely.

There goes your mood.

.… Nope you weren’t going to think about this, you were going to firmly shove it away like with everything else, you had things to do.

You left your room, heading to the kitchen for a bottle of water before pausing, looking at the figure sitting on the couch, staring at you. The golden colors reminded you of hours prior. You need that gaze.

You blinked, the mass of… whatever the black substance was, just staring at you. You got the sense it was amused of some kind. Your stomach growled and it reminded you of the time. You pointed at the monster(?). “Alright, you, you’re in my spot, I need to sit there, please move. Furthermore, if I am to die, do it after my lease for the apartment is over, I am not wasting that money.” You went into the kitchen swiftly after that, grabbing a bottle of water and a plate of french toast you made the day before so you wouldn’t need to make anything for breakfast.

It worked well.

You headed back to the living room where your computer was (it was an odd setup for other people sure, but it worked just fine for you), slightly surprised that the monster had indeed moved, though it was standing in front of the door. You internally sighed at the slight black stain on the couch, but whatever, it was dry enough at least, it seemed like just the color stained.

“If you’re standing in front of the door to prevent me from leaving, you can stop. I wasn't planning on going out today,” you said as you turned on your computer and logged into your courses, taking a bite out of the cold french toast.

There was a quiet pause, the only sound being your keyboard as you began finishing up the assignment from last night.

“… Aren’t you scared?” The voice that came from the monster was smooth and dark.

You raised a brow at it. “I frankly don’t care, I have things I need to finish, you’re not bothering me any.” You paused for a minute before adding, “Although if you could prevent leaving stains on my furniture that’d be great.”

You turned your attention back to your computer. “There’s probably some food in the fridge if you’re hungry, help yourself as much as you can with a college student’s diet.”

You nibbled on your cold breakfast, immediately tuning out the monster that was in your apartment. If you were any other person, you probably would have been, or rather you should probably be freaking out.

I mean, there was an unknown monster, one that looked quite dangerous (granted all of them do) in your apartment right now, one that looked quite capable of hurting you. Did you care?

Not in the slightest, you had your schoolwork to worry about.

Now, wasn’t that concerning that that was your priority?

There was a weight on the couch next to you and you wordlessly pushed your plate of french toast closer to it, focusing on your assignment. You were almost done, you just needed a few more sentences!

There was a poke to your cheek and you swatted at it, narrowing your gaze at your assignment. You grabbed another cold piece of french toast before pushing the plate at the monster sitting next to you, wordlessly indicating for them to take the rest.

There was some odd sort of sound you heard, sounding similar to a hum, but you paid it no mind, typing as you chewed. You swallowed the last bite as you entered the last word, immediately submitting it without a second glance, leaning against the couch in relief. Okay. That assignment was done, thank god, you absolutely hated doing it.

You felt a gaze onto you and you cringed slightly. Damn, you actually probably had to focus on the intruder in your place now that you have a minute. You turned and looked at the monster sitting on your couch, finally actually looking at them.

You could hardly tell what kind of monster they were if not for some defining features that pointed out that there was actually bone underneath all of the dark goop.

So, a skeleton covered in some kind of tar.

With some kind of golden accents like the crown and golden eye.

Interesting.

The monster suddenly grinned, a sharp looking expression, and opened its mouth to speak before you interrupted. “So why exactly are you sitting on my couch?”

It looked a little annoyed at being interrupted before going back to its smile. “I followed you home.”

You raised a brow. “Uh huh, and for why?”

It just tilted its head (skull?) at your question, the smile still on its face.

Okay so you weren’t going to get a response then. Lovely.

“Alright, well, you got a name then?”

A crossed expression crossed its face, their teeth gritting. “Not.. one that I am quite fond of anymore.”

“Alright then, no name, I can work with that. I’m just gonna call you stupid shit then.”

Did you have any survival instinct? No, very obviously not.

Because if you did, you’d watch your mouth and put your filter back on but noooo.

You spoke again. “Okay, no name, pronouns.”

“... What?”

“Your pronouns, hand them over, Goldie. What are you referred by?” You expanded on their confusion.

There was a glint of.. something in its visible eye at the name you called it, but it didn’t say anything.

“.. Male? Don’t care.” He(?) seemed to finally settle on.

“Sweet. Now, I got more shit I gotta do, you just gonna stay on the couch and watch me?” You questioned.

You watched Goldie still for a minute before he began to, he seemed to like melt(????) into the cracks of your couch. You blinked, trying to process what exactly just happened before turning back to your computer.

Nope not your problem, nope.

There were other things you could focus on. You just needed to push that interaction out of your mind-

Which was difficult, but you needed to firmly shove it away for now, you could revisit it later.

You had shit to do, and it needed to happen now.
