Chapter Text
A firescales… would never be allowed in the Ice Kingdom… and with a Seawing, too! Sickening, it’s… and the Nightwings! Nightwings and Icewings, learning together... living together... disgusting, betrayal, intolerable…
Tundra and her thoughts were a blizzard of fury and contempt, fast approaching Winter’s sleeping cave, impossible to miss for a mind-reading Nightwing like Moon – and she did not care.
For one thing, Moon was… preoccupied – in other words, Winter was currently doing his best to cram his tongue down her throat.
One of Moon’s talons was planted firmly on his chest, pinning him against his sleeping ledge, and the other was behind his head to pull him up into the kiss – yes, Moon had started it, but Winter was always more aggressive about this kind of thing, and it didn’t take long for him to start dominating her tongue with his own.
Not that Moon was complaining. Winter was never the most delicate kisser, but he made up for it with his passion, once she got him going – and, besides, it was Winter. In Moon’s eyes, that was all that really mattered.
Going to take him home, back to the Ice Kingdom… put a stop to this fraternizing... weakness... doesn’t understand what it means to be an Icewing, he’s…
Tundra’s thoughts were clearer now – she must have been just outside, on the verge of storming in and discovering everything – and, as far as Moon was concerned?
Let her.
“Your mother’s about to walk in on us,” Moon murmured, separating from Winter just enough to tell him.
“W-what?” Winter flushed a deep blue in an instant, pushing on Moon’s chest in a half-hearted bid to get her off. “T-Tundra? Why is she– Moon! We need to–”
“Need to what?” Moon purred. “Need to hide our relationship from her? I think she needs to see this, don’t you?”
Moon could hear talonsteps echoing into the sleeping cave now – and, totally unbothered, she let her claws play idly through the spikes behind Winter’s head while he stared up at her, all cute and dumbfounded.
“What has gotten into you?” Winter started to protest. “We can’t–”
Of course, protests meant open mouths, and, right as Tundra rounded the corner – Moon leaned in and kissed him again.
The shrill screech of horror that ensued was a sound neither of them would ever forget.
“WINTER!!”
Winter tried to squirm away, but Moon held him tightly in place, with her snout pressed against his.
“What is the meaning of this?” Tundra shrieked, loud enough to wake half of Jade Mountain, no doubt. “W-with a NIGHTWING? I-I knew you were never a proper Icewing, Winter, but– But the depravity! The-the–”
“Can I help you, miss?” Moon asked, swiveling her head around to greet Tundra with a perfect ‘Polite-Nightwing’ smile, pressing her wingtip to Winter’s newly released lips to keep him quiet.
“YOU!” Tundra jabbed an accusatory wingtip in Moon’s direction. “How dare you? I-I-I– Queen Snowfall will hear of this!”
And then, with a flurry of pale blue scales, Tundra whirled about and fled the cave.
With a Nightwing! WITH A NIGHTWING! Failure! Disappointment! He isn’t my son… don’t care… never again… never trying again… never coming back…
Moon took the time to listen to the older Icewing’s thoughts receding down the hall – and then she giggled. “Well, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about her anymore.”
“I wish you hadn’t done that,” Winter grumbled.
“She was going to find out eventually,” said Moon, still eyeing the cave entrance were Tundra had just disappeared. “Winter, I don’t think she was ever going to accept any of this, was she?”
“No, but…”
“But what?”
“Well, I know she always thought of me as a failed Icewing,” said Winter, “but I always hoped that… That eventually, I might find some way to make up for it, to change her mind, but…”
Winter sighed, and Moon turned back to face him. “You’re right,” he said. “It was a foolish thing to hope, wasn’t it? That my own mother might love me, some day?”
“Oh, Winter...” Moon cooed, shifting her talon to stroke one of his horns with her thumb. “You’re not a failed Icewing,” she said. “Not to me. I love you, and I love you just the way you are. And,” she added, lowering her snout level with his, “I can prove it, too...”
Winter’s mouth opened to say something – to agree, to protest – it didn’t matter. Moon leaned in to close the gap between them, wrapped her mouth around his, and pulled Winter into a new kiss.
And, somehow – between how he started to push himself up into her, and what he was doing with his tongue?
Moon was quite sure Winter was entirely content with how everything had turned out for him.
