As a mother of three sons, I understand the chaos that comes with raising boys. It isn’t always easy and it doesn’t always go to plan, but at the end of the day? It is 100% worth it. If done right. And that’s what I’ve always tried to do with and by my boys; right. Impart to them morals and values that benefit them and the people around them, teach them proper conduct and manners.
Which is why the recent revelations about Ilya Rozanov’s past have been so concerning to me.
My boys love hockey, but how can I, in good conscience, let them watch and play a sport that promotes “role models” like Rozanov? “Role models” who are dangerous, who brawl, who drink and smoke (and maybe more), who go clubbing in seedy establishments? Who have done all of that even before coming of age?
Who abuse their status and wealth to coerce impressionable young women into pregnancies they’re not allowed to keep and nourish?
I want my sons to find themselves and do what brings them joy, but how can I support their interests if I constantly have to fear for their innocence and the purity of their souls?

My husband and I are child-free by choice. Yes, we love our nieces and nephews. I was the one to approach Ilya and Shane about the option of surrogacy when they started planning their family. They did offer to compensate me, handsomely so, but money was not my motivator. They did cover all medical costs. I established strict rules and we all, including Shane’s cousin Holly, consulted with our lawyers before moving forward. (2/4)

I was the one who set the limit to three pregnancies. I was the one who decided on twelve month breaks between each pregnancy. The timing working out like it did was pure luck. Not wanting children does not automatically mean a person is afraid of, averse to, or disgusted by pregnancy. Both my husband and I declined the role of godparent to avoid future confusion. The children receive age-appropriate answers about their conception and family structure whenever they ask. (3/4)
