He knew Lucy. He knew her expressions. He knew her little ticks and tricks.. She tended to consistently be an open book, but right now? In instances like this, she completely shut down. He’d seen it in a handful of scenarios. Some instances from work ( after Aaron and Celina got attacked ), and other instances were due to her personal life ( like running into her mother while out to get dinner.) She could work her way out of those, could find the way out of the maze she’d put herself into.
Knowing she wasn’t going to let him in immediately, he did what he knew best, walked through it with her. He held her close during times like this, when she felt like her heart was failing. He held onto her when she fought a battle that existed loudly in her head. This time around it felt different, this wasn’t sadness from her. This was fear.
