The confirmation lands like a blow.
It steals the air from Ichigo’s lungs. His breath hitches sharply, heart pounding fiercely.
And the sound that tears out of him is something he doesn’t recognise. It’s raw, high, broken—his whole body collapsing into Dad as he sobs, hard and uncontrollable. He screams until his throat burns, cries until his chest aches, until he can’t tell where one breath ends and the next begins.
Dad rocks him slowly, one hand buried in Ichigo’s hair, fingers combing through it again and again, over and over. He murmurs soft, broken things into the crown of his head—nonsense words, apologies, reassurances—anything to fill the space where his mom should have been.
And all Ichigo can do is clutch at Dad, fists fisting in his shirt so tight like he might disappear too if he lets go.
