Work Text:
Carmie is tired. She stares at her reflection with bloodshot eyes, her skin glowing luminously in the mirror. She's fed up of existing as what she is, fed up with that stupid prophecy hanging over her head. She opens the door, checking to see if anyone’s in the hallway. It’s empty, so she proceeds to the bathroom.
Carmie turns on the sink and runs her hands under the water. The blood on her hands is rinsed away, except for underneath her nails and in the smallest crevices of her skin. Her sixteenth birthday is drawing near, and she can almost feel her Mythic side becoming more prominent. That and being trapped in the woods by Tristan for a while, made her do some… unsavoury things.
After scrubbing her hands well, Carmie goes back to her room, and grabs her phone. There’s one person who might get it, and she’s in another state. She opens up her contacts and texts Madison.
hey u up?
It takes a minute for Madison to respond.
yeah, what’s up
Carmie winces slightly, trying to formulate a response that’s both truthful and sane sounding. She sacrifices the sanity in favour of actually communicating with her.
i killed a mouse
what why
its a long story
The phone’s light is practically blinding in the darkness of her room. Carmie turns down the brightness, then sees three periods bobbing as Madison types a reply.
i don’t have anything better to do
k so basically i got stuck in the woods because tristan was being his usual self
and i was there for like a week with no food
i know where this is going
how
nevermind that, you got hungry, and went all vampire, right?
A feeling settles in Carmie’s chest, something between disgust and fear.
don’t say it like that
why?
it makes me sound like a monster or smth
carmie, we’re blendeds, we kinda are monsters
Carmie squeezes her phone so tight it cracks.
no
well, we’re only half, but there’s nothing wrong with that half
Carmie immediately closes her phone and puts it on her nightstand. She curls up on her bed like she did when she initially crawled into her house through the window after finding her way back to civilization. She thinks back to when she was thirteen and didn’t fully understand the full implication of being blended. The powers were, are, nice, but at heart Carmie has really only liked to see herself as a human with some vampire traits. She knows now that’s wrong. She’s human enough to be a little disconnected from mythics, but vampire enough to be predator-ish and off. It’s a painful in-between.
Carmie takes a solid, deep breath, then takes another one, and finally works up the courage to get back to Madison, who’d been blowing up her phone after Carmie stopped texting her.
srry i stopped responding
its ok, why?
you were just getting to some feelings that i didn’t want to talk about
i was chickening out
anyways
i dont think i like being blended
look carmie, i love you, and thats why im gonna say you have to deal with it, atleast until youre 16
i cant just deal with it
im too much of a human to be cool with the full package of vampireness
and i cant just be a human bc im still a vampling
being one or the other isnt something to think about until the day comes, you know what you are right now?
a cool, funny, really interesting girl, who just happens to be a vampling
youll always be that, and your both parts of your heritage
Carmie texts back a quick thank you, then turns off her phone to get some sleep. On second thought though, she opts to hover to the ceiling, tilted at a 45 degree angle. Maybe it doesn’t really matter wether she’s a human that’s like a vampire, a vampire that’s like a human, or some combination of both. She’s Carmie regardless.
