Hayden hasn’t been mic’d up before - or at least it has been a very long time. He’s not that popular, compared to some of his teammates. Except the last few weeks he has been doing more interviews because people love it when you have a baby and apparently they’ve decided he’s funny. Which has been confirmed by his teammates a few times. So now here he is, the social media team running some wire through his shirt and telling him a bunch of things.
He hasn’t slept enough the past few weeks, so he’s not really registering much of the information - something about how much it can pick up from other players and that it is a live feed during the game. All he can think about is how his wife is alone with four kids for the first time since Amber was born and how his mother - who was supposed to go and help out - cancelled last minute because of the flu. He offered to stay home, but she declined. Saying she had to do it at some point, and an evening game should be okay. Arthur and the twins would be in bed mostly, and Amber is still young enough to be left in her crib with a monitor.
By the time he makes it to the ice he’s already forgotten about being mic’d up, Shane bumping his shoulder in greeting.
“How’s Amber?” he asks. They haven't had a lot of time to catch up with everything that's been happening.
“Cute and not sleeping enough through the night” he replies, Shane laughs, “Jackie is on solo duty today.”
“Good luck to her! Getting the twins to bed is not easy” Shane laughs, and Hayden agrees easily, “Couldn’t have done it alone”
“Jackie is a superstar” Hayden agrees, “You guys still good to babysit next week?”
“Yeah, he’s been looking forward to it. You know he loves your kids” Shane says with a soft smile, he notices Hayden’s expression, “You okay?”
“Yeah” he nods, “I just feel like I’m forgetting something. Like there’s something I need to tell you. I swear these kids are messing with my short term memory”
“I’m sure you’ll remember” Shane says, “Looks like we’re up”
They play a good game, Shane manages to score off an assist by Hayden. Rozanov throws them a few chirps, nothing too scandalous. There’s one about how his baby is probably a better hockey player than him, which makes Hayden laugh - he really needs more sleep, and one about how he is avoiding the puck like he avoids mushrooms. It’s a bit of a throwback and for some reason still kinda hits a nerve. When they return to the bench a woman walks up to adjust the mic and Shane stares at him.
“You’re mic’d up” he says, “Is that the thing you were forgetting?”
“Oh shit” he nods as the woman reattaches the mic and leaves, “I mean - I don’t think you said anything - you didn’t”
Shane nods, it’s become second nature not to use names when there’s others too close. Maybe he revealed a few things - but nothing they can lead back to him being with Rozanov - he’s pretty sure about that.
The only real issue now is - how does he let Ilya Rozanov know?
