“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t feed you to the rats and then inter your bones without ceremony,” Armand demands, his eyes blazing.
“Because, deep down,” Sam says, meeting Armand’s gaze with last-ditch defiance, “you know I’m the reason our audiences keep coming back.”
At first, Armand looks furious. He opens his mouth a fraction, his eyes flickering, raising one hand in a graceful arc. There’s already a flame in his palm, and Sam’s instinctive response is to meet Armand’s gesture with the same, to show him that he’s not the only one who wields the Fire Gift. Armand glances at the flame in Sam’s hand and then at Sam’s face, tilting his head. He closes his hand, extinguishing the fire.
Sam closes his own hand, shaking from head to foot. “We’ve both broken curfew.”
Armand bites his lip, giving a slow, reluctant nod. “Yes, it would seem we have.”

“I won’t be totally useless to you, then?” Sam asks. He takes the bottle, sniffs it, and hands it back. “Thanks, but I won't benefit from that unless…”
“Ah,” Rashid says, catching his mistake. He sets the bottle down, and then offers his arm. “This is something you’ll have to cover anyway, right?”
Sam stares at Rashid’s wrist, his eyes owlishly inhuman again. “I’m,” he tries, licking his lips, both fangs exposed. “I’m sorry, but what are you…”
“I’m not stupid,” Rashid says. “If Armand’s companion is as much of a hothead as Raglan implies he is, then here’s a chance I’ll get bitten on the job. That’s likely what will have happened when a vacancy finally crops up, yeah? The turnover isn't too high, but when there is turnover…” He shrugs, lifting his wrist a fraction closer to Sam’s parted lips. “You can’t convince me you don’t have vampire agents bite human agents on the regular so they know what to expect. Tell me that, as my trainer, you wouldn’t be the one to do it. Tell me I’m wrong.”
Sam sucks in a shuddering breath, his hungry eyes fixed on Rashid’s. “Oh, darlin’. You’re not.”

Summary
The proximity is irritating, to say the least. The bleating, the squirming, all the while the beast inside him roars with hunger. He would have much rather enjoyed the ballet with its orderly seats, then taken home an inebriated, no-fuss bite to eat from the bar and watched the fireworks from the comfort of his own apartment suite.
And yet, he chose this over the intricately choreographed tragedy in one act. For Daniel.New Year's Eve of 1975: Armand leaves Daniel's side amidst the celebrations to hunt.
