“Rough night?”
The voice comes from too close.
Dick stiffens. He hadn’t expected to hear that voice tonight, certainly not here. Calm, steady, threaded with something he can’t quite place. Recognition washes over him slowly, like a hand on the back of his neck, grounding.
“Yeah," Dick murmurs, lowering his hands from where he had put them over his eyes. The bar swims back into focus; lights blotchy as the last of the phosphines begin to fade. “Something like that.”
There’s a pause. The kind that suggests he’s being observed.
“You look like you need something stronger than a beer tonight, pretty boy.” The nickname lands softly, a faint edge underneath it. Concern, perhaps. “Want your usual?”
Dick swallows, mouth dry. His thoughts slip back to Roman, sharp words, loud words - he doesn’t trust himself to unpack any of it out loud.
