No, killing homophobes does not make you the gay version of Kira (because Kira was already gay) by purplesan

Summary
‘You shouldn’t have stopped me.’ Mello snarled as they walked – or more like stomped, in Mello’s case – away from the bar they’d been kicked out of mere minutes before.
For totally unjustified reasons, Matt had to admit, because it shockingly hadn’t been them causing trouble for a change.
(Okay, they hadn’t been the ones who’d started it, but that still counted. It wasn’t their fault that some people took offence to seeing two guys kiss, now was it?)
‘I mean, I would have been fine with you throwing a few punches, but you were about to pull your gun on him, Mells.’
‘So?’
‘Need I remind you we’re supposed to be keeping a low profile?’ Matt pointed out. ‘We should be enjoying ourselves, not blow off the head of every homophobe we come across.’
It was tempting, sure, but that wouldn’t make them much better than Kira, just with a different target audience.
‘Maybe blowing the heads off of homophobes brings me joy.’
‘I’m serious, Mello.’
‘So am I.’
---
Or: Mello practises self-control by not shooting a homophobe in the head, and Matt rewards (annoys) him with humour afterwards.
