Summary
In the smog-choked, rain-slicked ruins of Los Angeles, J-SNW (Jon) is a Nexus-9 Replicant and a Blade Runner for the LAPD. He is designed to be utterly loyal, suppressing a baseline melancholy with implanted memories of a cold, austere agricultural outpost in the north. His job is to hunt down older, rogue Nexus-8 models who refuse to comply with Wallace Corporation's obsolescence orders.His newest target is a high-priority anomaly: D-TARG (Daenerys), a Nexus-8 who has not only gone rogue but has begun rallying other replicants. She is dismantling the bio-metric trackers of fugitive replicants, effectively freeing them from their built-in chains. When Jon tracks her to an irradiated, abandoned sector of the city, he intends to retire her.
Instead, she forces him to question the nature of his own synthetic soul, leading to a profound, quiet shattering of their realities. Over the course of the story, the hunter becomes the protector, and the two forge a dangerous alliance against the LAPD and Wallace Corp.
