Summary
In light of recent events and the influx of people interested in hockey here, I thought it might be helpful to have a primer not just on hockey, but on the misogynistic, homophobic, racist, classist, ableist, etc. parts of hockey culture. For authors looking to write about a sad, sad time instead of a happy fun time.
I chose not to use Archive warnings because I'm not sure how to warn for this content. Suffice to say, it mentions rape, other violence, drug use, alcohol abuse, underage drinking, and underage sex. I will be linking to external stories where possible to make this work slightly more readable, but even the vaguest mentions of some of these things are stomach-turning. And some items I will reference aren't very accessible, so I'll be including those. Reader beware.
