Work Text:
Nobody in the pitt has ever seen Robby get so possesive, it's like Robby has a new sense for: someone's around my omega, must protect. Trinity tries to scratch Dennis behind his ear after he tells her that she's been doing well, but Robby comes out of nowhere and pulls his Dennis back, wrapping his arms just above his omega's tummy. "safe?" Robby asks Dennis, looking over his mate, checking for even the slightest sign of something wrong. something off, he finds nothing past Dennis looking amused and leaning his full weight on his alpha.
"Get a room." Trinity snorts, in reality it was actually quite cute to see how Dennis just melted into any and all interaction with Robby, it also wasn't a suprise to hear the two were expecting, the honey scent that clung to Dennis like a blanket made it quite obvious, along with Robby who quite literally snarled at any patient who was mean to Dennis or treated his omega like less. Getting a verbal confirmation from her best friend was still nice either way though. "I'm safe Love, baby's safe too, you can go to work, Trinity won't hurt me." Dennis says, leaning into Robby. Dennis didn't want Robby to go back to work, he wanted him to stay, wanted to be wrapped in his alpha's arms until time itself ended. But alas, work called, and lord knows Gloria already got on their asses about unproffesional behaviour at work more than enough, funnily, she seemed to be the only one that had an issue with it.
Robby hesitantly let go after kissing Dennis on the top of his head, settled a bit by the reassurance his omega and baby were okay. "Do you need a break?" He offers Dennis, he always did, Dennis just had to say and he'd get to go home for the day. Dennis shakes his head. Leaving felt horrible, he could work, his alpha was closeby at least. And that mattered more than anything to Dennis. Dennis's insticts cry out inside of him when Robby turns around and walks off. He wants to follow, wants to run into his mate's arms and feel safe again. Was the hospital always so bright? So noisy... Dennis's ears pull back and his tail tucks between his legs.
"You okay there Huckleberry?" Trinity asks, seeing Dennis suddenly shrink into himself and whimper quietly. "Do you need a quiet space? Are you nauseous? Talk to me huckleberry." She says, recognisisng something's going wrong currently, she reaches out to put a hand on his shoulder but Dennis pulls back. Dennis whimpers, everything's loud, alpha leaving, he doesn't feel too good... Dennis collapses to his knees. It's all way too much. He needs his alpha, now.
Robby starts panicking while he's checking on a patient, distress signals rushing through their bond. Something was wrong with Dennis. Fuck. "Oh, and she has-" Princess is teling him something, he doesn't manage to listen. He's rushing out of the room to where he left Dennis with a pace that made you think someone would die if he didn't get there within ten seconds. He finds his omega on the floor crying softly with Trinity and Dana next to him but not touching him and reassuring him that his alpha would be right there in just a second. He kneels down, sitting on the floor without a care for it being dirty and pulls Dennis into his lap, shooting Trinity and Dana both, quick and grateful looks. the both of them nod at him.
"Alpha?" Dennis mutters weakly and Robby's heart couldve shattered right then and there. Dennis looks up at him, ears perking up a bit, his eyes tear filled and red, and Robby can see his omega's tail tucked between his boy's legs. "I'm here omega, right here. I've got you." He says, petting through his omega's hair with one of his hands, the other wrapped around Dennis and resting on his stomach. "Dennis snuggles himself into his alpha's arms until he's got his nose buried in his alpha's scent gland. Breathing in the scent makes him feel a bit better, and it has Robby putting out more pheromones to soothe Dennis. Curse what's workplace appropriate, Dennis is distressed.
They're gathering a crowd, almost all of the day shift gathered some distance away. The alpha's stand even further back, knowing damn well that if an alpha outside of the little emotionally connected pack got even three steps closer Robby would beat them to hell and back. Dennis's new med students look unsurely, Joy's cat ears flick and she looks concerned, her instincts reacting automatically to a fellow omega in distress. Oglivie however doesn't seem to feel anything. The alpha tilts his head on why all the alpha's are so far back. Probably scared he decides for himself and before anyone can stop him he pushes past the crowd to where Trinity and Dana are. "Why are they being dramatic?" He asks Trinity like she'll give him the answer.
He just gets to hear a collective gasp after he pushed past and see Dr. Santos's horrified look she gives him before he hears a rumbling growl. He turns to the sound to find Dr. Robby settling Dennis on the floor, who whimpers in loss, and then he's being lunged at. Oglivie's instincts take over and he lunges right back at Robby. His scent turning foul to hopefully fend off the suddenly attacking alpha.
It doesn't deter Robby at all. Infact he can sniff out his target now, meaning even in his rage it's easier to avoid hurting others He tackles Oglivie, sending him to the floor as the other alpha hits his head against the floor. Robby doesn't stop. He balls up a hand and brings it down hard against Oglivie's ribs, smiling at the pained noise it earns him from Oglivie. His ears are perked up and he growls. He can vaguely hear Dana shouting at him to stop but he doesn't. Oglivie's a threat. A threat he'll get ridd of. Punching Oglivie in the face earns him a pained shout and then he hears the one thing that manages to make him stop.
"No - you're hurting him!" A soft panicked sound, Dennis. Robby is pulling back and looking at his omega in seconds. Dennis looks afraid, Dana and Trinity look shaken but understanding, most of the others seem scared of him too. all backed up far as they could. He looks down at Oglivie to find the alpha bloody. he has a nosebleed and Robby has for sure broken his nose. He pulls back and off of the alpha as if burned. Fuck. He did that... He didn't mean to cause serious harm. He just wanted to make sure that his omega was safe and protected.
Someone steps up and drags Oglivie off to get treated. The tension seems to leave with Oglivie. The omegas and alphas step closer again. "That fucking kid... Who does he think he is." Jesse starts and suddenly there's a sea of voices talking through eachother. Robby isn't focused on them though. He turns to Dennis and sits next to him. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt him that bad... I just, needed you to be safe, and him insulting your emotions and coming way too close... I lost it." Robby apologises.
Dennis isn't mad. Not really at least, sure, Robby had lashed out, he had hurt Oglivie. But he knew he'd told his med students at the start of the day that he was expecting and to be careful about how they behaved when Robby was around him because the alpha's instincts were at an all time high. Oglivie knew he shouldn't have, but he did it either way. "It's okay, he had it coming." Dennis mutters, the fight enough of a distraction that his instincts had settled. "I just hope he thinks twice next time he wants to do something like that..." He adds on and Robby nods. "Damn right." He replies, if Oglivie tried something again then Robby would begin thinking he had a death wish.
"Oh, and don't think I've forgotten about what just happened love, I need you to always tell me the truth okay? Even if you think you're being irrational by asking me to stay, or that it isn't fair for you to need another break, or to extend your break. You know we can always arrange for your leave to start much earlier than mine does." Robby says, pulling Dennis up onto his feet and hugging him. Dennis clings to him. "No!" He squeaks out quickly. "I mean, I would prefer to keep working." Dennis corrects himself, but it's too late. Robby has already picked up on the panic in his first answer. "Talk to me love." Robby says, something's off, Dennis has been hiding something.
"It's just-" Dennis pauses and looks away. "When I consider staying home, it feels like the worst possible thing on the planet because if I just stay at work then I can stay with you." He explains and Robby's eyes soften. "Oh love, don't stay here just for my sake. If working is getting too much we'll get you on leave." Robby says, petting through Dennis's hair. "But then I can't see you-" Dennis protests and Robby puts a hand over his mouth to shut him up. "I didn't say you would be the only one on leave. After what I just did to Oglivie I give it ten minutes before Gloria is kicking both of us out of here and will happily sign off on leave to avoid a lawsuit." He says and Dana nods.
"Five years ago we had one of our senior residents get with an omega and have a kid with said omega, he went on leave around the three month mark, you're around two months now right?" Dana asks and Dennis nods. "Mhm, they'll really just let us go?" Dennis asks, a little unsure. "Kid, there's rules about this stuff. You can take any leave you need as long as you want, and Robby? Alpha's who get agressive and violent with another alpha over this kinda stuff get put into forced leave." She explains and Dennis tilts his head. "Forced leave?" Dana laughs at his cluelessness. "Yeah kid, Robby is now legally considered dangerous until you actually have the pup. That also means he's not allowed to work, or do much of anything. Infact Gloria will likely show up with a bright red collar with a tag that has dangerous on it." She says and Dennis looks up at Robby who looks shockingly neutral about being labeled like that.
"That feels mean..." Dennis says and Robby chuckles. "It isn't mean love, not really. It's important for safety, mine included. Without that collar and without all the limits on what I'm allowed to do another incident might occur with a bit too cocky of an alpha, or maybe even an alpha that doesn't mean anything but accidentally triggers my instincts. It could go really wrong then. You managed to snap me out this time, but... I'm not stupid enough to think that that'll work next time too." Robby explains, sure, being labeled dangerous isn't exactly fun. But he's treated several 'dangerous' alpha's before and seen himself in them. This wasn't a shock for him.
Gloria shows up. "Michael Robinavitch!" She says and he gets up and faces her immediately, disobeying her now could lead to consequences. "Gloria. I want to start by saying I'm sorry, I hope Oglivie makes a full recovery and that I think it's best if I don't work for the remainder of the pregnancy." He says and she pauses. "Oglivie is on the road to recovery, his injuries aren't fatal just brutal. He's going to be okay. You, however, are now considered dangerous. I agree that neither of you should be working." She says and holds out a neon red collar to Robby with a big dangerous tag. Robby barely blinks as he takes it and puts it on.
"Remind me what I can't do now?" He asks and Gloria hands him a small guide book. "It's in there but I'll repeat the biggest ones. You aren't allowed to go shopping with just the two of you. You either go alone or You have to take someone who's trained in working with Dangerous alpha's along. You aren't allowed to work. You're recommended to not get groceries in person, order in. And along with ordering groceries or any food, you have to warn them beforehand of the fact you're dangerous. Got that?" She asks and Robby nods. "Loud and clear." He says and Gloria nods at him. "I believe that you're a good man Robinavitch, stay in line and prove me right." She smiles. Robby nods at her. "I won't dissapoint." he reassures. "Good, now go home, you too Whitaker. I don't want to see either of you again unless its during visiting hours in oneof the maternity rooms." She says, looking over at Dennis, who nods.
Being at home together isn't bad at all. they keep preparing for the pup and get regular help from Jack, who's also their trained person for when they go baby shopping. Robby's schedule starts centering around Dennis, make sure he's taken care of, that even the bad parts of carrying a pup feel less bad for him. And his schedule starts looking a little bit like this:
6-7 am: wake up and prepare bathroom with pillows and blankets so Dennis doesn't bruise his knees getting sick.
7-8am: work on nursery plans, assemble furniture, check on Dennis to see if he's woken.
8-9am: start working on a light breakfast that's still nutritional and check on Dennis.
9-10am: Dennis woke up, nauseous, take omega to bathroom and comfort him while he gets sick, make sure he drinks water after and try to feed him some breakfast.
10-11am: cuddle with omega, check on baby bump, get possesive. Refuse to leave bed ever again.
11-12pm: more cuddles. Kiss omega, refuse to let him get up for water because no he's not, Robby has 2 fully working legs. Get water for omega.
12-1pm: get interrupted by grocery delivery. Open door with omega on hip. Omega delivery boy who looks too young for the work. Tip heavily cause omega got sad for him having to work so hard for a small paycheck.
1-2pm: feed omega lunch, wonder what kind of pup could possibly make his omega crave shrimp and vanilla icecream. Call Jack to ask him to pick up such for omega.
2-3pm: omega enrichment time. Get craving supplies from Jack. Make craving as Jack watches some show with omega. Dress omega and feed craving. Watch with slight horror as omega finishes craving in minutes. Make omega brush teeth cause breath smells like fish. Get ready for park
3-4pm: go park with omega and Jack, get weird look from child, wave hi. Get waved back at. Take multiple breaks with omega on benches. Go home. Say bye to Jack.
4-5pm: prepare dinner for omega while omega sits on the counter being adorable.
5-6pm: eat dinner, keep an eye on omega to make sure he can keep food down.
6-7pm: relax on couch, massage whatever hurts on omega. Watch him fall asleep. Carry up to nest and tuck in.
7-11pm: work on nursery, check on omega.
11-6am: sleep
Robby keeps up that schedule for the remaining four months, allthough the last month is mostly spent waiting with him getting increasingly more possesive. getting so bad in the last week that Jack has to be there to get the groceries cause even a foreign omega could easily set Robby's instincts haywire.
But now they're here, in a dimly lit hospital room as Dennis sleeps off the exhaustion. Leaving him sitting next to the bed with their tiny little pup cradled in his arms. she's the most gorgeous thing he's ever seen, Dennis's little twirling curls, his deep brown eyes and hair. small puppy tail and ears twitching and tail wagging as she sleeps soundly, wrapped up in a little pink onesie.
Robby has never before in his life seen something quite so beautiful and fragile. Standing up and moving her over to his left arm carefully, opening the door to find Dana, Jack, and Trinity all waiting there. He smiles as they look up. "Dennis is sleeping. It went really well." He says stepping out and smiling down at Lilly. "Ahw, she's adorable." Trinity speaks first. "You better tell Dennis he did good buddy." Jack smiles. "I did, a million times. And it's still nowhere near enough." Robby says. "She's gorgeous." Dana says. "You think one of you two's gonna quit?" She follows that up with and Robby tilts his head. "Maybe, we've been talking. We're just going to enjoy the leave we have and decide after. Dennis might go part time." Robby explains and all three nod. "Sounds reasonable." Jack says.
"you picked a name?" Trinity asks, clearly trying to seem less excited than she is. "Lilly." Robby says and smiles at her. "You can be excited you know, if I wasn't holding her i'd be jumping around." Robby chuckles, watching as Trinity breaks into a wide smile. "She's the cutest little thing I've seen! she already has so much hair for being a few hours old awwww. You better let me teach you how to braid it later." She rants and Robby smiles. Their pack meant more to him than he had ever expected his heart to let him. "Only if you promise to be patient while teaching me." He replies and she nods.
Robby lets them into the room after that and they sit around talking quietly until Dennis wakes again, looking around the room smiling. "There he is, hi love, you sleep well?" Robby asks and Dennis nods, still wobbly on painkillers. "Where Lilly." He whines and Robby smiles. "Sit up some love, I'll hand her over." He says and watches as his omega does. He slowly hands Lilly over who's yet to wake. "She stay asleep?" Dennis asks, immediately checking her breathing. "Yeah love, like a little angel."
eventually their pack heads home and Robby leaves Dennis for a minute to go get some food from the cafeteria for both of them. There's a man and a woman he doesn't recognise in the waiting room. He pauses, shuts the door and glares at them. The red collar still around his neck hopefully a warning to them. "Is he in there?" The woman asks. "Who?" Robby asks. "Our Dennis ofcourse, we've been telling him since before he left that he's meant for this, he'll be the best mom." The woman says and Robby balls up his fist, barely managing not to punch the woman in the face. "You're his parents?" He snarls, ears going forwards. "Yes. You are?" His dad asks and Robby glares at him. "His mate. I know what you did to him." He growls.
Dennis's father tils his head. "Don't get aggresive with me. We have a right to see him!" He shouts and Robby just stands taller. "You do not. Not after the way you shunned him. Not after the way you punished him and shut him out just for who he is!" Robby snarls. "We only ever told him the truth! It's fine that he's trans. God will forgive him. But omega's were only made for this. Only made to settle down and have pups. How many more are you planning to have by the way?" She asks, as if she even has a right.
Robby can't stand these people. "However many Dennis wants. Which is none of your business. You don't get to be a part of this part of his life when you shunned him in every other part because of his biology." He says, standing firm on that. Dennis's mother seems to think for a few seconds. "I suppose the way we treated him was... old fashioned." She admits and Robby huffs. "You think? Woman your omega was months away from dropping and then you would've lost him without knowing what he could do!
He's a doctor now.
Did you know that? He's doing his residency at an emergency department, saving lives every goddamn day. While being an omega. And while getting to have his instincts and his hormomes and everything! So yes, maybe he's now fulfilled your idea of what an omega should be. But he's so much more than a dad. He has a pack. He has a good job. He's got his instincts back. I won't allow you to ruin what little stability and happiness he's finally found. So no. You can't see him. And you can't see lilly. Text. Call. Send a card. Start proving you even deserve it." He snarls.
His words finally seem to hit. "You're right." She sighs, looking up at him. "And I think. Deep down, we've always known what we've done to him isn't okay. We were just... ashamed. Dennis was- well, he was the black sheep. His brothers were stronger. He was trans and not shy to tell people such. And then, when he turned 17, he presented, and we freaked out. It wasn't right. It was never right." She mutters, and Dennis's father nods.
"Glad you can see that at least. Now scram. I don't want you around my omega." He growls. She looks up. "Can you tell him we're here? That he doesn't have to see us. But... that we're going to try from now on. That we want to learn who he is. And who his pup is. When he thinks we deserve to." She mutters, and Robby pauses. "Fine."
He heads back in to see Dennis staring at him with Lilly being a little fussy in his arms. "Your parents are out there." Robby sighs. Dennis looks over at the door with wide eyes. "They are? They haven't spoken a word to me since I left. And this- this is what makes them show up?" He asks with a sad sniffle. "I know, love, I know. I told them they weren't getting in, but they want you to know they've realised how wrong they've been. They're gonna try from now on." Robby says, pressing a soft kiss to his omega's forehead.
"They realised?" Dennis asks, his eyes twinkling in the light. "Yeah. They realised." Robby says. "Can I see them?" Dennis asks. "Only if you want to." Robby says. "I want to. Maybe not with Lilly, though. Only if they react well." Dennis mutters, and Robby nods. Taking Lilly over from Dennis's arms. "I'll get them to come in here." Robby says and places lilly in the carrier they've taken, setting her somewhere safe but out of view. Pushing open the door back to Dennis's parents.
"He wants to see you. Don't expect anything." Robby growls at them. Watching surprised looks fall over both of their faces as they quickly get up and go inside. He shuts the door behind them, then he heads back to Dennis's side. Holding his hand as his parents settle awkwardly at the other edge of the bed. "Dennis..." his mother starts. "We're sorry, we've done you wrong. I have especially. We're gonna be better for you now, kiddo." Dennis's father cuts in, his mother nods. "Yeah. It's long overdue." She agrees.
Dennis isn't sure what to do with this. They... they actually seem genuine? He had expected them to burst in here and ask to see the pup. Instead. Well... instead they seem focused on him. It's an odd kind of feeling. For once they're not asking for his help or half focused on one of his brothers too. But... him. They're looking at him. "I- I can't forgive you yet. But... thank you. For, you know, noticing, and – and apologising." Dennis says and his mother smiles. "Ofcourse Denny. You deserve much more." She says, and Robby smiles. Having stepped back against the wall to watch and see if it'll all be okay. "Family reunion." He says glancing at Dennis, who smiles at him. "Yeah. My brothers..?" He asks his parents. "They wanted to come with but... They have their own families now. Jay has three kids, 2 boys one girl, seemingly all omega so far, only the little girl hasn't presented yet. then again they're very young for presenting still. All early bloomers that family." His mom says.
"Jay's boys are... omega?" Dennis asks and his mom nods. "It's been... a learning process for all of us. Especially me and your father. Facing a lot of our mistakes and Demons from the past. We've been bad to you ever since you presented and masked our faults with a wrong idea of christ. Now we've been trying to do it right this time around. Jay and his wife are happy, we should be happy for them too." She says and Dennis's father nods. "We uh- haven't shown up empty handed for you and the pup either." he says and both Robby and Dennis tilt their heads at the two of them. "You haven't?" Dennis asks and his mom picks up two bags while his father picks up another smaller bag and approaches Robby with it.
"These are for you, we didn't really know what you'd like much, because well we barely knew you past from what you social medias could tell us." Dennis's father says and Robby nods, taking the bag, but his eyes don't leave his omega as Dennis's mother hands him the other two bags. "One for you, one for the pup." She says and Dennis's tail is wagging ever so slightly because they're his parents after all. he can't remember the last time their attention was on him this long without being scolded. The one he looks into first has some tiny purple outfits and a baby sling in that same pastel purple. it also has a few packs of diapers and Dennis smiles. "Jay suggested those, he said you'd appreciate them much more than any other gift he could come up with." She smiles.
his bag has a lot of smaller bags with smaller blankets and some of what used to be his favourite snacks. "The blankets are scented, even Jay's pups insisted on doing one." She says and Dennis could sob. Scented blankets, clear nesting material from his family. Approval, acceptance. Dennis's eyes pool with tears. "Love? You alright love?" Robby asks, immediately by his side and petting through his omega's hair. "M okay, happy." Dennis says sniffling and looks up at Robby, "Promise?" Robby asks and Dennis nods. "Promise." He says, and it reassures Robby enough that he backs off a bit.
"Thanks mom." Dennis says, looking at her through teary eyes. She pets his hair and scratches behind one of his ears. "Don't thank me. Not when I haven't even started coming close to deserving it." She says somberly. "What's in yours?" Dennis asks Robby who looks down at his hands. Oh yeah. He still has a bag. Sitting down next to Dennis's bed he opens the bag. There's a few books and some bags with blankets. Fishing one out of his bag he sees the cover being Dennis when he was about six. The title Just says Dennis 2005-2006. It's a picture book... Of Dennis. From when he didn't know his omega yet. Going through them he sees so many memories of small Dennis. Turning six, first rat caught, meeting the new lamb. It's adorable and theres at least 16 picture books.
Robby is going to obsess over them for weeks. "Mom you didn't..." Dennis says watching his alpha's eyes glaze over with that soft loving look as he goes through the book. "Oh I did. It's my job as your mom to at least be a little embarrasing." She chuckles as Robby pulls one of the sealed blankets out of the bag. "Dennis's baby blanket." dennis's dad says. "I remember how Jay's omega reacted when we gave her his. If it's even anything important to you." He doesn't get to say more before Robby's opened the bag and has the baby blanket pressed against his nose. That's his boy alright, except the vannila scent is muted and instead of bread he smells more like honey. The scent really reminds Robby of getting warm milk with honey so he'd go to bed. It's innocent and soft and now Robby is the one who might cry. "I assume that means it's approved." Dennis's dad says with a chuckle. Robby puts the blanket back with great effort and nods.
"Hey Robby?" Dennis asks and Robby turns to him. "Anything omega." Dennis smiles. "Can you get Lilly? And make an attempt at keeping her asleep." Dennis says and Robby freezes. "You're sure?" Robby asks and watches his omega nod. So he does, walks over to the carrier they hid and gently takes a snoozing Lilly out of it, wrapped in a little blanket. She stays asleep, perfect tiny pup that his omega gave him. Looking over at Dennis once he stands up to find Dennis's whole family looking at him with wagging tails. He sits back down next to Dennis and hands Lilly over. "There we are, hi love." Dennis says watching her tiny ears perk up at the sound. "That's her..?" His mom asks, staring at her lovingly and Dennis nods. His dad seems too in awe to really say much.
"Lilly, why don't we say hi for a second pup." Dennis says, petting her head with one of his fingers. She makes a soft squeaky noise but stays asleep. "Don't think she really wants to." Robby chuckles. "Yeah, have to agree there." Dennis nods.
So their life continues as hers starts up. Robby and Dennis are always there. Learning, helping and loving her. And slowly but surely Dennis's parents and brothers get let back into their lifes. Traveling around to Pitsburgh once a year for her birthday. Abbot still visits a lot and so do Trinity and Garcia. Dennis does quit, he tries part time for a while but any emergency involving kids has him so worried sick he becomes incapable of actually giving proper treatment. So he spends the days at home teaching Lilly everything she asks and waiting for Robby to get back.
It isn't perfect. But damn if it doesn't feel like the most perfect thing ever.
