Chapter 1: Luffy

Chapter Text

Nami is having way too much fun right now, darting around the Sunny as Luffy chases her.

They’re supposed to be sparring. This game of tag counts, right? Nami jumps, body half–lightning, and clears the foremast and sail easily. Luffy swings up, hot on her wedge heels.

The Thousand Sunny is a big ship, a brigantine, much bigger than their beloved caravel Merry was. Said ship is also currently on the move. Nami miscalculates her landing, shooting just past the roof of the crow’s nest, but phases through the rigging as she goes down instead of getting tangled up in ropes.

Luffy lets out a surprised whoa! before he stretches out to grab the other mast, and swings away again.

Nami lands, light as a feather, on the lawn. Zoro is also there, sitting at the base of the foremast. He insists on watching their sparring sessions.

She crouches down. “Let me know when he’s coming, will you?” she asks, feeling for a tiny metal plate hidden in the grass.

Zoro glances up. “He’s here.”

“Of course he is.” Nami finds what she’s looking for, and with it, she slips into the copper wiring that connects everything aboard the ship for her.

No fair, Nami! she hears Luffy say as she speeds off. If she could laugh in her current form, then she would.

They’re still supposed to be sparring. This game of whack–a–mole counts, right? Nami reappears at the helm, waves at Luffy, and ducks back into the wiring when he charges at her. She repeats that over and over again, popping up by her tangerine trees, by Sunny’s lion figurehead, at the ladder entrance to the crow’s nest, and back to where Zoro is.

Nami gets predictable at some point. She reappears at the crow’s nest entrance, and Luffy is already there to tackle her. He goes in for the kill.

“I’ve got you now, Nami!” he says, snickering.

A few weeks ago, Nami would’ve accepted her fate. Both she and Luffy would’ve headed for the unforgiving sea. Today, however, only one person is doing that.

Nami splits herself where he’s holding her. Once free, both halves of her body crackle, then dissipate. She floats in the air, mostly as heat energy, and all she can do as Luffy falls is watch it happen.

It’s a good thing that they have a lifeguard on duty. There he is, already diving over the starboard side to rescue his captain. Nami settles back on the Sunny, human again, and goes to grab a few towels for them.
