Work Text:
Ryan sighs as he sits atop his horse, fingers running gently through her mane.
He got word, from Shane, that Luca was taken to the hospital after a bad hit during a game.
In New York.
Two hours ago.
He's off today.
Ryan knows he could go to New York, but what would he say?
That he's been awake after a 48-hour shift since Shane called him on Luca's phone?
That he made Shane give his number to Wyatt for updates?
That all he could think was how he hasn't told Luca that he wants to try this long-distance thing?
His phone buzzes.
Wyatt: Luca is mostly clear, but they are worried about his ribs. There's too much swelling to see the damage, but he's certain it's broken.
Ryan: He would know. Have they given him any pain medication?
Wyatt: Yes, but it doesn't seem to be working. Troy is about to talk to the doctor with a friend we made at the hockey game who married a nurse.
Ryan: Tell Troy to call me too, I need to be in on that conversation.
Wyatt: Well, Luca actually wanted to call you. So, which would you rather do right now?
Ryan: Call me on your phone, on speaker, he doesn't need me pressed to his ear.
Ryan's already looking for a flight.
He doesn't care.
His phone is overtaken by Luca's bright smile, and he answers, "Why are you calling me from your phone?"
But Luca's tired face is on his screen, so Ryan cares a bit less.
"Dimmed the phone all the way down, so I can't see your pouty lips," Luca's grumbling, and Ryan can see his pout. "You should be sleeping, Ry."
"You were supposed to be texting me the plays from the game. But you're in a hospital bed, and I'm looking for flights," huffs Ryan as he shares his screen.
"You're coming here? Just because I got hurt? Ryan, what— Why?" Luca sounds breathless, and Ryan focuses to make sure he's okay.
Then he sees the blush.
"Because Luca Haas, I fucking like you. Distance be damned," replies Ryan as he stares at those blue eyes.
"You have to let me take you on a date now," Luca says it so seriously that Ryan chuckles. "It might be in my hotel room, but I'm not losing you to the distance without a date now."
"I'd love to have a take-out night in your hotel room. So long as you realize, I'll be your roommate," replies Ryan with a half-smirk as he buys the ticket.
"There's only one bed in my room," says Luca with a grin.
"Guess we'll have to carefully cuddle then," replies Ryan with a shrug.
"Stay on the phone until you have to get off?" asks Luca softly with a hopeful tone.
"Always," replies Ryan as he rides back to the stables.
He has to pack, then catch a flight to see, and take care of, his boyfriend.
