   Summary

   Ethan is a folklore scholar. He knows the stories — the ones about things in the woods, the ones about people who walk into forests and don't walk out. He's studied the patterns. Named them. Published on them.

   None of that helps when the trail disappears.

   Something lives in this forest. It closed the paths behind his hiking group and scattered them into the dark. It leaves food at his shelter. It retied his knots while he slept. It built him a stream that fits his shoulders.

   It is watching him. It has been watching him for days. And the longer he stays, the less he wants to leave.
