Chapter Text

The Last Prophecy?
Seekers of a new alternative, listen,
to the last great prophecy given by the Nightwings,
before our gift expires and one can only walk into darkness,
the one who read the future has chosen a path that shouldn't exist,
but change beckons change.
So now beware the other one who remains from the ancient mixed lineage,
and look out for the changes in one's own being,
there's a web of truths and lies and if it's never untangled,
the strings will never be cut.
Prologue
This is a terrible idea.
Blizzard glanced down at the two items in front of him, the scroll, and a decently large ice shard that he twisted for a moment on his talons, looking thoughtfully at it.
Should I actually do it? I know the circumstances, I know what happened, all I'll get from doing this will only be sadness, but…
He leaned his head closer to the shard, opening his mouth as he slowly said the next few words.
"Find my mother, Flurry of the Icewings."
Right afterward, the shard began to give off a soft, blue glow. As he pointed to one direction, the glow intensified, and then faded when he pointed the other way.
"... I might as well, I should see it sooner than later," he sighed, approaching one of the shelves to grab one of the bracelet, looking as the many splashes of black on his body were overtaken by white, his spines growing larger, and his tail actually had spikes now.
This was the first time he's ever needed to put on a bracelet, since never before did he step out of the secret caves.
Slowly, hesitantly, he took one step and then another as he went through the hidden maze within the Ice Cliff for a while until finally, he saw the first rays of sunlight. Covering his eyes for a moment he stepped out through the snow-covered opening, taking a deep breath as he looked around, feeling the full extent of the kingdom's cold, with soft snow beneath his talons.
Making sure nobody was around the Cliff, he brought back out the shard, moving it around until the glow was intense, then he flared open his wings and took flight, going above his home and into the Ice Kingdom, stopping every few minutes to check the shard and change direction as needed.
How will she be? What might she think? I can't tell her any of the truth but… Maybe I could get to know her, anything.
He stared onward, his talons twitching as they held the ice shard. I hope she's okay, that she managed to start again, that her mind managed to heal…
The glow intensified, telling him that he was getting very close, so he descended, softly landing on the snow and walking the rest of the way, taking a deep breath as he moved for about 5 minutes until finally reaching his destination.
There was a frozen lake ahead of him, the rink extending for a large distance, and sitting down by its side, just watching over… It was her.
He quickly put the shard back into a pouch as he stepped closer, his eyes seeing his mother for the first time. Her body covered in shiny gray scales, wings a mix of white and grey. She appeared to be relaxing, her talons tapping on the snow.
Blizzard felt nervous, even scared, almost like a child. After 15 years he'll finally get to see her, talk to her, while also knowing this was not his mother. The Flurry who married Boreas and laid his egg was gone along with all of her memories.
She didn't seem to notice his approach, so he cleared his throat, but she still didn't hear him, so he did it a bit louder, finally making her quickly turn her head around and look at him with icy-blue eyes, and he immediately got a read of her emotions, a bit of surprise momentarily taking over bliss and curiosity.
"Oh! Hello, sorry I didn't notice you before. Do you need something?" She asked, tilting her head and blinking a few times.
"Hm, well… I just noticed you sitting here and I felt curious," he replied after a moment, trying to keep his composure.
"Ooh, yeah, I just like this place, I don't know why, but I just feel something when I'm here, like nostalgia? I don't really know, but I feel it was in some way important to who I was" she replied with a smile, turning her head to look again to the frozen lake.
"What do you mean?" Blizzard asked, surprised by this. Did she have any idea of what happened?
"I'm… Not sure what happened, but years ago, something weird and creepy happened. Apparently when I was 12 I just woke up in my bed and acted like a hatchling, I had to grow up again. And whatever happened to me before that age? I don't remember any of it, weird, right?" She asked in a casual tone, humming to herself afterward.
"That's… Really surprising, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you," Blizzard replied after a few moments, looking away. He didn't think this part would come up so quickly.
"It's no big deal, if I can't remember it, then it never happened, right? Literally nothing to worry about," Flurry replied with a shrug.
"But you still come here due to something you feel?"
"It's a nice feeling, so I don't mind, it's not like I'm not curious at all about what happened either, I just don't worry about it."
"I… See," Blizzard muttered, sighing as he took one step closer. "Oh, I never presented myself, I apologize. My name is Blizzard."
"..."
Flurry looked at him for a few moments, her head tilted and her eyes looking at him with interest. He mentally startled, did she recognize him? He knew that his mother was the one to pick his name, did it mean anything to her? Her emotions fluctuated, surprise, hope and pain.
"... Blizzard, that's a good name, hah, it's funny, my name is Flurry, and here comes that feeling again. Maybe I met a Blizzard when I was young? if so, whoever they are, sorry for forgetting you," she said, casually talking to the air when saying the latter.
I wish you had met me, that I could've had the chance of seeing you, knowing you, loving you as my mother.
Blizzard wanted to do something, to reveal everything, to scream about how she was remembering him, her own son, he wanted to have his mother back in his life, to find any spell that could somehow counter permanently erased memories.
But he couldn't bring himself to do it. His father had already hurt her in such an extreme way by taking away her whole life until that point, it wasn't fair to drag her back into the whole situation, 16 years later.
And it wouldn't be fair for her to know Boreas was long gone, and that her son was a murderer, a murderer who's enacting revenge across worlds and taking it out on a teen.
She deserved better.
Flurry looked at him, her expression worried. "Blizzard? Are you okay? You look sad."
"Oh… I just feel bad about what happened to you… I'm sorry," he said, wanting to convey as much as possible in that apology. That her previous life got completely erased, that she'd never get to know her husband and her son, that her broken mind clearly changed her personality into something he knew most Icewings would look down upon.
"I didn't mean to make you feel bad, I know it sounds strange, but I'm fine, I've got my mother and she makes sure everything is okay, thank you for your sympathy," she said with a smile,
Seeing her smile like that, telling him things are okay… He wished he had that earlier in his life. Once more, he cursed his father for ruining his whole life.
"I'm glad, truly. I hope things remain okay for you, you deserve it. To live a good, fulfilling life despite all that you might have lost."
She looked surprised by his vehement words, but it only made her smile more, her eyes looking at him with absentminded gratitude.
"You're a very nice dragon, thanks for this chat, I don't get to talk to many dragons," she said with a nod.
"Me neither, I don't really leave my home, but… I wanted to ask, do you frequent this place often? I wouldn't mind getting to talk to a friendly face."
"Every day."
He shuddered upon hearing this. She might say that she's okay, but it was obvious, the constant hope and curiosity he was able to read from her emotions were just more than that, it had to be longing, a desire to connect with what she had lost.
"Very well, I don't have much else to do so… I'll visit tomorrow."
"That sounds great, company is fun," she said, and her emotions changed to a subtle sadness, and he looked at her with pity. Just how alone was she? Was it only her and her mother?
He decided that even if he couldn't start a connection that never got to exist, at the very least, he could be a friend for his mother, even if he will never be her son. He could take breaks from the scroll, Oracle didn't need him every day, every hour.
"Farewell then, see you soon," he said, his tone soft as he quickly turned around and walked away. He did not want to spend another minute there, he needed to go back home and unwind. He didn't want to cry like a lost child in front of Flurry.
"Goodbye!" Flurry said, happily as she waved.
Oh, mother…
