The Actually Haunted House

Summary:

PR248: Don’t make eye contact. Do NOT make eye contact.

Work Text:

It was supposed to be a casual haunted house group outing.

Halloween shenanigans with college friends, nothing crazy.

Go to the haunted house at the amusement park, eat an insane amount of overpriced sugar, and ride some rides.

It wasn’t supposed to end up like this.

Jazz carefully looks around the corner to see the wraith drift along the wall on the opposite side.

“What is that?” Kelli asks, holding her bleeding arm.

“Nothing good,” Jazz says, ducking back behind the wall when the wraith turns.

She pulls her roommate back away from the corner to gather with Kate, Laura, and their other two dormmates, Sarah and Michelle.

“So there’s a wraith in the next room,” Jazz says as quietly as she can over the horror music, tearing the hem of her shirt.

“I thought ghosts weren’t real,” Sarah says, eyes locked on Kelli’s arm.

“No they’re very real,” Laura says. “You missed Jazz summoning her dead brother into the living room last month.”

“He’s not fully dead, yet,” Jazz says, pulling Kelli’s arm free of her hand to tie the makeshift bandage on the wound. “Also not the point, listen, that thing isn’t like normal ghosts.”

“And what is a normal ghost supposed to be like?” Michelle asks.

“Do they also want to eat us?” Kelli asks.

“Well wraiths don’t eat people, they just hate the living. Very vengeful creatures.” Jazz ties it off and checks Kelli’s pulse in her wrist. “Do you feel tingling in your fingers?”

“No, I think?”

“Okay so here’s what we’re going to do,” Jazz turns to the rest of the girls, “I’m going to call for back up and will deal with this, and you all are going to head back the way we came and get out. Whatever you do, don’t make eye contact.” she pauses to enunciate. “Do Not make eye contact.”

“You want us to go on our own?” Sarah squeaks.

“It’s safer than staying here with me.”

“And how exactly is that safe?” Katie asks.

“I can handle a wraith, you can’t.”

“That doesn’t answer anything,” Sarah throws her hands into the air. “What exactly are you going to do, Miss Psychology major? Talk it into leaving us alone?”

“No,” Jazz reaches into her purse and pulls out a gun, “I’m going to shoot it.”

The girls stare at her.

“That’s a gun,” Laura says. “Why do you have a gun? What the fuck is a gun going to do to a ghost?!”

Jazz flicks the safety and the gun lights up green. “This doesn’t use bullets.”

“You’re insane,” Michelle says.

“If you think so,” Jazz says. “You should get moving while I distract it.”

“Maybe we should listen to her,” Kelli says. “I mean she did summon her brother with candles and a take out bag. If she says the gun will work, I feel like we should believe her.”

“I’m down with not sticking around here,” Kate agrees, “But I don’t feel great about leaving Jazz on her own.”

“I cannot believe I’m saying this, but I also do not want to leave you on your own either.” Laura says.

“And I’m telling you, you don’t need to worry about that, as I’m calling in backup,” Jazz says, flicking the safety back on and letting the green glow die.

“What backup?”

She pulls a scroll out of her purse and tears it.

A swirling green light tears open a hole in reality. Through the portal Fright Knight walks through.

“Your Highness, for what have you summoned me?” he asks, making a small bow as the portal closes itself.

“There’s a wraith in the next room I need assistance dealing with,” Jazz jerks a thumb in the direction.

“Understood, I will assist you in this endeavor,” he draws his sword.

“You know what, I’m officially out,” Laura says. “Have fun, your highness.”
