   Summary

   Dazai imagined all the people who would have something to say about him now, if they could see him. Pathetic. Attention-seeking. Manipulative. Troublesome. Difficult.

   What a fascinating little catalogue of complaints. People always did like language when it could be used as a blade and not a bridge. Dress cruelty up in clean words and everybody got to feel civilized while they did it. That was the trick, really. Not simply doing harm, but doing it while continuing to believe you were good.

   Dazai was better than them in one respect, at least. He never needed to lie to himself about what he was doing. When he wanted to hurt something, he knew exactly where he was aiming.
