“JETT!” The doors to the quarters seemed to slam together.
“Yes, my love?” Jett called from the living room.
“You are coaching calica?”
Jett grinned, stood, and walked to her partner. “Well, co-coaching. I heard there’s another coach.”
Lura crossed her arms. “Yes. ME.”
Jett raised her eyebrows in mock surprise. “Oh. You? I wasn’t under the impression you were interested in calica.”
As Jett’s eyebrows rose, Lura’s seemed to frown closer together. “JETT! You know that coaching the calica team is an honor, one that I have hoped to hold since accepting my position here.”
Jett simply raised an eyebrow even more. Lura stomped her foot as she turned and walked towards the bedroom. Jett grinned, in spite of herself. If Lura wasn’t such a hunk of a woman, Jett would find her mannerisms almost teenage-like. Maybe their charges had been rubbing off on them. Jett headed to the replicator and ordered a pot of tea for Lura and herself, granted her dear partner re-emerged from the bedroom.
The whoosh of the doors made her look up. Lura came out, wearing the uniform undershirt, matching Jett’s relaxed wear. “Tea?” Jett held out a cup and saucer.
Lura sat with a ‘humph.’ She took a sip. “So. You really are coaching calica.”
Jett nodded. “They said they needed another coach.”
“But you did know that I was the coach.”
Jett nodded again.
“So you willingly volunteered to coach a sport.” Jett nodded a third time. “With me.” Jett nodded again. “I did not take you for the athletic type.”
At that, Jett shrugged. “Well, I’m more of the unexpected, stringbean-sort of secret weapon.”
Lura sat back and stared at Jett, eyes intensely fixed. Jett kept her smile at bay as she watched the gears turn in Lura’s head. Finally, her eyes softened and she exhaled indignantly.
“Jett. You should know. That calica can make me rather… intense.”
“Really? Usually you’re so chill,” Jett answered.
“I care for you deeply, and I do not want this to cause any… rifts in our relationship.” Lura continued.
“Maybe you’re right. After all, the only reason I like you is because of your relaxed demeanor, all of the time. I should tell Ake that someone else should volunteer to spend more time with you.” Jett sipped her tea to punctuate.
Lura narrowed her eyes. “Are you… ribbing on me?”
“Got it in one, my dear.” Jett finally let her smile show on her face.
Lura huffed again and set her tea down. “You are… Well. I suppose we could make a good coaching team.”
“Well, geez. Glad you think so.” Jett refilled her and Lura’s cups.
“I believe when we hold try-outs, we should recruit nine elite players and two relief players. We use automated drones to-”
“Oh, so we are getting right into it,” Jett remarked.
“I did warn you.” Lura chastised. “Intense.”
“I know, dear. And you are sort of right - I’m not the biggest calica fan.”
“I- Wha- How do you expect-” Lura slammed her cup down again.
Jett scooched on the couch and rubbed Lura’s shoulders. “Honey, one of my new favorite things to do is make you happy. What better way to do that, then stand by your side while you watch teenagers play-battle each other? Plus… well, do you really want to know why I volunteered?”
Lura took a deep breath as Jett’s hands moved over her shoulders and back. “Why?”
“Who else would actually indulge all your crazy ideas? This way, I can keep you in check, but also let you have your fun. And, as a bonus, I’ll even help you program the drones.”
Lura leaned into her partner’s shoulder, close to her ear. “That’s the most romantic thing someone’s said to me.”
