Work Text:
Pyro was often left alone to their own devices, despite being completely clueless as to what they were supposed to do with their new lifestyle. Scott didn't seem interested in teaching them anything, and Pyro wasn't going to attempt to ask Owen anything.
Without another vampire around willing to show them the ropes, Pyro was stuck learning with trial and error. They didn't know much about vampires or the folklore surrounding them, but they did know that they were going to be able to turn into a bat, if Scott's offhand comment meant anything.
The idea of being able to fly, soaring up high into the cloudy sky, sounded like freedom.
The problem was that they had no idea how to do any of that. Knowing they could, and knowing how they were supposed to, were completely different things.
It was what led Pyro to the tower on the lake's small island. It made sense to them that with all their new instincts, turning into a bat might happen naturally if they needed it to.
Looking down at the ground from the top of the tower, however, Pyro begins to have second thoughts. It could work, but if it didn't, Pyro would be in a world of pain. They don't think they can die by normal means like falling, but that didn't mean that it wouldn't leave them hurt and weak if they hit the ground from this height.
They swallow hard, staring at the drop. As long as they didn't die, being hurt wasn't that bad. Not if they could learn to fly.
Pyro shivers, taking a step forward towards the the half wall serving as a barrier between the top of the tower and open air.
It was a long fall.
It would, hopefully, be worth it.
With that thought, Pyro takes one last look at the ground before stepping over the barrier, letting go of the wall. They start to fall, the air whipping against their face, but before any sense of panic can fester, their chest lurches and then they aren't falling anymore.
It takes a moment for Pyro to realize what happened, but when they open their eyes, they're in the sky. Small, paperthin wings flap quickly, keeping them airborne.
A laugh bubbles in Pyro's chest, it though escapes in little chirps and squeaks.
It's clumsy at first, as they try to move, but eventually they figure it out. Rowing their tiny body forward, they soar through the air, gliding with the wind.
It's the best Pyro's felt since coming to Oakhurst.
They never want to stop.
