Summary:

Vampires SMP Bat Conservation Event Day 2: Fledgling!

Work Text:

Scott had fledglings before. Before he was cursed, he had many. None of them were the same as Pyro.

His past fledglings had respected him, but most of them had been his friends before being turned by him. It was different from the intense, almost obsessive, way Pyro looked up at him. It was flattering to see the younger vampire stumble over themself in their desperate attempts to earn Scott's approval.

The poor thing was terrified of Scott, but still followed behind him as close they could, like a clingy puppy. Pyro, despite their faults, was endearing enough that Scott had decided on more than one occasion to spare them the harsh punishment their mistakes deserved.

It helped that allowing himself to be softer with Pyro every now and again made the fledgling attach themself even closer to Scott's side. They were loyal, but it was a fragile sort of loyalty that Scott knew came from Pyro's desperation to belong.

It was a balancing act. Being gentle and merciful with Pyro at the right times, while making sure that they knew their place.

Scott had seen cases like Pyro's before. Neglected and abused their whole life, desperate to make something worthwhile out of themself. Those things paired with the power vampirism gave could easily make someone like Pyro gain a complex.

It did help that Pyro landed on the pathetic end of the scale rather than the vengeful side. It made it much easier to mold them into what Scott wanted when they didn't hold themself in high regard.

Scott would have taken a different approach with Pyro if they had an ego.

Fortunately for him, Pyro begged for any sense of validation, and that made Scott's job easy.

So, when a tiny brown bat lands and settles on his shoulder, over-sized ears pinned back pathetically, black eyes shiny and pitiful, Scott allows Pyro to curl up against him.

Pyro's bat form was small, despite the species they belonged to ranging in size. It made it easy for them to tuck into the space between Scott's neck and coat collar. Pyro chirps quietly once they situate themself comfortably, and Scott gently pets their head with his finger.

Pyro was lucky Scott was so generous with them.
