Summary
Jacob has been drawn into his friend Arin's cycle of addiction for years. When Arin shows up at his doorstep in the middle of the night, Jacob resolves to put an end to it. He has a family now.
But Arin has changed into something much more dangerous.
“Do you remember the Ripper? When we were kids? They never caught him. He’s still out there. He’s still—killing.”
“That was like 30 years ago.”
“He was just born, then. He didn’t know how to hide his tracks. To be careful. He’s careful now. But he made a mistake. I got away.”
Jacob snaps to attention. “Arin, are you hurt? Did someone hurt you?”
“No one can hurt me now. But he tried.”
He doesn’t see Arin move but the next second he’s gripping Jacob’s wrist, breath cold on his face. Jacob wrenches his arm but can’t free it. There’s zero give, the fingers grinding his bones together.
He's panicking now, too late heeding the warning his brain was trying to give him. This is not an animal he can tame. This isn’t something he’s calmed and domesticated. This is feral.
