‘Practicing’

Summary:

“You ever kissed anyone?”

Yoshiki didn’t answer for a moment.

“No.”

Hikaru giggled in the dark. For a moment, they were both quiet.

“…Really?”

Yoshiki sighed, rolling onto his back. “…Really. You have?”

He watched Hikaru sit up. He sat up, too. “A few times…”

Hikaru stood up. Yoshiki just watched.

“Hikaru?”

Work Text:

The curtains swayed gently in the breeze, pulled closed against the cold night outside, and pressed into the window by Yoshiki’s back.

They were together on the boy’s bed, illuminated only by the reading lamp on his bedside table.

Yoshiki was leaning back against the window, playing on his phone, and Hikaru was splayed lengthwise across his bed, right over his legs, reading Master x Master.

Hikaru often did that. Leant or sat or lay on him like it didn’t mean anything. It was sort of uncomfortable, but Yoshiki didn’t mind one bit.

He wondered if it was uncomfortable for Hikaru too, but then, he probably wouldn’t do it if it was, right?

Speaking of Hikaru, he was looking right at him.

“Hey Yoshiki, I bet everyone is asleep now except us…”

His heart did a little flip in his chest. Yoshiki just hummed, forcing his eyes back down to his phone. “…Only if all yer talking didn’t keep them awake.”

Hikaru huffed, sitting up and shuffling off of Yoshiki until he was sat up too, facing him with that teasing grin.

“I’m bored… now we can do the real sleepover stuff!”

Yoshiki sighed, putting his phone down on top of the discarded copy of Master x Master.

“Like what?”

Hikaru considered. “Do yer parents have any alcohol?”

Yoshiki made a face. “We can’t take it, they’d notice.”

Hikaru had that grin he got sometimes, like he knew Yoshiki’s resistance would break before his if he just kept pushing. “We can top it up with water.”

-

Yoshiki swore Hikaru was going to give him a heart attack one day.

They had stolen some of his parents sake, and topped it up with water… with water?? This was crazy, they were totally going to kill him when they found out…

But Hikaru had seemed so excited.

-

They ended up crouched in Yoshiki’s garden, sharing the pilfered alcohol.

Hikaru took a sip first… and his face immediately wrinkled with disgust.

“Eugh… gross, dude.”

Yoshiki huffed. “…It can’t be that bad.”

Hikaru handed him the bottle.

Yoshiki took a sip… and his face wrinkled up too.

Hikaru laughed at him. “I told ya!”

Yoshiki huffed, whispering. “Be quiet! Loudmouth…”

Even though the sake was decidedly gross, they kept drinking it, passing it between themselves.

Yoshiki was starting to feel sleepy.

Indirect kiss...

He hoped that Hikaru would think he was only flushed from the alcohol.

Hikaru was getting chatty, complaining about school, and telling Yoshiki all sorts of gossip he’d heard that he didn’t find believable at all.

But… it was nice, listening to Hikaru talk.

He didn’t realise the other boy had asked him a question, until he looked over and he was staring right at him.

“Yoshiki?”

“Hm?”

“Well?”

Yoshiki stared.

Hikaru shoved his shoulder, grinning. “You totally weren’t listening! Are ya drunk already?”

Yoshiki laughed. Everything felt a little funnier, a little lighter than normal. “It was prolly somethin’ stupid anyway…”

Hikaru scoffed dramatically. “I asked you a question!”

Yoshiki rested his arm on his knee, and his head on his hand. He could feel himself smiling at the offended look on Hikaru’s face. “What was it then?”

“Who do ya like?”

Yoshiki stopped smiling. He looked away from Hikaru, his hand covering his mouth. “I don’t like anyone.”

Hikaru leant against his side. “Dude, ya gotta like someone! Come on, stop bein’ boring…”

Yoshiki stayed staunchly looking away. It felt like someone had poured a bucket of cold water on his head, and the tiredness felt more heavy than relaxing.

Hikaru pinched Yoshiki’s cheek, grinning. “Someone’s too shyyy….”

Yoshiki shoved Hikaru’s head down and ruffled his hair.

“Hey!” Hikaru huffed, running his hand through his messed up hair. “…No fair.”

Yoshiki rolled his eyes. He crossed his arms and leant over his knees. “…Why don’t ya tell me who you like, then?”

Hikaru just smiled slyly, hand still on his head. “You know Saitou, from class B?”

-

It was a while before they trudged back up to Yoshiki’s room, Yoshiki whispering at him to stop being so loud already every couple steps.

After a long conversation about whether Saitou was single, followed by a somehow much longer conversation-turned-argument about if she really looked like Lin Xiang from Master x Master, Yoshiki was feeling very ready to go to bed…

Yoshiki rolled out the spare bed for himself while Hikaru kept mumbling, splayed out on Yoshiki’s bed like a starfish.

-

Soon they were both lying there in the dark.

Yoshiki couldn’t sleep, so he was just listening to Hikaru’s breaths, wondering if he was awake too.

“…Hey.”

Yoshiki looked up. In the dark, he could just about make out Hikaru’s eyes, open and looking at him.

“…I’m tryna sleep.”

“You ever kissed anyone?”

Yoshiki didn’t answer for a moment.

“No.”

Hikaru giggled in the dark. For a moment, they were both quiet.

“…Really?”

Yoshiki sighed, rolling onto his back. “…Really. You have?”

He watched Hikaru sit up. He sat up, too. “A few times…”

Hikaru stood up. Yoshiki just watched.

“Hikaru?”

Hikaru walked over to him, and then sat right on his lap.

Every muscle in his body froze. Yoshiki was suddenly very glad that it was dark. “…Are you still drunk?”

Hikaru leant forward, and kissed him.

Yoshiki stayed still like a statue, his eyes open.

Hikaru laughed at him. “…Close yer eyes.”

Yoshiki closed his eyes.

And they kissed again.

Hikaru’s lips were chapped… and they were moving against his.

Yoshiki kissed back, just a little, hoping that Hikaru wouldn’t suddenly change his mind and call him disgusting for reciprocating.

Am I dreaming? Did I really fall asleep?

As soon as it started, it was over.
Hikaru got off him, and rolled over. Next to Yoshiki.

“Now you’ll know what to do when you do get a girlfriend…” He mumbled.

Yoshiki lay down too, facing away from Hikaru. His heart was thumping. He could feel his face burning. Hikaru’s lips on his.

“R-right…”

His first kiss.

With Hikaru...

-

The next morning, they didn’t talk about it.

Everything was normal

They got ready for school together, they biked there together, Hikaru made stupid jokes and Yoshiki pretended to be annoyed by them.

Like nothing had happened.

It was a few weeks later the next time it happened.

They were in Yoshiki’s room again. Yoshiki was leaning back against his bed, reading a book about dragonflies.

Hikaru was lying on the bed, typing away at his phone, with his head tipped over the edge near Yoshiki’s shoulder.

Yoshiki turned to see what he was doing, and Hikaru dropped his phone on his stomach to hide his screen.

Yoshiki went back to his book. He could practically feel Hikaru’s grin. “What are you doing?”

Hikaru rolled over so his head was right next to Yoshiki’s. “Textin’…”

Yoshiki sighed. He went back to his book, not exactly invested in whatever game Hikaru was trying to play.

Hikaru leaned over his shoulder. “What are ya readin’…”

After a while of squinting at the page, Hikaru sighed. “Boring! I’m bored.”

Yoshiki raised his eyebrows. “Go home, then.”

Hikaru hummed. Suddenly, he went quiet, like he was thinking. Scary.

“Hey Yoshiki?”

“What now?”

“Wanna practice again?”

“…Practice what?”

-

That’s how Yoshiki ended up here again, somehow.

He was sat on the floor, hikaru was kneeling, and they were… kissing.

“Yoshiki, I told ya to close yer eyes…”

So, he did.

Yoshiki really hoped Hikaru’s eyes were closed, too. His face had gotten hot again, and he had no idea what expression he was meant to be making.

That was when he felt Hikaru’s- tongue? Against his teeth?

Yoshiki pulled back, awkward.

Hikaru just blinked at him. “…Just let me do it.”

Yoshiki didn’t have a backbone when it came to Hikaru.

He closed his eyes again.

Hikaru’s tongue tasted like metal… and it felt weird, trying to get used to it.

He tried to copy whatever Hikaru was doing. He wondered if the sensation was sort of like two octopus tentacles, wrapping around each other.

When it was over, Yoshiki knew he was blushing. God, did Hikaru know how much he liked it? Could he tell?

Hikaru got up and flung himself back down on Yoshiki’s bed, like nothing had happened. He picked up his phone again, giggling at something as he started typing again.

I’m not gonna ask him… but I do wonder who it is.

The last time it happened, they were at Hikaru’s house.

They were trying to see who could eat a slice of watermelon the fastest.

Hikaru was the uncontested winner every time, and Yoshiki’s stomach hurt from eating too quick.

He lay back on the ground. “Ugh…”

Hikaru was snickering. His face was covered in watermelon juice.

“Gross…” Yoshiki grumbled.

“Yer just mad ‘cause I’m the winner!” The other boy insisted.

Still, they both ended up in the bathroom, washing their faces.

“What should we do next?” Hikaru asked, rubbing at his wet face with a towel.

“We could go to mion mall?”

Hikaru considered. “…Do ya wanna play hide and seek?”

Yoshiki chuckled. “How old are you again?”

-

That’s how Yoshiki ended up searching Hikaru’s house, feeling a little silly but ultimately happy they could still do dumb stuff like this together.

As soon as Yoshiki entered Hikaru’s room, he knew exactly where he was.

Yoshiki opened the closet door. “Boo!”

Hikaru slammed himself against the wall. “Yoshiki!”

Yoshiki started laughing. “…Didn’t you hear me coming?”

Hikaru’s phone was clutched in his hand.

Yoshiki wondered if he’d been texting someone again. A girl?

Hikaru grabbed his hand, and pulled him into the closet. “What are ya-“

“Close the door.”

Yoshiki sighed, they were sitting across from each other in the dark. “Yer a real weirdo, you know that?”

Hikaru leant forward, and kissed him. Again.

Yoshiki sort of knew the drill by now. He closed his eyes and didn’t question it.

For a while, it was like normal. Yoshiki’s face burning up, hoping Hikaru didn’t notice, tasting watermelon on his lips…

Hikaru pulled away, but he didn’t move away.

Then he kissed Yoshiki’s neck.

Yoshiki felt like his whole body must be turning red at the flood of warmth that rushed him.

Hikaru kissed his neck again, higher, near his jaw.

Yoshiki was…

He could feel himself-

Was he getting-??

Disgusting.

For the first time, Yoshiki was the one who pulled away.

“I n-need the bathroom-“

Hikaru watched, confused, as Yoshiki stumbled out of closet and out of the room.

-

Fuck.

Did he notice?

Yoshiki ended up sitting in the bathroom for a long time, his stomach churning.

What was wrong with him? It wasn’t like Hikaru actually liked him, right? This was just… something they did.

Yoshiki went along with it because he was gross and using his friend, and Hikaru did it because he thought he was practicing with his friend.

…Right?

-

When he finally went back to Hikaru’s room, feeling horribly ashamed and ready to apologise, Hikaru was sat on the bed, typing.

I’m not jealous.

Hikaru just smiled, like nothing was wrong with him. “Your turn!”

Everything kept going like normal. They hadn’t… ‘practiced’ in a while, but Hikaru didn’t exactly seem to have any qualms about their usual touch.

He would still rest his head on Yoshiki, sit on him, lie across him like a pillow, and otherwise get up in his space with the purpose of annoying him.

Until one day, after school.

-

They were both rolling their bikes along, side by side, like usual.

“Hey Yoshiki…” Hikaru started. “Are ya thinkin’ of datin’ anyone?”

Yoshiki never liked to talk about this.

He sighed. “I dunno… probably not.”

Hikaru seemed… nervous? He was acting sort of weird, avoiding his gaze.

“I gotta tell you something.”

Yoshiki could feel his heart pounding.

“…Yeah?”

“I’ll tell you when we get to your house, ok?”

Yoshiki’s hands felt sweaty against his handlebars.

-

They always seemed to end up hanging out on Yoshiki’s bed.

Yoshiki was leaning against the wall with his legs stretched out across the length of his bed, and Hikaru was sat across the width, mostly on top of his legs.

He was texting again.

Who? Who was it?

Hikaru hadn’t mentioned anything about what he said earlier… Yoshiki was getting antsy.

What is he gonna tell me?

Surely not that… maybe he likes…

Maybe, somehow, against all reason, he wants to date-

“Yoshiki.”

Yoshiki held his breath. “Yeah?” He could feel his heart picking up again.

Hikaru put his phone down. He stared at the back of it for a while.

“…I got a girlfriend.”

His heart was still pounding.

He wished it would stop.

“Yoshiki? Are ya zonin’ out again?”

Yoshiki looked at him.

“Uh… right, sorry. Uh, who is it?”

“Saitou.”

Oh.

Of course that’s what he wanted to tell him.

“That’s good.”

“We’ve been dating for 3 months.”

Oh.

Maybe Yoshiki felt a little bit spiteful.

Spiteful enough to mention the unmentionable.

“Did she know about…” He took a deep breath.

“Know about what?”

“You know… what we were doing?”

Hikaru laughed.

He actually laughed.

“Yoshiki! That doesn’t count, obviously. It’s not like we’re actually gay. That would be gross!

Yoshiki laughed too. It hurt, forcing it out. He was such an idiot. A complete, and utter, idiot.

“…You’re right.”
