Little Spoon’s Pillow

Summary:

After a exhausting day as Hokage, all Naruto wants is to come home to his husband. What he didn’t expect was to find Sasuke hugging a huge pregnancy pillow on the couch… or how much that image would melt his heart.

(A short, soft and tender story about their daily life during the pregnancy.)

Work Text:

Naruto Uzumaki had been having a shitty day.

Since early morning, a civilian had stormed into the Hokage’s office complaining about the noise from the training fields near her house.

She demanded that Naruto regulate the schedules so they wouldn’t interfere with her afternoon naps. He had to take a deep breath, count to ten, and force a diplomatic smile while Shikamaru handled calming her down with his usual lazy drawl.

The moment she left, Naruto slumped back into his chair, rubbing his temples.

And that had only been the beginning.

The morning continued with endless meetings. The Kage from a distant village wouldn’t stop throwing flirtatious glances and double-meaning comments at him, leaning over the table a little too much. Naruto smiled on the outside, but inside he kept thinking about how Sasuke wouldn’t hesitate to slit the idiot’s throat if he found out.

They had never announced it publicly, but everyone in Konoha knew that the Hokage and the last Uchiha had been together for a while now. And that their relationship had resulted in a baby currently growing inside Sasuke.

Sakura had strictly forbidden Sasuke from going on any missions or doing intense training because of his subplacental hematoma. Naruto had tried to sneak out of work several times, leaving shadow clones to keep him company, but Sasuke had ruthlessly dismissed them. The stubborn man refused to “settle for a cheap imitation of his husband.” Every time Naruto tried to leave, the dull ache from his clones dissipating hit him like a punch to the gut.

When he finally made it home, it was already late. The sun had set and the village lights glowed softly in the distance.

Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw when he opened the door.

Sasuke was sprawled on the large couch in the entrance, fast asleep. He was wearing one of Naruto’s old black shirts, the fabric stretched over his rounded belly. His hips were slightly elevated, one leg bent upward in a position that looked uncomfortable but apparently worked for him. He was hugging a huge dark blue pillow tightly — one of those special pregnancy pillows Naruto had seen in the maternity stores. The same one he had once offered Sasuke and received a sharp glare in return.

The television was on low volume, playing a documentary about dinosaurs and residual chakra traces in fossils. Naruto smiled tenderly, turned it off, and approached quietly.

He knelt beside the couch. With gentle fingers, he tucked a strand of black hair behind Sasuke’s ear and pressed a lingering kiss to his forehead.

Sasuke woke up instantly, as always. But he didn’t tense. His dark eyes opened, and the moment they recognized Naruto’s chakra, they softened.

“Want me to carry you to bed or do you prefer sleeping here?” Naruto murmured, brushing his thumb over Sasuke’s cheek.

Sasuke blinked sleepily, his voice rough.

“I want to stay here.”

Naruto smiled and leaned closer.

“Can I replace your pillow, or do you want me to go sleep alone like an idiot?”

He said it lovingly, half-joking, but he wasn’t expecting the reaction. Sasuke’s cheeks flushed a deep red, almost childlike. Then, without warning, a strong and precise kick landed right in Naruto’s stomach. He was thrown backward, hitting the wall with a dull thud.

“Ugh… Sas!” he gasped, caught between laughter and complaint.

Sasuke was already getting up, hair messy and expression mortified. He walked to the bedroom without a word, barefoot, still carrying that natural grace the pregnancy hadn’t taken from him. The giant pillow had mysteriously disappeared.

Naruto followed, rubbing his stomach.

“Sas! Since when do you have that pillow?”

Sasuke curled up in fetal position on the bed, facing away, but the blush remained, coloring even the tips of his ears.

“Shut up.”

Naruto chuckled softly and slipped into bed behind him. He stroked his hair gently and leaned in to whisper against his ear.

“Come on… does it help with the pregnancy?”

Sasuke huffed, but didn’t pull away.

“What do you think?”

“Tell me where it is. Want me to bring it?” Naruto whispered, kissing the back of his neck. “We can sleep together, the three of us.”

There was a pause. Then Sasuke shifted a little closer.

“It makes me feel more comfortable… fewer cramps. Sakura bought it for me.”

Naruto smiled against his hair and kissed his cheek softly.

“Sounds perfect, Sas.”

“Hn.”

The next morning, Naruto woke up wrapped in a warmth that had nothing to do with the sunlight filtering through the curtains. Sasuke was nestled against him in perfect spooning position, back pressed to his chest, rounded belly resting gently over Naruto’s protective arm. The huge blue pillow was still clutched in Sasuke’s arms, but now Naruto was part of that nest too — his hand resting reverently over the curve where their son was growing, feeling an occasional soft flutter that stole his breath away.

For a long moment, he just stayed there, breathing in Sasuke’s scent, letting their chakras intertwine in a silent caress. He would never get tired of this.

When Sasuke finally woke up and got over his morning layer of embarrassment, he told him in a low voice — almost mumbling into the pillow — that Ino was teaching him how to embroider. While she made little red tomatoes and delicate flowers, Sasuke was focused on stitching the Uchiha clan symbol with black and red thread. A small, carefully made patch for his pillow.

Naruto felt his heart swell until it hurt.

Later in the kitchen, he placed a cup of warm tea in front of his husband and watched him with a soft, adoring smile.

“Can I join you guys for embroidery?” he asked quietly, almost pleading.

Sasuke let out a short sigh, but this time he couldn’t hide the tiny, tender curve of his lips.

“I’d like to see you try,” he murmured. For once, it sounded more like a sweet invitation than a challenge.

Naruto tried. He really tried. But after two pathetic attempts where the Uzumaki symbol looked more like a dizzy spiral, he gave up and set the needle aside with a resigned laugh.

Sasuke watched him in silence for a moment. Then he reached out and gave him a gentle tap on the forehead, so soft it was barely a touch. His dark eyes shone with something warm and deep.

“I’ll take care of it,” he whispered.

Naruto didn’t answer with words. He simply leaned forward, carefully wrapped his arms around Sasuke’s waist and rested his forehead against his shoulder, breathing him in as his hand returned to the swollen belly.

He felt another soft kick, as if their son agreed too.

“I love you,” he murmured against the fabric of the shirt, so quietly it was almost swallowed by the silence of the kitchen. “Both of you.”

Sasuke turned his head just enough to brush his lips against Naruto’s temple in a slow, almost shy kiss. And for Naruto, that was more than enough.

Yes. Every shitty day was worth it just for moments like this.

Here, in this house, with Sasuke in his arms and their son growing between them, the whole world could wait.

Notes:

I admit this isn’t my most detailed work, but this one-shot was born simply from the thought that Sasuke would be so embarrassed about having that kind of maternity item. After that, I just couldn’t get these images out of my head:
1. Naruto and Sasuke sleeping in spooning position with the pregnancy pillow as a third wheel.
2. Naruto leaning against Sasuke’s back, chin resting on his shoulder, while Sasuke embroiders his pregnancy pillow with a small smile.
Thank you so much for reading! 💛
