On the island of Fortuna, Vergil seeks to understand the existence of The Order of the Sword. But when his blade, the Yamato, is recognized, a deceitful plan is put into place to keep him on the island.

Vergil sat in a tenderness that was almost fearful to behold, as if a secret flame had entered him silently and bound him willingly to a purifying stake for a gentle execution. No longer did he appear in the severity she believed to be the whole of him. Something sat beneath the ash, warm and perilous.
Her suspicion that no feeling heart resided within him broke suddenly, like thin ice beneath an unsuspecting foot.
And when he spoke, his words loosened from him before pride could summon them back, his eyes turned to her with an attachment so grave it seemed he looked for not merely comfort, but for survival itself. As though the world she inhabited alone prevented his spirit from drifting into some vast and soundless expanse.
