Work Text:
You and Basch don’t go on dates often, with your contrasting schedules, it’s hard to find suitable dates for outings. But today was a special occasion; it’s your five month anniversary and what better way to spend it than a day out?
You were sitting on the couch, Basch taking a seat next to you. You turned your head to face him as he sat down. Once he was settled, he turned his head to look at you, making and maintaining eye contact. You opened your mouth to speak, but quickly shut it. What if he said no? What if he never wanted to do anything for this anniversary? I mean it’s understandable, it's a day off from work, of course he would want to just stay home. Your thoughts started to race. A voice cut through those thoughts. “...llo? Hello?? Earth to ___..” You quickly snapped out of your thoughts. “Sorry..” You mumbled. “I was just wondering if you wanted to uh…go out..for once. I mean, it’s completely understandable if you don’t want to. It is your day off after all..” You had started to ramble, just going on and on for possible excuses that he could use as for why he would not want to go on a date.
“___!!” His voice quickly sliced through the air, an abrupt silence coming shortly after. He hesitated for a moment, and then awkwardly placed his hands on your shoulders. “Make as many fake scenarios as you want, but my decision still stays the same. I would like to go out with you,” He responded, a slight pink flush of embarrassment settling on his cheeks . He's never really said anything like this, so the room fell into an awkward silence. You finally decided to speak up,”Well..where can we go. We can’t really make any last minute reservations at a restaurant..so we could just..take a walk. If that's alright with you.”
“Yes. I’m fine with that.”
There was an awkward silence afterward. There wasn’t really that much to say after this. “Well..? What time will we leave?” The silence was broken by a stern voice. “Oh. Sorry. Uh, we can leave in a few hours if you’d like, or we could leave now.” You responded with uncertainty evident in your voice. He nodded his head to the options, and shortly after, he stood up. He walked to your shared room and shut the door behind him. You still wonder why, after all this time, even after multiple (but very rare) kisses, and other things, he was always so guarded. You’ve gotten used to it by now, but it still hurts sometimes. After a few minutes of overthinking this relationship, he walked back out in a dark green jacket and a plain shirt, and of course his usual pants and boots. It’s like he was dressed to go out. Did he really want to go out right now? I thought he might want to wait a few hours, but I guess not.
“So..you want to go out right now..?”
He quickly nodded his head in response. It even looked like he was eager to with how quickly he responded. You stood up from the couch, and walked to the shared room, your hand lightly brushing against his. After a few minutes, you walked out of the room, ready to go. Basch just stared at you for a moment before standing up and walking to the door. Once you caught up to him, he opened the door and stepped out, and you were following closely behind. You both walked on the sidewalk, looking at the different stores available, and even went in a few. You guys never did buy anything since most of this stuff is really expensive, and you know Basch’s love for saving money.
There was a comfortable silence for a moment before what was a stern voice, now weirdly soft, spoke up, ”I’ll be right back. I want to get you something.” You nodded in response. Once he walked into a store, you looked around to find a bench to sit down on. He would buy something for me? I knew about his love for saving money, but he would spend some of it..for me? You were quickly snapped out of your thoughts when someone came up to you.
“Uh..hello? Do you need something?” You asked politely.
“Well,” the random person started,”I just came here to say how (handsome/beautiful) you are..and I was wondering if I could get your number..” You looked around awkwardly as this person kept rambling. You had noticed there was a strange intent visible in the strangers’ eyes, and you really wished Basch would hurry up. You had noticed the stranger had kept moving closer to you, and you backed away in response. You spoke up in a stern voice,”I’m taken. I have no interest in you.”
“Oh c’mon..they don't have to kn-” The strangers’ sentence was interrupted when a sharp voice yelled at them. You quickly turned your head to the source of the voice, and it was Basch! Finally! You ran over to him, quickly wrapping your arms around him, hugging him. He stood there awkwardly for a moment before slowly patting his hand on your back. He whispered words of reassurance in your ear as you hugged him, all while giving the stranger a death glare. The stranger scoffed and walked away. You lifted your head from his shoulder and quietly spoke, “Can we go home now..I feel the mood’s been ruined.” He nodded his head in response. Both of you walked home, a little on edge about everything that just happened. He suddenly paused in the middle of the sidewalk. It took you a moment to notice, but when you did, you immediately turned around and walked back to him.
“Is anything wrong?” You inquired, a meager tinge of worry evident in your voice. It took a few seconds for him to respond, so, if anything, it worried you even more.
“...Who was that..? You know, the person that came up to you earlier.”
Oh. We’re still on this. “I don’t know that guy, they just came up to me and asked for my number, then things got a little out of hand until you arrived,” you started, “C’mon, it's all in the past now. Let’s get home.” You held out your hand for him to grab.
He nodded his head in response and grabbed your hand, intertwining fingers. This is one of the rare times he displays his affection, amazing. You internally squealed as he walked alongside you.
“Well,” you said, “Since you’re already holding my hand, can I get at least a small peck on the cheek?” You lightly teased.
“I mean..I guess, if you really want it..” Basch responded quietly. He slowly leaned in, giving you a light peck on the cheek before immediately turning away. However, he did not pull away from the hand-holding. If anything, he held your hand just a little tighter. This was for sure going in your journal once you got home, just like all the other moments Basch had shown affection. And once it was full, you decided you’d show it to him.
