Work Text:
It was a typical day for Josh at the hospital. He had papers to sign and look through as Chief Medical Officer and surgeries to do as a neurosurgeon. And, of course, he ate lunch with his boyfriend. They were talking about the possibility of moving in together since they already spent nearly all their time together when they weren’t at work.
Usually at Wolf’s place. It just felt more homey in a way that Josh’s place never had. Though Josh’s place also had less clutter and way, way less ferns.
He was walking over to Wolf’s office with some paperwork he needed him to sign (and so he could maybe steal a kiss while there) when he stopped in the doorway, eyes widening and dropping the papers in his hand.
Wolf was on the ground facedown, unconscious and bleeding.
He rushed over, dropping to his knees next to him and reaching out to feel for a pulse. A rush of relieved air left his lungs when he felt the steady thumping under his fingers, and then he started looking for where the blood was coming from. It looked like it was from a gash on Wolf’s arm, which probably needed stitches. It also felt and looked like he’d been hit over the head with something, likely being the reason he was unconscious in the first place. He wasn’t sure if he had any other injuries just yet.
He was getting ready to either yell out for someone or leaving the room to get help when Wolf’s interns walked in and had the same reaction Josh had where they all just froze as their eyes widened in shock.
“Dr. Nash, go tell security that somebody attacked Dr. Wolf. Dr. Dang, go get some help. Dr. Kinney and Dr. Markus, help me make sure Dr. Wolf has pressure applied to his wound and see if he has any other injuries.”
His orders snapped the interns out of their shock and they rushed to follow them, Dr. Dang and Dr. Nash rushing from the room while Dr. Kinney and Dr. Markus coming over next to him. Dr. Markus briefly went over to another area of Wolf’s office, coming back with gauze that he pressed over the wound on his arm to stem the bleeding. Dr. Kinney helped Josh check for any other injuries while they waited for help to arrive.

Once help had arrived, they got Wolf on a gurney and took him to get stitched and see exactly what injuries he had. Security was looking through the CCTV footage to see who had last been in Wolf’s office before Josh got there. He’d also told Carol about what happened. The interns had been dispersed to take care of Wolf’s patients while he was being treated and was temporarily out of commission. He likely had a concussion and may be out of commission for a few days depending on how severe it was.
Josh had already decided he was taking the rest of the day off to take Wolf home and make sure he actually rested and took it easy for at least the rest of the day.
Eventually, Dr. Thorne came over to where Josh was nervously pacing and got his attention.
“He’s relatively alright, awake and complaining,” he started, going on to tell Josh that Wolf’s gash on his arm had been stitched and that he had a few other cuts on his torso and a minor concussion, but was fine other than that. And that he should be able to go home after a few hours in the ER for observation. Josh nodded and headed over to where Wolf was.
He could hear him complaining before he saw him.
At least he was feeling well enough to do so.
Wolf was bandaged and sitting up on a bed looking disgruntled. His face softened when he saw Josh walk in and come over to him. The nurse Wolf had been arguing with left once Josh got to the bed.
“Giving the nurses trouble already?” Josh asked.
“I don’t need to stay for observation,” Wolf grumbled back, looking as though he’d cross his arms if he weren’t injured. Josh fought a smile at the sight.
“Wolf, you need to stay to make sure there’re no issues with your minor concussion. And then I’ll be taking you home so you can rest.”
“But my-”
“Your patients will be taken care of by your interns. You’ve taught them well and you know they can handle it by themselves for a day or two. It’ll be fine.”
Wolf didn’t look overly happy, but he relented and settled back into the bed.
“Do you remember what happened?” Josh asked, wondering if Wolf knew who’d attacked him and possibly why. Wolf scrunched his brow as he thought about it.
“It was a consult, Albert Ricker, but I’m not sure why he attacked me. That part is a bit blurry right now.”
Josh nodded. He at least had a name and security likely already had video of the guy. He started talking to Wolf about other topics, hoping to distract him enough that the time he was required to stay for observation would pass a bit quicker.

Once Wolf was released, Josh was able to get him to his car outside and drove the two of them to Wolf’s place. Carol was handling a few things for him at the hospital, such as checking with security to see if they’d caught the guy, which he spent time with Wolf (such as making sure he actually rested and stayed home for the rest of the day). Wolf had grumbled a bit on the way home about not needing to rest and that he felt perfectly fine.
Josh was resolutely not listening to said grumbling.
They arrived and Josh helped Wolf get out of the car, despite him swatting at Josh and trying to insist that he didn’t need any help. With a stern look from Josh he dropped it and let him help anyways.
Once inside the house, Wolf and Josh both took off their shoes and jackets and Josh went into the kitchen to start some tea while Wolf sat down on the sofa, grumpily. After the tea was ready he joined Wolf in the living room, handing Wolf his mug while he held his own. His boyfriend seemed to melt into the sofa after drinking some of the warming tea.
“Even if I have to take the rest of the day off, you don’t have to be here. You have a hospital to run,” Wolf eventually said, looking over at Josh sitting next to him.
“I don’t care about the hospital, I care about you and want to be here with and for you,” Josh said, putting his mug of tea down and reaching over to turn Wolf’s face towards him. “I’m here because I want to be and I love you. That means more to me than running some hospital.”
Wolf melted and Josh pressed a gentle kiss to him before he pulled away and rested his head on Josh’s shoulder.
Josh would forever be cursing out Noah Wolf for causing the abandonment and self-esteem issues that his son had because of the multiple times he just disappeared from his life. It was a work in progress with them and Oliver was slowly making progress with Josh’s help.
After a bit, Josh felt Wolf slacken a bit and took his now empty mug of tea from his hands and shifted to let his boyfriend rest more comfortably against him. While he could carry Wolf short distances, he was not about to carry him up the stairs to his bedroom while he was dead asleep. He settled in with the weight of Wolf against his chest, pressing a kiss to the top of his head, and picked up a book he’d placed near the sofa earlier just in case.
There was no place he’d rather be.
