Remember what we learned

Summary:

Aziraphale and Crowley have watched season 3. They have things to say.

Notes:

Season 3 contradicts many lessons and values of seasons 1 and 2, and I will never consider it canon. This fic is a love letter to the philosophy of seasons 1 and 2.

Thank you to the wonderful members of klikandtuna's TCM discord channel for all the discussions. Life-saving to process the pain.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The screen turns black.

Crowley: Well that was bullshit.

Aziraphale: Quite.

C: I can't believe it.

A: They started well with the first two, didn't they?

C: They did! Looks like they forgot everything we learned.

A: Remember Job and Sitis? Heaven thought giving them new children was a gift, but we knew it wasn't.

C: Yeah, and I made all this plan to get them their children back, and you lied to that wanker's face. That was incredible.

A: Yes... I thought I would Fall from it, but it was too important not to.

C: How could they think replacing us was the solution?

A: I do wonder the same. It seems like these people quite love us, though I'm not sure why. Giving them new us seems unnecessarily cruel.

C: Exactly. Job's children were annoying, well except Jemimah. Great kid, her. But it was still wrong to replace them.

A: You're my grumpy demon and they love you this way. Not as much as I love you, though.

C: Ngk. Can we talk about the humans? They replaced them too.

A: Oh, yes. I think I understand where they're coming from, but we've risked so much to save them the first time. You wouldn't decide to start from scratch.

C: No I wouldn't! When something's broken you fix it, not destroy it.

A: It's what Adam did during Armageddon.

C: Yeah. Great kid, too. We did the same. Fixed the world and our relationship.

A: A miracle, really. And it worked.

C: That thing they made me say about free will. They forgot humans always had free will. We've been repeating it forever! It's why I love them so much. They're better than all of Heaven and Hell. Make their own choices. Even the dumbest ones.

A: In the end you were right, Heaven was the problem as much as Hell.

C: Just had to get rid of 'em. Wasn't that hard. Well it was, hard, but no need to make a new universe. And we certainly didn't rely on God for that.

A: I agree with some of the things they made me say, though.

C: Which ones?

A: You make me complete. And you were the only good angel. Even when you weren't one anymore, you were better than all of us.

C: Ngk.

A: God was wrong about our love being silly, though.

C: My angeeel, saying God was wrong!

A: Well, that God.

C: Can't take it back now! You know, these humans who look like us, they're cute but they aren't us.

A: Cute, you say?

C: Ngk. Point is. Point is I wanted you, not another you. Didn't want to forget, even the hard parts.

A: I'm glad you did.

C: I wish they knew.

A: I know, dear. And we have to accept that many won't. But we know the truth, and it's about us, isn't it?

C: Yeah.

A: I love you and I will forever be grateful that we found our way towards each other.

Crowley doesn't answer just yet, but it's okay, because Aziraphale is holding him, they're safe and they have all the time in the world.
