Work Text:
Tim knows Kojo has always been a protective dog, maybe not a very useful guard dog but he was protective of him and Lucy. Lucy especially. Tim would come home after work and find them curled up on the couch.
(He didn’t alone him on the furniture; but then Lucy moved in and it was over).
When Lucy would come home late, Kojo would greet her and ignore Tim like he was an old bone.
Tim didn’t mind.
Not really.
He too was extremely protective of Lucy. He got where Kojo was coming from. It was like an instinct to protect her. She protected him too.
When they were kidnapped by Everett’s people, and separated they both fought like hell to get to the other.
They did.
He did.
She did.
And when they got home, Kojo was there to greet them. He was waiting patiently thanks to Genny.
(She had picked him up after it was discovered they were missing and dropped him off just before the arrived home).
He had been attached to them ever since especially Lucy and it was hard at first leaving him at doggy daycare again.
They planned their wedding, and of course Kojo was in it. He was the ring bearer (with help from Tim’s nephews).
And then they went on their honeymoon and left Kojo behind for two weeks. It was a glorious two weeks with just him and Lucy. They had hours of uninterrupted sexy time.
It was amazing.
It was perfect.
They came back home (with much reluctance) and Kojo attached himself to Lucy again. It was pretty normal, but it hadn’t stopped.
He would follow her around the house and then get in the middle of them. Tim just wanted to cuddle his wife, he didn’t need a dog in the middle.
Kojo even started getting a little testy towards Tim. He wasn’t mean just growled a little if Tim came close to Lucy when Kojo was there.
“You know you could share with me.” Tim grumbles at the dog. Lucy gives him an amused look and scratches behind his ears. “I’m married to her not you.”
“Are you seriously jealous of the dog?” Lucy asks him. Lucy presses a kiss to the top of Kojo’s head and then leans over to kiss Tim.
“You get me way more often than Kojo does.” Lucy says. Tim scoffs at that. He barely got to hug Lucy before Kojo butted his way in.
“Not lately.” Tim says. “Kojo is always there. In bed. On the couch. It’s like he’s marking his territory.”
“Didn’t you do that on our honeymoon?” Lucy asks wiggling her eyebrows at him. She’s teasing him and he loves her for it.
“No.” He says. Lucy gives him a look. He had given her a hickey, a noticeable one and that along with the way he clung on to her was enough for everyone to know. “Okay yes but I’m your husband.”
Lucy’s lips twitch a little. He hadn’t gotten used to saying wife when referring to Lucy or husband when referring to himself.
“My very possessive and protective husband.” Lucy says. “And Kojo is just protective of me. It’s sweet.”
“Hmm.” Tim says. He looks at Kojo who is eyeing Tim. “Off.” He points to the ground, it takes a minute but Kojo finally jumps down and Tim pulls Lucy closer.
“I just like to have you all to myself sometimes.” He says. “Is that so wrong?”
“No.” Lucy says and lays her head down on his chest. “No it’s not.”

Kojo’s protectiveness continues and Tim sulks behind the scenes.
(It’s not really behind the scenes—it’s very obvious.)
Tim just wants to have alone time with his wife. They are technically still newlyweds and it just doesn’t feel right.
Kojo barks when Genny and Joy come over and hug Lucy. He knows both of them, he has spent more than enough time with Genny.
But yet—
He barks.
He barks when Tim pulls her aside to calm her down because this was their first family dinner as a married couple.
“Everything doesn’t have to be perfect Luce.” He says softly. “You did good.”
“I—” Lucy pauses and she looks around. “It’s okay? It looks okay?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.” She says. “You can tell me it’s not perfect later.” Tim rolls his eyes and gives her another kiss.
“I love you. You know that right?” He says. Lucy smiles up at him and it’s the best thing in the world. He doesn’t know how he ever got so lucky to be loved by Lucy. To feel that love every single day.
“I love you too.”

Tim finds Lucy kneeled down with her head in the toilet (with Kojo sitting by her side). Tim frowns a little.
“Lucy?” He says. “What’s going on?” Lucy lifts her head up and looks behind her. She wipes her mouth and then turns around. She slumps against the toilet.
“I think I have food poisoning.” She says. Tim tilts his head at her and then kneels down in front of her. He feels her forehead and other than being a little sweaty she seems fine.
“I’m okay.” He says. “Maybe you are coming down with something.”
“Maybe.” She mutters. “It’s just—” She pauses and looks at Kojo. The dog comes over and licks her face.
“What?”
“Never mind.” Lucy says. “It doesn’t matter. I’ll be fine.” Tim studies her and he doesn’t quite believe her. He kisses her forehead and then reaches over to pet Kojo.
“I’ll make you some tea. Okay?” He says. Lucy nods and Tim stands up. He walks to the doorway and when he looks back, Kojo’s head is on Lucy’s lap.
Weird.
It was like Kojo knows something they don’t . It’s like he knows Lucy doesn’t feel well.
But he’s a dog.
He doesn’t know surely.
Lucy is okay, it probably was just a bug. It wasn’t anything serious.
Kojo was just protective and that’s all it was.

Lucy doesn’t get better. Tim finds her at the toilet again when he gets home from work with Kojo next to her. He growls when Tim gets close, but Tim gives him a stern no and he backs off.
“Lucy, I don’t think this is food poisoning.” Tim says gently rubbing her back.
“It’s not. You, Genny, the boys and your mom are fine.” She says. “It’s something else.”
“I would say,” Tim says. He looks at Kojo and then turns his attention back to Lucy. “What do you think it is.”
Lucy turns around and sits up against the toilet. “I think I might know.” She says. “And why Kojo has been acting so protective.”
“What—why?” Tim asks and he’s a little confused. Lucy stands up and heads to the counter and grabs something off the counter.
“I thought of this in the middle of the day and I just—” She presses something into his hands. He looks at it and his jaw drops. His heart pounds in his chest. It’s a pregnancy test. A positive one.
“Oh.” Tim whispers. “Yeah.”
Lucy steps closer to him and wraps her arms around his neck. “I have heard that dogs get protective when they sense something is different or emotions are off. I think he just sensed it. And I thought maybe it was just he loves me.”
“He does.” Tim says softly leaning in a little. She pulls him closer for a kiss. “He knew.”
“He knew.” Lucy repeats and then she looks at him like she can’t quite believe this. They were having a baby. “We are having a baby.”
They were having a baby.
“Oh my god.” Tim mutters like he can’t quite believe it either. It not like they were trying for a baby. They had only been married three months. But they never did anything to prevent it. Especially on their honeymoon.
They both wanted kids and a family. The timeline of when wasn’t clear but—
It would explain why Kojo was so clingy to her when they got back. He can’t believe he didn’t see it but the dog did. He can’t believe he was jealous of their dog and Kojo was just—
He looks at Lucy, and feels his heart pounding in his chest. She has a smile on her face and he can’t help but lean down to kiss her.
“We are having a baby.” He whispers. “We are going to be parents.”
If only Kojo could talk—
They were going to be parents.
It was going to be so, so good.
