    When an unexpected stimulus unsettled him and shattered the idyll he maintained with such difficulty, Louis did not attempt to pretend. There was no one before whom he needed to behave properly anymore, and he could no longer have said what might be called good. He followed a rather simple set of rules: whatever threatened his family had to be eliminated, and he did not concern himself with the consequences.

    If there was no body, there was no crime. That was his motto, and Louis understood his vocation exceptionally well.
