Summary
A storm steals away Dormidont, a young Greek from the iconoclast-torn Byzantine Empire of the 8th century, and hurls him into a strange and merciless world. Here the soil is steeped in the blood of long-slain gods, and power lies in the grasp of four tyrants — the Bishops of the Old Faith. Stripped of everything but his father’s icon, a copy of the Gospels, and the staff of his teacher, Dormidont faces trials he never sought: survival among ruins, aid to those who live in perpetual fear of death, and an unexpected calling to be not merely a wanderer, but a shepherd to the desperate.
Meanwhile, the execution of the last Lamb and Goat alters the fate of the world forever. Esther and Judas — two resurrected chosen ones — take up the crowns of The One-Who-Waits to rebuild his cult. But where the Lamb offers her flock comfort and care, the Goat chooses the path of the blade and crusades against all dissenters.
Their growing influence is destined to collide with Dormidont’s community — but, who knows when?
