Ilya knew that Shane knew that the move to Ottawa had been a little bit less than perfect. His teammates were lovely, the coaching staff was incredible, Yuna and David invited him over all the time, and he was only a two hour drive away from Shane unless one of them was on a road trip.
But, Ottawa wasn’t Boston.
The players were different, the relationships were different. These were not the same men that he’d been playing with since he was nineteen. They didn’t know him, and didn’t expect anything of him, and it was a little scary. Who was he with this new team?
The whole situation filled him with unfamiliar anxiety. It didn’t help, either, that he wasn’t allowed to tell them about the most important person in his life. Staying mysterious only helped for so long. It was isolating, being this secretive. The nerves mixed with the hiding didn’t exactly make it easy to connect with his teammates.
Shane could tell it was hurting Ilya. Ilya didn’t want Shane to worry, but he could tell his reassurances only helped so much. Which is why, after debating and discussing, they decided that Ilya should tell his teammates about his partner. Not Shane, but tell them about Jane.
Ilya had stalled telling his team. He hadn’t told them when he’d started out and they’d asked if he wanted them to add someone to the WAG chat, so it felt strange to be telling them now. He had to find an excuse for why he would’ve lied.

The locker room quieted as Ilya’s team looked to him. This was a rare occurrence.
“I wanted to tell you all that my Jane is actually a man. I am bisexual.”
The room was silent for another second before Wyatt spoke up.
“Thanks for telling us, Roz.”
LaPointe gasped. “This is why you were so cagey? That makes so much sense.”
“We should’ve realized when he said it was an eight year situationship, no girl I know would put up with that,” Young laughed. Luca whacked him on the arm.
The room turned lively after that, with jokes and ribbing, along with loud support for their captain. Ilya could cry.
“I am telling you all now because we are actually engaged. He is my fiance. Hopefully you will all be invited to my wedding this summer, but your invites are conditional on making it to the playoffs, so we will see.” Ilya joked.
Several people laughed, a few shot him withering glares, as if the mere mention of not making it to the playoffs would jinx them.
“So when do we get to meet Jane?” Bood asked. “Should I still call him Jane?”
“Yes, Jane. My lovely Jane is still shy, but also he is very famous. I am not sure if we’re planning to tell anyone before we officially come out. We’ll talk about it.” Ilya shrugged.
Now that he had a ring around his neck and a promise of this summer, the pressing need to tell everyone had lessened. Everyone would know soon. Everyone. They were going to reach the other side. It was nearly time now.
