Work Text:

Beetlejuice floats into Lydia's room holding a bottle of dish soap.

“Hey, Lyds, are you busy?” Beetlejuice says, fiddling with the bottle of soap in his hands.

Lydia looks up from her homework and replies with “yeah, im doing homework. Why?” She pauses, then continues, “Why did you bring soap with you?”

Beetlejuice replies with “I was gonna ask if you wanted to set up a slip and slide in the hallway and put soap on it.”

Lydia tosses her pencil on her desk and pushes her chair out.

“Why didn't you start with that? Let's do it!” Lydia exclaims.

Lydia gets up from her desk and walks to the hallway with Beetlejuice.

Beetlejuice hands the bottle of dish soap to Lydia.

“‘Kay, wait here im gonna go get the slip and slide. I found one in the attic.” Beetlejuice says, then he makes his way down the stairs.

Beetlejuice makes his way up to the attic.

He steps onto the maitlands couch and reaches behind it.

He pulls out an old box. He looks inside quickly.

A slip ‘n slide with faded colors on it sits inside.

He picks up the box with a wide smile, then he goes back to the hallway.

He drops the box onto the floor and opens it.

“Alright, you set it up, and I’ll get some water to pour on it,” Beetlejuice says while going back down the stairs.

Lydia nods, then starts unpacking the slip ‘n slide.

She unfolds it and lays it out in the hallway.

Starting from her room at the end of the hallway and ending in front of the stairs.

By the time she's finished setting it up, Beetlejuice has gotten a pot of water.

He dumps the water on the slip ‘n slide, making sure it gets everywhere.

Lydia pours the dish soap all over the colorful tarp.

“Alright! You want to slide first?” Beetlejuice asks, while staring at the bubbles forming.

Lydia smirks and replies, “Of course!”

Lydia walks to the other side of the hallway.

She stands at the back for a few seconds, then throws herself down the slip 'n slide.

Beetlejuice smiles widely as Lydia slides.

Lydia slides through the soap and then, with a loud crash, Lydia gets launched down the stairs and hits the floor.

A loud sob comes from downstairs. "Hey, Lydia, you uh…" he pauses, then starts up a second later. "You okay, kid?" Beetlejuice shouts from the top of the stairs.

Lydia quickly shouts back, "I think my ankle is broken!" from the bottom of the stairs where she's now sitting.

Beetlejuice quickly makes his way down the stairs.

Lydia sits at the bottom, gripping the bottom stair.

"I can't move my foot… ow god," Lydia whines out.

Beetlejuice replies with "Okay, okay. So the maitlands would beat me if they figured out this was my idea, so it's either Delia or Charles, make your choice."

Lydia thinks for a moment, then says, "Well, my dad would ground me, and that sucks, but Delia would keep going on about her spiritual crap on the way to the hospital."

She mutters, "Can you just get the maitlands?"

Beetlejuice groans, then says, "Fine. I'll be back, hold tight, kid."

He makes his way up to the attic to find Adam and Barbara.

"Adam! Barbs! Where are you guys?" Beetlejuice shouts.

He finds the maitlands working on their model like usual.

Adam looks up at him.

"What happened now?" Adam asks, a slight annoyance in his tone.

Beetlejuice scoffs and says, "Why do you always assume the worst of me?"

Adam rolls his eyes and says, "Because when the first time I met you, you tried to marry a sixteen-year-old."

Beetlejuice's hair fades to a light pink, and he shouts, "That was a green card thing!" out of embarrassment.

Adam cuts him off and says, "Just tell me what you need."

Beetlejuice's hair fades back to his dark green, and he says, "Lydia broke her ankle after falling down the stairs."

Adam's eyes widen, and Barbara's head snaps to look at him from the other side of the table.

"What happened?! How did that happen?!" Barbara asks, her voice full of concern and worry.

Beetlejuice lets out a small chuckle, then says, "Well, we set up a slip 'n slide in the hallway, and she went first, and she flew down the stairs, it was pretty funny to watch, but y'know her getting hurt was a bit less funny."

Barbara and Adam rush out of the attic, leaving Beetlejuice alone in the attic.

Adam slips on the slip and slide in the hallway. He catches himself on the wall and shouts, "Beetlejuice, come down here and please, put this away, and try to get the water off the floor." from downstairs.

Barbara makes her way downstairs and finds Lydia still sitting on the floor.

The older woman leans down to Lydia's level.

"Oh my gosh, are you okay? Does anything hurt?" Barbara asks in a panic.

Lydia looks up at her and replies with "yeah, everything that hurt is mostly numb now, so im pretty good for now."

Barbara stares at her in shock, then says, "Uh, okay. Can you move your foot? Beetlejuice said you broke something."

Lydia glances down at her foot, which she cannot move or feel.

"Well, I can't move it, so yeah im pretty sure it's broken or at least sprained," Lydia mumbles, keeping her head down.

"Okay, okay, let me go get your dad, and he'll take you to the hospital," Barbara says, then heads back up the stairs.

She walks past Adam and Beetlejuice, who were putting the slip 'n slide away.

Adam grabs the box and says, "im gonna go put this away."

He heads back up to the attic.

Beetlejuice heads down the stairs and finds Lydia in the same spot.

"So what'd she say?" Beetlejuice asks, sitting on the bottom stair.

Lydia looks at him and says, "Well, y'know how ghosts can't really touch people? She went to get my dad, so now we're both gonna get in trouble." She follows it with an awkward chuckle.

Beetlejuice groans and then mutters, "Great." he quickly says, "Well, at least you'll probably get less of a punishment because of the whole 'falling down the stairs' thing."

Lydias ' dad, Charles, walks down the stairs and finds the two.

"Barbara told me what you two did. I would yell at you guys, but for now im just gonna focus on getting you to the hospital," Charles says while looking at Lydia.

He leans down and picks up Lydia.

He quickly gets out to the garage and puts Lydia in the backseat. He buckles her in.

He gets into the front seat and pulls out of the garage.

Beerlejuice watches them drive off from a window in the kitchen.

"he is gonna lay into me when he's back," Beetlejuice mumbles while watching the car drive away.

He walks to the living room and flops onto the couch.

Later in the day, around 6 pm charles returns with Lydia.

He opens the door and walks in, still carrying Lydia, who's now asleep and has her ankle in a cast.

Charles walks into the living room and looks at Beetlejuice, who's still on the couch.

"Move," he says, trying to get the demon off of his couch.

Beetlejuice looks up at him, then glances at Lydia.

He rolls his eyes, then floats up and off the couch.

Charles quickly puts Lydia down on the couch.

Charles turns to face Beetlejuice and asks, "And now you. Why did you think it'd be a good idea to set up a slip and slide in front of a staircase? And why did you let her go first?" Annoyance is clear in his tone, and so is exhaustion.

Beetlejuice, "I never said it was a good idea, I said it was a FUN idea. and it was fun… for me at least."

Charles scoffs.

"whatever. You, stay here, and if Lydia wakes up, please help her get to her actual bed." Charles says while turning away to head to his room.

Beetlejuice rolls his eyes and says, "Yeah, yeah, whatever."

Beetlejuice watches as Charles walks upstairs.

He sits on the couch's armrest and stares at Lydia.

"You'll be fine if I leave you alone for just a bit, right? Yeah, of course you will." Beetlejuice says, then hops off the couch and heads up to her room.

He opens the door to the dark room and walks in.

He sits on her bed and mutters, "She'd never let me sleep here."

He tosses himself back and lies down.

He gets under her thickest blanket, then rests his head on her pillow.

"Usually I don't sleep but I get a bed tonight, so it's a special occasion," he mutters then rolls onto his side and shuts his eyes.
