Work Text:
Shane was out grocery shopping which left Ilya home alone. He was sitting on the couch with Anya in his lap, when the doorbell rang.
He picked Anya up and put her back on the couch but she didn't stay long, quickly following him to the front door where there was a box that in big bold letters said 'LIVE ANIMALS'.
~4 days ago~
The team just won the second playoffs in 2 years since they got the hockey husbands. The whole team except a few.of the younger players and Shane were all here still.
Ilya was very drunk complaining that Shane wouldn't let him get another pet. "He said I can't get another dog or a cat." He said sadly.
There was a chorus of sad responses and then the conversation died down and everyone went back to their original conversations, except Dykstra and Bood who were whispering and giggling like little girls at a sleepover.
After a few more minutes they walked up to Ilya where he was sitting at the bar. Bood tapped him on the shoulder and he slowly turned around and the 3 of them just stared at each other before Dykstra broke the silence, "what if you didn't get a cat or dog?"
Ilya just looked at him like he asked if unicorns were real(which he still doesn't really know). "What the hell are you talking about?"
Bood spoke this time "well Shane just said you cant get a cat or dog but he never said anything about like," Bood waved his hand around looking for an example before snapping his fingers, "chickens! He said no cat or dog but never said no chickens or something."
Ilya looked like a kid who got exactly what they wanted on Christmas day, before his face fell again in confusion. "where am I meant to get chickens though?" He asked plumbing back into the stool.
"I've seen people order them online and they come in just a few days." Bood said helpfully.
Ilya's face completely lit up again and he stood grabbing the sides of both their heads and placing obnoxiously loud kisses on their cheeks. "I love your beautiful brains sometimes!" They were all too drunk to acknowledge the insult.
He dropped his hands and grabbed his phone from his back pocket, opening Google. He quickly searched for anywhere that shipped live animals. He clicked on the first link he found to a place called BERG'S HATCHERY.
He not so quickly cause god there were a lot of steps to this he thought, registered and placed the order of 3 chickens, he thinks.
Later that night when he gets home he showers and climbs into bed next to Shane and has already completely forgot of the animals to soon be arriving.
~~~
Now he can't even remember what animal could be in the box till he hears the small chirp from inside the box. He quickly checks who the package was before he runs to the kitchen to grab a knife or scissors to open the box. He finds a knife from the knife block first and runs back to the entry way.
He very carefully cuts the tape and pulls back the small flaps on the box, to reveal the small chicks, each a different color. He lets out a little squeal at the sight of the chicks. He claps his hands together in an excited little clap.
He carefully reaches in and picks one up. He holds it up and out of the box and looks carefully at it. The feathers are more of just a fur and its little feet are scratchy and small. Anya Cautiously walks over to see what he's holding. He moves it away from his body a bit for her to see closer.
"Look Anya, their chickens!" He exclaims happily.
His excitement is quickly diluted when his phone buzzes in his pocket which he can already tell is a text from Shane, and sure enough when he fishes his phone out of his pocket there's one singular text from Jane(obviously he is never going to change the name).
Jane: Just finished shopping and headed home.
He sent a quick response,
Lily: ok. Love you!
He threw his phone in his pocket and placed the chick back in the box. He knew he had about 8 minutes before Shane got home. He also knew he couldn't hide them from Shane for forever; he also knew Shane would most likely make him get rid of them if he found out. But over the last almost 2 years of being married to Shane, he has become very bad at lying to his husband. He knew he had to tell Shane or his next drunk mistake would be telling Shane.
Next he had to figure out where to hide them for at least a few hours. He picked up the box and headed up stairs to one of the guest rooms as far away from the kitchen as possible. He placed the box down on the hardwood floor.
"I'm sorry little chicks I promise you'll be let out soon." He said as he closed the flaps of the box and placed a book over them to keep them closed just in case one tried to escape.
He walked out of the room and closed the door. He ran back downstairs just in time for Shane to be pulling in their driveway. He walked out onto the porch and waited for Shane to turn the car off before walking down the steps to the car as Shane opened the car door. He and Shane met at the back of the car where Ilya placed his hands on Shane's waist and Shane's came to rest on his shoulders.
"Hi." Shane said quietly enough that no one could hear it unless they were as close to him as Ilya was.
"Hi." He punctuated it with a kiss.
They both grabbed grocery bags which meant they only had to make one trip. Once they put the bags down Shane said hi to Anya while Ilya started putting groceries away. Shane soon started to help put things away, in silence.
When they were done Shane finally spoke. "what's wrong?"
Ilya looked over at him, "nothing's wrong. Why you think something is wrong?"
"Because you are being quiet which rarely happens, you're helping me put groceries away and you have never once helped put them away before, and now you're messing up basic English that you only mess up when you're hiding something or something is wrong." He took a few steps closing the space between him and Ilya and threw his arms around Ilya's neck. "What happened, baby?"
He wasn't sure if it was the endearment or Shane being so close, but one of them made him break; Maybe both. "Come with me." He said reaching up behind his neck and grabbing one of Shane's hands to lead him to the guest room. He paused outside the door. "Ok I did this while very very drunk and I was not thinking but I also really don't wanna get rid of it.
Shane did not look impressed at this but he nodded along anyways. Ilya opened the door and led Shane to the box. He removed the book and pulled back the box flaps. He stood back and watched as Shane bent over and looked inside the box then back up at Ilya. Ilya recognized the look as the same one Yuna gave him when he did something stupid.
"Ilya. Grigoryevich. Rozanov. What the hell is wrong with you?" Shane said in a very quiet voice that kinda made Ilya wish Shane was yelling instead. But instead of doing something smart he reached into the box and grabbed one of the chicks. "Ilya didn't I say no more pets?"
"No you said I couldn't get another dog or a cat so I got a different pet that was out of rules." He said while petting the chicken.
"Sometimes you make me question my life." Shane said, rubbing his temple.
"We have chickens, we get free eggs, less shopping bill. Is smart!" He said excitedly like he proved a big mystery while holding the chicken out to Shane.
Shane stared at him like he was the cause of at least 90% of his problems; which he was. "And if we got a divorce there would also be less of a shopping bill, but I haven't done that yet." The fear that crossed Ilya's face was almost funny.
"No no no. Shane, that's not funny." Ilya said, slightly shaking his head, his golden curls bouncing from side to side.
"Neither are you randomly having 3 chickens, but here we are." Shane said, crossing his arms. "Where are you even going to put them, Ilya?"
"I'll build them a little coop in the yard. Please don't make me get rid of them, I already named them." He said.
"That's supposed to be the reason I let you keep them; because you named them?" Shane Asked.
"Yes," he held up the gray one in his hands, "This one is Jared," he pointed to the orange one in the corner of the box, "that one is Kevin and that one is Chickaletta." He finished pointing at the little white one in the middle of the box.
"like the chicken from that show Amber watches?"
"yes, paw Patrol, Shane." Ilya said rolling his eyes.
"You know what fine you can keep them but you have to build them a coop and you have to take care of them." Shane said, with what Ilya would say was the slightest smile.
Ilya placed the chick back in the box before wrapping his arms around his husband and kissing him all over his face. "Thank you, moya lyubov. You are the best husband ever!" He said between kisses.
~1 month later
Sure enough by the time their 2nd anniversary rolled around there was a chicken coop Ilya had built completely by himself while Shane relaxed and listened to Ilya complain the whole time.
Now Shane was watching as Ilya was putting up the decorations he got Ilya for his chicken coop as ilyas anniversary gift.and if he was being completely honest, he loved how happy Ilya was with his chickens.
