Rozanov’s smile was all teeth. “Ah, yes. Is gift.”
Something tripped in Shane’s chest at the idea. Sure, they’d been hooking up for nearly half a decade by this point, but four frantic trysts a year did not a relationship make. Certainly not a relationship which included gifts.
“Oh. I mean– thank you.” The sincerity felt strange on his tongue, but Yuna and David Hollander raised Shane with goddamn manners, and if somebody gave you a gift you said fucking thank you.
Even if that someone was Ilya Rozanov. Even if he was looking at you with a Cheshire Cat smile that made you think you’d seriously missed an important piece of context.
Or: Five times Ilya and Shane got each other gifts that absolutely, categorically, 100% didn't mean anything, and one time they gave up pretending.

“Why are you here?” Ilya asked, very quietly.
It still felt like a slap.
Shane must have let out a sound of some sort, because Ilya turned to look at him, finally.
“Did not mean it like that,” Ilya said. “Just… surprised.”
Shane shifted awkwardly from one foot to the next, as if he was suddenly coming to the realization that he had no right to be here at all. “I got a call from the hospital,” he explained. “They told me I’m your emergency contact.”
“Sorry,” Ilya said, in such a quiet voice it was almost impossible to hear him. “I forgot to change it.”
Shane could only frown. That did not make him any less confused. “I guess I just… I don’t understand why you put me down as your emergency contact in the first place. It’s not like we…”
Ilya took a couple of deep breaths. It looked like they were painful. His eyes slid away from Shane, like he couldn’t bear to look at him. “Did not have anyone else,” he admitted, and now his voice was the smallest Shane had ever heard it, like Ilya was trying to disappear as the words left him. “I’m sorry.”--
Or: Ilya has a car accident. Shane is his emergency contact... even though they're no longer seeing each other.

“I told you. Hollander and I, we are in love. He is my hockey player.” Ilya wiggled his eyebrows at the joke, but couldn’t keep himself from watching Scott Hunter.
“Sure, Roz. You and Hollander are in love, want to get married, spend the rest of your lives playing hockey together.” When Ilya didn’t immediately reply to that very accurate statement, Hunter continued: “If you two are in love, I’m straight. That’s how likely that is.” He had laughed and skated away, though Ilya really hadn’t understood what was supposed to be funny about that.
Standing alone on the ice, the crowd slowly filing out of the rink, Ilya was faced with a startling realization: telling people may be harder than he thought.

“You don’t look at me like I am crazy.” Ilya says, voice barely above a breath.
Shane’s brow furrows. “Because you’re not.”
“I feel like I am.”
Shane’s hand comes up to cradle his jaw. Warm palm with gentle pressure on his skin. “You look like someone doing something hard.” Something in Ilya’s chest cracks open again, but softer this time.
(ie. ilya has a very rough day at therapy and comes home to shane to process it all and feel comfort)
