Work Text:
Evie walks down the hallways of Auradon prep with a sigh. She wishes she could be out by the Tourney field, watching Jay and Carlos play, or hanging out with Mal in their dorm, or even working on her latest dress design, but no. Fairy Godmother asked her to work with Chad on their math homework after school today because he was falling behind. Evie didn’t want to, of course. However, she also was still in the process of learning how to say no, so here she is, going to tutor Major Jerkface when she’d rather be doing literally anything else.
Evie turns the corner into the deserted classroom and spies Chad sitting in the back of the class with crumbs all over his outfit. She internally rolls her eyes. Boys, she thinks. Don’t they know what napkins are?
Chad waves at her and she politely smiles back and takes a seat.
“You’re late.” Chad says.
Evie gives him a look with her eyebrows slightly raised. “Yes well, bio lab took a while. I’m here now. Where’s your classwork?”
Chad leans back in his chair. “I’ll get it out in a minute. Want a cookie?” He holds up a sugar cookie with green frosting, the source of the crumbs.
Evie looks at the cookie in confusion. “Where did that come from?” She asks. As he opens his mouth to reply (mouth full of half-chewed cookie, of course), she spots the container on the desk with the other cookies. “Oh I see them. Did you bring those?”
Chad swallows before replying. “Nah, Fairy Godmother left them here for us. Here, want a blue one? It matches your hair.” He reaches into the container and grabs a blue cookie before offering it to Evie.
Evie hesitates for a moment before she decides to take it. After all, it had been hours since lunch and this cookie looked delicious. She mumbles some quick thanks to him before diving in.
“How is it?” Chad asks, with an expectant look on his face. She doesn’t understand the look, but still replies, “Really good. I needed this. I haven’t eaten since-” She blinks a few times. This cookie is amazing. “Woah… it’s so soft. So delicious. This is the best thing I’ve ever eaten!” Evie exclaims excitedly. She feels all warm and fuzzy inside. Her mood suddenly shifts. And Chad now looks just as delicious as the cookie she just ate. “Chad,” she sighs dreamily. She reaches her hand out towards him.
Chad moves away from her a bit, but his face has turned smug as he puts her hand back on her leg. “How ya feeling… E?”
Evie feels spectacular. And it’s all because of Chad. Beautiful, wonderful Chad. “I feel… I feel like holding your hand and dancing thought the night!” Evie clasps her hands together in glee.
Chad clears his throat. “Yeah… So, I would love to. But, gosh, I’m just so swamped in class lately, I don’t have time. Unless you could help me? If I didn’t have all this homework, maybe I’d have time for a girlfriend. Who knows?”
Evie’s eyes glimmer with excitement and she bobs her head up and down. “Oh my goodness, I would love to be your girlfriend! Yes, yes, of course I’ll do your homework! I’d do anything for you, Chad.”
Chad smiles. “Well, great! Now that that’s settled, I hope you don’t mind, but I have to get to practice. Here’s my math homework, make sure it’s done right and maybe tomorrow we can go to the Tourney game together.” With that, he grabs his bag and jets out of the room before Evie can continue gushing.
Still rearing from her newfound affection towards Chad, Evie dreamily skips out of the classroom and heads towards the dorm to go tell Mal about what happened.
— Mal’s POV —
Mal was relaxing on her bed after a long day of school when she heard the door open, signifying that her roommate was back from class.
“You’re back early,” She notes. “What happened to tutoring Chad?”
Evie responded with a dreamy sigh, “Oh M, Chad asked me to be his girlfriend!"
Mal snorts. “Wow, that’s bold of him. You said no, right?”
Evie snaps her head to Mal. “Of course not! Who could resist that man’s charm. It’s in his bloodline, after all!”
Evie has Mal’s full attention now. She put her drawing down and got up to walk towards Evie. “So what, you’re dating Chad now? Are you sure about this? What changed?” Mal tried to rack her brain for signs that Evie was attracted to Chad and came up blank. There was nothing she had recently said that even hinted at it. In fact, most of the time when Chad was brought up, Evie would roll her eyes and only refer to him as Major Jerkface.
“He’s my Prince Charming! Everything about him makes me swoon, Mal. Anyways, I gotta get some work done, so I’m going to the library, but I wanted to tell you the news! See you later!” Evie leaves the room as quickly as she came, still with that goofy smile on her face as she closes the door.
Even before the door clicks closed, Mal’s thoughts are spiraling. Why Chad, of all people? Evie is a princess, and not just by title. Everything she does, every smile she gives, every sweet, selfless act, reflects the beautiful, amazing princess she is. Chad? Chad’s a Grade-A jerk! He literally tried to use her last year to do his homework for him. He has said terrible things about her and about the VKs, and she still wants to go out with him? And, where is this coming from? There were no signs, no conversations. Just, “Hi Mal, I’m dating Chad!” Whatever.
After taking a big sigh that does not help her feelings on the matter whatsoever, Mal sits up and tries to shake it off. She’s not in charge of Evie. She needs to mind her business. Be a supportive friend. Even if she internally has no support at all for the situation.
Evie just deserves so much more! Mal has seen all of the gazing eyes from unwanted suitors on her best friend since even before they came to Auradon and each one has made her feel like something was slithering beneath her skin. Evie could have the pick of the litter. She’s smart and funny and beautiful and talented and-
The door bursts open and a laughing Carlos and Jay flood into her room. Carlos’ hair is all messed up, probably from a noogie from Jay. Mal raises her eyebrows at them and a small smile forms on her face at them despite her internal dilemma. Jay opens his mouth to say something, but Carlos speaks first. “Where’s Evie?”
Mal’s smile disappears and a scowl starts to replace it. “She went to the library to go do homework or something. Get this, she came in today and told me that Chad asked her out. And she said yes.”
The boys both look confused as Carlos replies “Really? I thought she liked y-” Jay coughs extremely loudly and Carlos pauses before finishing. “-yapping with us too much to have time for a boyfriend!”
Mal doesn’t notice the look Jay gives Carlos as she scoffs and says, “Yeah, well, apparently she’d rather yap with Chad-dumb more. Not sure what she sees in the guy, what with how he treated her last year.”
Jay and Carlos give each other a look before Jay replies. “Yeah that’s really random. Did you try talking to her to figure out why?”
Mal sighs and replies. “Yeah, she just started going on about how dreamy he is before she left. She could do so much better than him… Anyways, what did you guys need?”
Jay blinks like he has to remember why he’s there before saying, “Oh, we were just coming by to ask if you and Evie wanted to go get dinner. But if Evie’s out doing homework, we can just bring her back something to eat.”
“Sure, that sounds good. I think I was getting kind of hangry, anyways.” Mal responds.
“Cool, let’s go fix that then.” Carlos nods towards the door and Mal gets up to leave. She follows them out of the room, still irritated about Chad, but more focused on getting food in her stomach.
—
The rest of the night goes by without much interaction between Mal and Evie and the next day neither of them have any classes together. Mal walks into her dorm after school and sees her roommate brushing her hair, and she walks towards her to ask her a question.
“Hey E, you planning on going to the Tourney game later today?”
Evie smiled and said “Yeah, Chad invited me on a date as his girlfriend and we’re gonna watch it together!”
Mal steps back with a look of shock and reacts. “What? But you and I always go together! I’m just supposed to sit there alone?”
“No, of course not! I want you come with! You can hang out with both of us!” Evie excitedly remarks.
Mal gave her an incredulous look. “But it’s always just the two of us! It’s our girl time. We can’t have Chad in our girl time.”
Evie ignores the way Mal said Chad’s name drawled out like a horrific curse word. “I already told him yes, M. I want my best friend and boyfriend to get along. Please come with us, Mal.” Evie pouted at Mal for good measure.
Mal thinks for a minute and tries to keep the imaginary steam from coming out of her head. “Fine. But I’m not doing this every time. You get this one time,” she asserts.
Evie squeals and hugs her. “Eee! Thank you! I really appreciate you, M.” She smiles and gives her bestie a quick kiss on the cheek. It makes Mal’s breath hitch and a funny feeling in her stomach. She clears her throat and breaks away from the hug.
“Well. With that settled, I’m going to go get ready. I’ll meet you at the game later.” Mal quickly heads to the bathroom and shuts the door behind her. She takes a breath and decides to ignore the mishmash of feelings in her stomach and get ready for the game.
—
Evening Tourney games are always Mal’s favorite. When you arrive, the sun is still up but not beating down on you. Then, around halfway through, it starts to set, and the sky turns to beautiful purples, pinks, oranges, and reds. By the time the game is closing up, the floodlights have turned on and the only things illuminated are the field and the stands surrounding it.
Today’s evening game, however, is not her favorite. As soon as she arrives, she starts looking for Evie. You would think blue hair would stand out in a crowd, but apparently not, as Mal spots Chad first in the stands. It ruins her mood, but she walks towards him in hopes that she will find Evie with him.
“Hey Mal!” Evie says when she spots her.
Mal smiles warmly back at her. “Hey Evie!” She turns to Chad, her expression souring. “Chad.”
Chad looks down at her. “Mal,” he says.
The announcer’s voice comes over the speakers at that moment. “Ladieees aaand gentlemen! We welcome you tonight to our tenth game of the season, Ravens vs Knights! Good luck to our team, and here’s to continuing the Knight’s undefeated season for ten straight wins!”
Mal widens her eyes. “I forgot this would be a ten game winning streak. That’s pretty big.”
Chad makes an ugly face at her and says “Uh, ya think? Duh. They’ve been talking about it for days.”
Mal scoffs at him. Evie frowns slightly. “I didn’t know either. I really hope they win though, for Jay and Carlos. Look, they’re getting ready to start!”
On the field, the players all line up. From up in the stands, they can’t see faces, but they can see Jay’s number 8 and Carlos’ number 101 in yellow and blue. The people in the stands get more excited up as the game is about to begin, all the way until the starting whistle blows and players are at each other for the ball.
Evie and Mal watch for their boys as Evie holds onto both Chad’s arm on one side and Mal’s arm on the other. If they hadn’t been so involved with their game, perhaps one of them would have noticed the expression on Chad’s face as he pondered, and perhaps they would have noticed the concerning smile that slowly creeped up on his face while looking between Mal and Evie.
At the first timeout, Mal feels Evie’s arm fall away as Chad pulls Evie towards him, snug against his side. Mal feels a burning sensation boiling up in her stomach at the sight of it. She grits her teeth and turns her attention towards the field, but she can still hear whispers as Chad starts to say something to Evie that makes her giggle. Mal can’t help but think about how she thought she was the only one who could make Evie giggle like that.
The first half passes rather quickly and uneventfully. The Knights are trailing by only one at the half, which has everyone chattery as they make their way over to the concessions.
“And that’s halftime! You can head on over to our concession stands to try our scrumptious hot dogs or stick around to see the marching band’s rendition of ‘Beauty and the Beast,’” The announcer says over the speakers.
Evie and Chad get up to go get concessions with Mal in tail. “This game is so exciting!” Evie says to her boyfriend.
“We would be tied right now if it weren’t for that foul called during the first quarter. Ben was not out of bounds. Those refs are blind,” Chad replies.
Evie giggles and Mal rolls her eyes as they reach the concessions.
Chad leans on the counter and flashes the girl behind it a flirtatious grin. “Hi there. I’ll just get two of your hot dogs and a large chocolate milkshake.” He turns to Evie. “You got this one, right E?”
Evie looks at him and says “I would love to!” She then pulls out her wallet and pays for Chad’s (expensive) food, all with a smile on her face.
Mal’s blood boils at the exchange. Did he really just make Evie pay for his food? And “E”? Why is he using her nickname for her best friend? He can’t call her that. Mal can’t believe that Chad really just got a free meal off of Evie. Evie is a princess! No one just gets away with treating her princess like that. You know what, Mal thinks. I could be a better boyfriend than hi- She stops that thought, squashing it immediately. She’ll just have to make up for what Chad can’t seem to understand – not that he can understand much – chivalry.
“And what would you like, E?” Mal sweetly asks to her best friend.
“Oh, just the usual. Regular popcorn please!” Evie says as she opens up her wallet to pay half, like she usually does.
Mal reaches to push down Evie’s wallet gently. She asks the concession worker, “Can we make that a large popcorn? And can we add a strawberry milkshake? Two straws, please.” She then turns to Evie and smiles and winks at her shocked face while pulling out her own wallet. “I got this covered, princess.”
“M, you don’t have to do that!” Evie replies in surprise with a smile on her face.
“You deserve it, and I wanna give it, so it’s happening.” Mal pays the worker, making sure to shoot Chad a look that Evie can’t see. She flashes her glowing green eyes at him and makes an expression that would have anyone back on the Isle running away screaming. He just raises an eyebrow and smirks before looking away.
Evie hugs her, putting her head in the crook of Mal’s neck, before saying “Thank you so much! You’re the best, Mal.” The butterflies in her stomach start at the touch and rival the anger she has towards Chad. She leans her head on top of Evie’s in response before grabbing their food and thanking the workers.
As they turn to go back, Evie grabs both of their arms and says “I’m having the best night with the two of you! I’m so glad you’re getting along so well!”
Mal couldn’t disagree more. Instead of voicing this, though, she just wraps her free arm around Evie’s and smiles at her. She’d put on a face around Chad if it meant making Evie happy.
The three of them get back to the stands and sit back down for the second half. Mal starts eating her popcorn and holds the bag between her and Evie so that Evie can eat as much as she wants. She does, of course. The princess has a major soft spot for popcorn and Mal knows this very well. That’s why even though Mal doesn’t particularly care much for popcorn, she always buys it anyways. She may not love the taste, but she loves sharing a bag with Evie at every Tourney game they go to.
Evie sets the strawberry milkshake between the two of them and opens up both of the straws before putting them into the cup. She takes a sip and closes her eyes in pleasure. “Mmm, this is so good Mal! Try some!” Mal laughs before sipping from her own straw. Wow, it is good. Thank Auradon for strawberries! And milkshakes. And, well, anything sweet. Like Evie.
As Mal continues to sip on the milkshake, she takes in the moment. She’s in Auradon, a land she never thought she’d step foot into. Watching a Tourney game of her boys where the score is now tied. Sharing a giant bag of popcorn with her best friend. Sipping on a strawberry milkshake shared with a blue-haired princess.
Perfect.
As the game goes on and the sun goes down, the air gets a chill to it. Mal feels comfortable with her leather jacket on, but she notices Evie start to shiver.
“You look cold, would you like my jacket?” Mal asks her.
Evie smiles at her and opens her mouth to respond but Chad beats her to it. “You can wear my jacket if you want,” he says.
Evie turns towards her boyfriend and grins ear to ear before accepting the jacket off of his back. “I love it! You’re so sweet, Chad. Any girl would be lucky to have you as their boyfriend. I’m lucky to have you as my boyfriend.” Evie looks lovey-dovey at Chad before seemingly remembering that Mal offered first. “Oh, thanks Mal! Sorry, I think I’ll take Chad up on his offer for now.”
Mal can’t tell if it’s on purpose or if it’s in her head, but Chad seems to be smirking at her as if he won an argument she didn’t know they were having. It absolutely aggravates her to no end. Mal needs a break. She needs to recollect herself. If she doesn’t, she may undo all of the progress from choosing good in one fell swoop. She responds to Evie. “That’s okay. I’m gonna go take a bathroom break, I’ll be back.”
Mal walks into the bathroom and notices that it’s empty. She does a quick lock spell on the door to make sure she’s not bothered and walks over to look at herself in the mirror.
Okay, maybe she is a little gay for Evie. So she likes sharing milkshakes and popcorn with her best friend, big deal. And yeah, she loves cuddling with her. Those are things regular friends do! But getting jealous because she wants Evie to wear her jacket and not her boyfriend’s? Demanding to one up her boyfriend by buying Evie extra food? Getting butterflies at every touch? Mal can see how that might be a little gay.
It’s not like Mal is new to the idea of liking girls – she’s known that since she was twelve. And it’s not like she didn’t know that her and Evie were close. It’s just that, she never considered those two things were related. Now that she’s thought about it, though, Mal is realizing that it may be impossible to unthink about it.
It doesn’t matter because Chad is here, though. Evie has chosen someone else, and Mal has no right to barge in when it seems like her best friend is happy. If she’s happy.
Mal leaves the bathroom after hearing enough of the pounding on the door from people trying to get in. While she’s still a little uneasy from her new revelation, it’s not because she’s upset about being attracted to Evie. It feels like her heart already knew that, and her head finally caught up. What makes her uneasy is knowing this while Chad and Evie are dating.
On her way back to the stands, the final whistle is called, signifying the end of the game. The entire crowd floods the field and Mal sees the scoreboard: 5-4, Knights. The Knights had won! Mal smiles and she rushes on the field to celebrate with Jay and Carlos, deciding to find Evie later.
—
Beneath a stone tower, there stands a man wearing a robe of peacock feathers and fake fur. He shouts out, “I’ve come to collect the princess!”
In the shadows under the tower lurks a mysterious figure, her face entirely indistinguishable, her hair noticeably purple. “Who are you?”
The man responds. “I am King Chad, the Chaddest of the land! I have come for the princess, for she is to be wedded to me as my prize wife before the next fortnight!”
The figure merely asks, “And what if she doesn’t want you?”
King Chad ignores the mysterious figure as he continues. “She will provide me with my heir! The princess will birth one daughter and four strapping young lads, all in the next five years, or she will be discarded of and repla-”
From high up in the tower, someone faintly shouts “Screw you!”
At this point, the mysterious figure has had enough of King Chad. Stepping out, she is revealed to be Mal, daughter of Maleficent. With a glowing green glint to her eyes and a dangerous smile, she takes a step closer to King Chad. For his part, he seems to have finally noticed her, but his face lacks recognition as he says “Well? Where is she? Where is my future wife?”
Mal says nothing as purple smoke appears at her feet. She leans her head back and closes her eyes as she is swallowed by the smoke, and from where she stood now awaits an enormous dragon. The dragon appears to be looking down rather smugly on the man who is now 200 times smaller than her.
The Chaddest of the land starts stammering in fear. “Uh. Um. I’ll just leave now. No need for further questi- Woah!” The dragon picks him up by his robe and holds him right in front of her face. “No! Please! I’ll do anything! Just let me go!!!”
The dragon turns her head towards the top of the tower, where a blue-haired princess can be seen. The princess is grinning at the dragon and yells out “Show him what you’ve got, Mal!”
The dragon huffs in agreement before turning back to the tiny King in her clutches. King Chad looks at her in fear as he says “Don’t do this. I’m so young. I have so much money. I don’t want to die!” Mal blows a breath at him, toying with him like a cat does to a mouse. Chad yelps before saying quietly, “I think I just peed my pants.”
“Eww.” The princess scrunches her nose. So does the dragon. “Okay, yeah it’s time Mal.” The dragon nods back at the princess and breathes in before releasing tons of fire. King Chad is reduced to ashes.
In the aftermath, the giant dragon once again is consumed by purple gas and replaced with the purple haired girl. She turns around, brushing the dust off of her pants, and is taken into a big hug by the princess, who had run down from the top of the tower as fast as she could.
“Aww, my hero,” the princess says. She pulls away slightly but presses her forehead against Mal’s. “Love you,” she says as she kisses her hero. Mal sighs into the kiss and-
“MAL. Mal. Earth to Mal! Hello- There you are!” Mal jumps as she is brought out of her mental fairytale by Professor Thatch’s hands waving in front of her face. “This is English class, not daydreaming class! So unless you’re thinking about the complex nature of linguistics, ponder on your own time, please.”
Mal cringes apologetically. “Yes Professor, sorry.”
“Now as I was saying. To properly utilize ethos, logos, and pathos…” Mal drifted out of focus again as he resumed his lecture. She had really been enjoying that daydream.
—
Mal opens the door and walks into her dorm, dropping her bag on the floor with a thump. She breathes out a sigh of relief from the day being done and spots Evie at her desk working on homework. She walks over towards her and smiles at her roommate. “Hey E.”
Evie looks up at her and smiles back. “Hey M! How was class?”
“It was goo-” Mal freezes as she spots what’s on Evie’s desk. “Are you doing Chad’s homework?”
Evie looks up at Mal before responding “Yeah, he asked me to do it. He’s my boyfriend, of course I’ll do it for him.”
Mal starts to raise her voice. “Why are you doing it for him? Do you not remember last year? He called you a gold digger! Evie, what is up with you?”
Evie is taken aback at Mal’s reaction and stands up and turns towards her. “Nothing is ‘up with me,’ I just wanted to do something nice for him! He’s changed, Mal. He’s a good man!”
“Well I haven’t seen him be good to you!” Mal yells. “All I’ve seen is Chad making you do his homework, Chad making you pay for his food – He doesn’t respect you the way I do Evie! You are so smart, you are so kind, you deserve so much better than him.” She pauses and lowers her voice to a normal level before continuing. “I don’t want to see you bend over backwards for some guy. I care about you so much. E, I-” Mal’s voice cracks slightly and all words seem to fail her. There’s only one thing she can think to do. Mal reaches her arms behind Evie’s head, and with little warning, she kisses her softly on the lips.
The kiss only lasts two seconds before Evie pushes her away. Mal’s eyes widen as she tries to understand Evie’s expression, but it’s unreadable. Mal stammers “I’m so sorry, I didn’t think- I shouldn’t have done that-”
“Oh my God.” Evie blinks three times and touches her lips with her fingers. Her gaze moves towards the ground in thought. Mal freezes. “Oh my God,” she repeats.
Fearfully, Mal asks “What is it?”
Evie’s eyes snap back up to Mal’s. “Chad love spelled me. You broke it.”
Mal exhales with a confused look on her face. “What? Love spelled? You mean. The whole relationship with Chad…”
“It was all fake,” Evie says, now smiling softly at Mal.
“And I broke it?” Mal asks incredulously, the pieces slowly coming together.
Evie giggles and takes a step towards Mal. “Yes you did, my knight in shining armor,” she says as she reaches her hand up to Mal’s face.
Mal leans into the touch with a sigh before scrunching her eyebrows, pulling back, and saying “Chad! How could he? How did he? He spelled you for three days! Oh I swear I’ll make him pay for what he did.”
Evie makes a look of disgust. “Yeah, I am not happy with him right now. We can tell Fairy Godmother about it later. But right now,” Evie smiles cheekily and puts her hands on Mal’s waist then pulls her close. Mal’s breath catches and she feels a whoosh inside of her. “I’m glad because I just found my true love," she says before pressing their lips together.
Fireworks erupt inside Mal when their lips met. She reaches her arms up around the back of Evie’s neck and kisses her back deeply. Mal sighs into the kiss and soft, plush lips move in tandem with hers. The flow of their bodies together is the only thing keeping Mal standing as her legs feel like jelly. This, Mal thinks, feels like home.
Evie breaks the kiss and rests her forehead on Mal’s. Both of them grin at each other, slightly out of breath. Evie brushes her nose against Mal’s.
“My hero.”
—
Three days pass by and they have been the best days Mal has had in Auradon yet. Outside, birds fly overhead and Mal walks hand-in-hand with Evie through the front lawn of Auradon Prep. There’s a crisp breeze as the two girls head to their first date.
Evie looks over at Mal and smiles. “You really won’t tell me what we’re doing?”
Mal leans over and gives Evie a peck on the lips. “Nah. I want to see your face when you see it.”
Evie pouts but Mal doesn’t budge. They keep walking through the grass, but then they see Fairy Godmother running towards them.
“Girls! Girls wait!” Fairy Godmother slows down to a stop in front of them. Mal and Evie pause, confused.
“Whew!” Fairy Godmother pants out. “If only I could still fly…”
Evie tilts her head and asks “What do you need Fairy Godmother?”
“Oh! Yes! I nearly forgot. I wanted to update you about Chad.” Mal and Evie give each other a look. Fairy Godmother continues. “His parents have been informed of the incident, and he must retake math. He’s also been enrolled in next semester’s Remedial Goodness 101. Oh, and he must do a public apology to you, Evie, which is currently scheduled for next Tuesday!” She pauses to take a breath. “Apparently, Chad found an old spellbook at his castle back home and decided cheating his way through math would be a good use for it. And he mentioned something about trying to irritate you, Mal. But don’t worry! The situation has been handled, and the spell book was sent to the museum.”
Mal finally speaks up. “Oh, he successfully irritated me alright. Glad he’s getting what he deserves after that one.”
Evie nods, then pauses and says “Well, is the public apology really necessary? I think that’s a bit over the top. I’d rather Chad just apologize to me.”
Fairy Godmother looks back at Evie and smiles. “Yes, that should be just fine! I’ll get that taken care of for you. You girls go have a great time in this lovely weather!” With that, Fairy Godmother headed off in the direction of the school.
The girls continue to walk for over an hour. They talk, they laugh. They flirt, they goof off. Evie complains just a few times about how long it is taking, especially once they reach hilly terrain.
However, after walking to the top of one particularly tall hill, the view opens up around them. Flowers, mostly purple and blue in color, expand throughout the landscape, over every hill and valley, as far as the eye can see. A short distance away lies the start of a beautiful wooded area, and even beyond that stands an expansive mountain range. In the center of all of the hills there is a red-and-white plaid blanket. It is held down on the corners so as to not fly away, and sitting on top of it is a picnic basket.
“Wow…” Evie gasps at the sight in front of her. “I thought sights like these only existed in fairytales.”
Mal wraps her arm around Evie and laughs gently. “I’m glad you like it, princess.”
The girls both stand in awe of the beauty they see – Evie takes in the sights around her, whereas Mal takes in the sight of Evie.
After one precious, quiet moment, the two of them walk over to the blanket in the valley and sit down. Evie reaches into the picnic basket and pulls out plates and napkins for them.
“I can’t believe you did all this for me. This must’ve taken you forever, Mal,” Evie says. “Hold on – are these wasabi peanuts?? You got my favorite! How did you even find them?”
Mal chuckles at her excitement and reaches out to push a stray hair behind her ear. “Oh, it wasn’t too hard – I am friends with the king of Auradon, you know. We just special ordered them from Arendelle a few days ago and they arrived today.” She scoots over and reaches into the basket before pulling out two sandwiches and two sodas, handing one of each to Evie before diving into her sandwich.
“You special ordered them for me? Aww, who knew the daughter of Maleficent could be so romantic?” Evie coos.
“Psh,” Mal scoffs. “Only for you, E. How do you like the view?”
“It’s beautiful, Mal,” Evie says. She pauses. “You know, I gotta thank Chad for one thing. He inadvertently helped us get together.”
Mal laughs and leans her head on Evie’s shoulder. “Yup. He sure did. I didn’t even know I liked you like that until I started getting jealous of him at the Tourney game.”
“Really? I’ve known how I feel since before we left the Isle.” Evie breathes out and lays her head on Mal’s. There’s silence for a few moments, then Evie speaks up. “Hey M?”
“Hm?”
Evie pauses, then asks “Would you like to be my girlfriend?”
Mal sits up and looks into Evie’s hopeful eyes. “Of course, Evie, I would love to.” Mal kisses her and smiles. “Oh, and E?”
“Yeah?” Evie replies.
“Don’t take cookies from Chad anymore. I make them much better.”
