Chapter Text
Before we knew it, six years after we had fled from Berk passed in a blink of an eye. Who knew that running away from home would lead me to meet the most amazing people in my life? I had my friends who I consider my family and accept who I am and I somehow earned the title “Title: Dragon Master”. Pretty cool, right?
Although the best part of all of this has to be hjartað mitt. Freyja knows how much I love this man -dragon?- even just thinking of him makes my heart beat faster.
Well, enough simping over my dear mate, our life on Dragon Edge has been good so far.
Although we did run into dragon hunters and their leader almost killed us but it's fine, they're gone now.
While killing him wasn't my proudest moment, I had no other choice. If I had let him live, he would have just repeated it all over again so it was a necessary evil.
Hakan's coming of age is coming up soon and we were contemplating whether we wanted to consummate our mating bond, even if we would be six years late.
Who knew that just a few days later, my worst fears would come true?
I miss you Hakan….. come back to me…. please……

Hakan was in his dragon form with Hiccup on his back as they patrolled the island. It was a routine for them to patrol the island once a week even if the Night Terrors were doing an excellent job at intimidating any aggressive dragons away from the island.
Dagur and Heather had gone to Queen Mala for a monthly visit and a report on what's been happening around the archipelago and about the Eruptodon's condition, and also because Dagur missed his wife. Trygve and Alva went to collect information about the remaining Dragon Hunters so it's been just the two of them on the island these past few days.
Hiccup was laying down on top of him, fast asleep. About four years ago now, he had built an automatic tailfin for Hakan so he could fly independently, although he did still have to have help getting it on and off when he wanted to transform into his human form.
It was quite funny when Hakan had tried to take off the tail by himself and struggled for a good hour before finally giving up and getting Hiccup to take his tail off. Hakan helps Hiccup in the forge most of the time, creating new inventions using dragon mucus, saliva and scales. Hiccup has made a full set of armour for each of them with their corresponding dragons, a Triple Stryke set for Dagur, a Razorwhip set for Heather, a Changewing set for Trygve, A Monstrous Nightmare set for Alva and a Night Fury set for both of them.
Tonight is gonna be a full moon and this made Hakan remember a ritual the elders in his clad had done a few times when older Furies had brought back human mates because contrary to what Hiccup and everyone else thought, Hakan wasn't the only Night Fury to fall in love with a human and he was sure he wouldn't be the last as it was a requirement for one or two, sometimes more, Furies to bring back a human they wish to mate with. He had once thought it was disgusting since a lot of times, the humans the Furies brought back were young. Maybe even younger than he was back then. Hakan physically shuddered at that particular thought.
Lately, there have been reports of Dragons that they had saved and helped going missing and that there were more and more suspicious people appearing in areas that had Dragon herds. They were all swiftly killed and dealt with but there was definitely something going on. ”Ástin mín, what are you thinking so deeply about when I'm right here?” Hakan huffed in amusement at that. Hiccup has been becoming more and more bold recently and he has to admit, it was very attractive. Since the patrol was already finished, Hakan landed near their house, letting Hiccup off first so he could take off his mechanical tailfin before going inside to change back into his human form and put on the mechanical attachment of his leg.
When he emerged from the house, Hiccup wasn't there. Hakan sighed as he went to the Clubhouse and sure enough, Hiccup was there looking at the maps. “It doesn't make sense. Why are they kidnapping dragons? What are they using them for? They don't kill them or anything, they just knock out the dragons before putting them in restraints.” Hiccup has been trying to figure out the motive of these suspicious people they have deemed “Dragon Trappers”. “Unnusti minn, you need to rest. We've rescued hundreds of dragons over these past few months.” “I know, but- something just- it doesn't feel right. Like there's something out there, the mastermind of it all, that's coming.”
Hakan sighed. There was no arguing with Hiccup once he set his mind on something. Hakan came behind his mate, pulling him into a hug while Hiccup continued to try and piece together all the evidence they had gathered. For a few minutes, Hakan just stayed there, resting against Hiccup, one hand playing with the loveloc, something he and Hakan had braided by cutting off some of their own hair to braid into each other's hair, and the other being on Hiccup's waist, although his hand that was on Hiccup's waist was beginning to wander and Hiccup definitely noticed because he kept swatting Hakan's hands when they threatened to roam downwards.
In the past six years, so many things have changed. But the most prominent change of all was Hiccup, not just physically but mentally too. He doesn’t cower when someone is threatening him anymore, he stands his ground, not backing off. He’s created so many things and has led them to great success with dragons. But the biggest change has been how he looks. Six years ago, he looked like a malnourished child even though he was already fifteen years old. Now, his muscles grew as he worked in the forge, sparred with Dagur and Heather and overall way healthier than in the past.
He looked like a proper man now, with his tall and slightly muscular build and slightly longer hair. He also packed a punch. Once, he broke Dagur’s nose when he punched him with his non-dominant hand because Dagur was annoying him while he worked on their armour sets. While it didn’t stop Dagur from annoying him completely after that, it did make him more careful, especially on those kinds of days.
Hakan sighed as he shook away his thoughts, nuzzling into Hiccup's neck, his body and mind as relaxed as it could be whenever he was around his mate. “Care to tell me what you were thinking so deeply about earlier?” Hakan just hummed, a deep rumble vibrating in his chest as he continued nuzzling Hiccup. “Are you really not gonna tell me? Fine, you're sleeping outside.” This made Hakan groan in protest so, having been given no choice since he still wanted his nightly cuddles, he lifted his head and spoke. “I was thinking of our mating bond. You remember how I told you years ago about it?”
“Yes, and? What's going on?” Hiccup raised an eyebrow, curious about what Hakan was talking about. “It’s just, um, there’s a certain ritual that we could do to, you know, turn you into a dragon so we can be mated properly.” Silence followed Hakan’s words as Hiccup processed. “Wait, you’re telling me, that all this time, we could have just done a ritual and I would be able to turn into a dragon? Like an actual dragon? Just like you? Wait, are there risks to doing the ritual? Is that why you’re only telling me now?”
The way that Hakan looked down gave Hiccup the answer to his question. “What are the risks?” “To be honest, I don't know. The elders never taught me because I was never supposed to have a human mate, I was actually supposed to mate with a female Light Fury my family had picked for me. Are you sure you want to do it? We don't know the real dangers of this ritual, what if you get hurt? What if something irreversible happens to your body? What if-” “I’ll be fine Hakan.” Hiccup pulled down Hakan’s head to kiss him to shut him up and Hakan immediately melted into the kiss, enjoying Hiccup’s taste.
“Ugh, get a room, you two.” Heather’s voice made them break away from the kiss. “Heather! What’s the news with the Defenders of the Wing?” Hakan remained attached to Hiccup, refusing to let him go. “Great! They estimated that the Eruptodon egg would hatch in about three to four months. What about you and Hakan? Will you two be producing any hatchlings anytime soon?” Hiccup flushed at that while Hakan just smirked. “You’ll just have to wait and see then.”
“Hakan!” Hiccup squawked in indignation while Heather and Hakan chuckled. “Speaking of children, Dagur informed me that he and Mala are most likely going to start trying for a kid. Which means I’m the only one who's single and childless out of the three of us soon.” That one earned a laugh from Hiccup. Then, some nasty part of his soul reminded him of his cousins. What were they like now? Is Snotlout still loud and trying to get Astrid's attention every few seconds? What's his Father doing now? How was the village holding up? Did Gobber handle his disappearance well or not?
There was always something in the back of his mind asking himself that if they went back, would everyone just accept him back? Of course not. He was supposed to kill the Monstrous Nightmare, become a true viking and make his father proud. But no, he just went ahead and left, running away from his fears like the coward he was. Instead of honoring his father and making him proud, he disappointed him instead, like always.
“Hiccup? Are you alright, hjartað mitt?” Hiccup snapped out of his thoughts, shaking his head. “Yeah, I'm fine. Just- thinking of how we can get rid of those Dragon Trappers once and for all.” Heather and Hakan shot a look at each other. “You know neither of us are buying that excuse, Hiccup.” “It's nothing! Really…. I was just- what if I never left? Would me and Hakan be accepted? Would we have met you four? What about Queen Mala?” Heather’s expression softened at Hiccup’s words. No matter how much Hiccup acts like their badass leader, times like these remind her of the fact that this was still Hiccup, not the feared “Dragon Master” that the dragon hunters call him. Not the leader of the Dragon Riders, or the former Heir to Berk, just Hiccup.
Their tense moment was broken by the all too familiar sound of Trygve's voice as he and Mimi practically cannonballed into the haystack that was only really placed there because of them. “You two alright?” A thumbs up appeared from beneath the haystack to answer Heather’s question. “I kept telling you to slow down! Now look at you, in the haystack once again.” Alva and her dragon, Flare, landed as Trygve and Mimi both got up from the haystack. Hiccup had a theory that a dragon rider and their dragon have similar personalities, and Trygve and Mimi were his evidence since both of them are pretty clumsy.
“Alva! Was there any info you could get about the dragon hunters?” “Nothing. Do you think the Dragon’s Eye is telling us something else? A threat that none of us have ever seen before?” Alva’s words made Hiccup pause, contemplating it. They had found the Dragon’s Eye about four years ago and it was the reason why they found Queen Mala three years ago. It was also the reason why they had to kill for the first time since Viggo and his Dragon Hunters were too relentless. They thought that was the end of it but it looks like Norms are against him once more.
But what if this time, he fails? What if they aren’t prepared enough? What if something happens to any of them while they were out? Odin's beard, he would probably sound so overbearing if he suggested they all stick together for now even when they still didn’t even know exactly what the threat was. There were endless possibilities right now, they couldn’t risk anything. Even if they had gone up against Viggo and Ryke Grimborn a year ago and freed all the dragons that were trapped.
“How about we all stick together for now? Stay low and try to figure out just what really is the threat we have to be ready for.” Hakan suggested, knowing exactly what Hiccup was thinking. Six years into their relationship and they could read each other like a book that they’ve memorized a thousand times over. Odin's beard, Hiccup loved this man so much and how understanding he is.
“What do you say, kærr? Or do you want to go and find out what it is ourselves?” Hiccup contemplated his choices. He knew that Hakan would never let him get hurt, but what if Hakan gets hurt? “I can come with you guys. We could also maybe find new islands to explore.” Heather proposed. “Alright then, it’s settled, Heather is coming with us. How about we go next week?” HIccup didn’t answer since Hakan already knew that his answer would be yes.
“We’ll keep guard here when you guys are gone. Maybe even do a little more decorating around here, especially the dome.” Alva grumbled the last part under her breath as she and Flare went to their hut to probably come up with decoration ideas. Trygve and Mimi followed after them, it was quite adorable how Trygve always followed Alva since he sees her as a mother figure.
“Alright then, what's the plan Hiccup?” Heather patted Hiccup's shoulder. “We should explore islands first, maybe we would even find new dragons along the way too.” Hiccup suggested and Hakan and Heather nodded their heads. “Sounds good. I'll come back the day before we need to head out, I need to check on whether there's any Dragon Trappers in the islands near us.” Heather climbed into Windshear's back, saluting to the two of them before they flew away.
Now, that leaves the two of them alone again. Hakan snuggled into Hiccup, a low sound vibrating deep in his chest. Hiccup chuckled, reaching up to kiss Hakan’s cheek. “About that ritual you were telling me about earlier…” Hakan paused before sighing. He knew that once Hiccup made up his mind about something, he wouldn’t back down no matter what, even if that certain thing could potentially kill him. “You sure?”
“I haven’t been more sure of anything in my life, besides the time we fled Berk of course.” Hakan could see the flicker of sadness in Hiccup’s eyes but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. “Fine, I’m just- worried, ástin mín. I don’t think I would survive if I lost you.” The mere thought of losing Hiccup pained Hakan, the fact that he could actually lose him in this ritual if they mess it up even just by one thing.
“You won't. I'm sure of it. You won't ever lose me. Even if I do die, I'll still be by your side.” Hiccup shifted his body so he and Hakan could be face to face. Hiccup cupped Hakan cheek, pressing their foreheads together while Hakan closed his eyes, a deep purr reverberating through his chest. Hiccup loved it when Hakan did that, it was so adorable, and he knew that sound was reserved only for him.
“ek ann þér.” Hakan’s heart skipped a beat at Hiccup's words. No matter how many times they tell that to each other, for some reason he still couldn't believe it, even if it's been six years since they first said those words to each other. “Ég elska þig líka. And I always will. Until the very last star in the sky burns out into oblivion.”
Hiccup giggled as Hakan pampered his face with kisses. Moments like these have been getting rarer and rarer as time goes on and more and more Dragon Trappers started appearing. So it was always nice that they could take a break once in a while. “Come, I know just the place where we can start the ritual.” Hakan pulled away in favor of taking Hiccup’s hand with his own and leading him away from their home and into a part of the island they normally don’t venture into because of what happened last time with the Death Song.

Hakan led Hiccup to a secluded cave and basically just told to stay there while he got everything ready, mumbling about how it was “part of the ritual”, which made Hiccup doubt it was actually for the ritual and not just because he wanted to show off that he was a capable and worthy mate for Hiccup. As if he hadn't already shown how capable he was when he had taken down an entire fleet of Dragon Trappers a few days ago.
Hiccup cursed at himself for going down that line of thoughts as his mind was slowly filled with all the “activities” that they might be doing today, after all, this was a mating ritual, and what's a mating ritual without the actual mating part? Hiccup briefly wondered if today was one of his fertile days because he usually has an increase in those kinds of thoughts during his ovulation but his thoughts were cut short by Hakan's voice calling out to him. “Ástin mín. Does everything suit your tastes?” Hiccup looked around. A corner of the cave had been turned into a makeshift nest and at the center of the cave had markings writhing all around the floor and some on the walls. There was also a giant circle and markings on the floor. Hiccup thought he could faintly smell the scent of blood from the markings, which made him turn to Hakan for an explanation.
“Before you say anything, yes, the markings being made from blood is indeed part of the ritual. I’ve been collecting my own blood for the past few months because I've been planning to ask you to do this for quite a while now.” Hakan looked a bit sheepish when he admitted that he had been planning everything for months. Hiccup found it endearing that he only built up the courage to actually ask him now. “You're an oaf.” “I'm your oaf though.” Hiccup laughed at Hakan's response. “Yes you are. You're mine, till the end of time.”
____________________________________________
The ritual pretty much went like this: Hakan was in his dragon form while Hiccup recited a chant that Hakan taught him as he stood in the middle of the circle. Hakan made himself look bigger as he circled Hiccup. It was all instincts and what little Hakan could remember of how the ritual went.
Hakan started growling in a certain way as he dragged his claws into the ground, making new markings. Hakan paused for a moment when he heard Hiccup whimper in pain and looked up. Hiccup's skin was… glowing. Just like that night when they fled. The markings looked like scales on his body.
It was then that Hakan knew that the ritual was working and that there would be no going back after this. Hakan took a deep breath as he started performing the ritual dance as Hiccup began to transform. The transformation started small as scales began to appear on Hiccup's skin, but Hiccup didn't stop reciting the chant even as pain ripped through him, as if he had been stabbed. He knew that if he stopped, everything would be ruined.
Hiccup continued on as his body started transforming. This went on for what felt like an eternity and Hakan couldn't even watch anymore so he had his eyes closed while he continued performing the dance. Until he heard a roar. Hakan opened his eyes and his breath caught in his throat. In front of him where Hiccup had been, was the most gorgeous Night Fury Hakan has ever laid his eyes on.
“Hiccup?” Hakan hesitantly approached the Night Fury. The Night Fury was frozen for a few seconds before looking at Hakan and he saw Hiccup's familiar forest green eyes staring at him. “We did it? Hakan! We did it!” Hiccup practically ran to Hakan, rubbing their bodies together, causing Hakan to purr in delight at the feeling of his mate's scales against him.
“We still have to perform the mating ritual though.” Hakan sounded relieved as the two rubbed against each other. “The dance, right? The one I accidentally did six years ago?” Hakan hummed, but he didn't move. He didn't want to ever move from this position. It just felt so right, like they were always meant to be like this. They stayed like that for a moment before pulling away. “We should probably get started on that ritual.” Hakan grumbled but sighed. He knew it would be better if they got it over with, sooner rather than later so that they could spend more time with each other properly.
Hakan and Hiccup got into their human form and into their positions and just let instincts take over as they started their mating dance, avoiding stepping on the markings. The dance ended with their bodies pressed against each other and their lips locked in a passionate kiss as something deep in their souls slid into place, like they had just found the missing piece of themselves all over again.
Hakan carried Hiccup to their makeshift nest, his lips never once leaving Hiccup's. It would be a long long night for them, Hakan would make sure of it. They would be breeding like rabbits in heat, like they couldn't get enough of each other's taste. Hakan wondered what Hiccup would look like, pregnant, belly full of his offspring. It was such a tempting thought. Odin's beard above, Hakan loved Hiccup so much, and Hiccup loved him just as much.

The very next day, Hiccup woke up, his body, especially his lower parts, were pleasantly sore. Hakan was still sleeping peacefully next to him. Hiccup just laid there for a bit before he realized that he was a dragon like Hakan now. He carefully peeled himself from Hakan’s arms to a more open space of the cave and transformed. Hiccup squealed in delight when he realized he was a dragon. He almost rushed out the cave right then and there when he realized, he had absolutely no idea how to fly.
Hiccup went to Hakan, nudging him to wake him up. “Five more minutes.” Hiccup grumbled at Hakan's response before yanking him from the nest. Hakan yelped as he fell from the rock, immediately waking up. “What? Hiccup? You're in your dragon form!” Hakan jumped up in excitement, but quickly fell to the ground due to his disabled leg. Hiccup cackled, not helping him back up as revenge for the countless love bites that marked Hiccup's body from last night.
Eventually, while using the rock they had made their makeshift nest, Hakan managed to get and and immediately let himself fall forward onto Hiccup, who squeaked in protest. “You're so gorgeous in this form kærr. Odin's beard, you're absolutely perfect.” If Hakan could purr in this form, he would be a puddle of purrs. Hiccup rolled his eyes at Hakan's behavior, but found himself nuzzling him and purring. The feeling of being mated, officially now, was exhilarating and Hiccup loves it, loved that fact that Hakan was his and he was Hakan's, until the day their bodies begin to decay, side by side.

Hakan changed into his dragon form shortly after and taught Hiccup how to fly, after Hiccup helped him put on the mechanical tailfin of course. Hiccup had thought that he had experienced everything there was in flight, yet being able to actually fly, the feeling of the wind against his wings, it was different, a good kind of different, a kind left him absolutely speechless. If you asked him if he could sum up the experience in one word? He wouldn't be able to because it was something he never thought he would experience.
It was like he was back to that first day when he and Hakan finally figured out how to fly properly. It was just, well, exciting. Yet at the same time, it reminded Hiccup of Hakan's tailfin, of what he took from him that day more than six years ago. The fact that Hakan will probably never be able to walk in his humanoid form or fly in his dragon form without the help of the mechanical tailfin and leg support. Of course, Hakan being the always observant one, noticed Hiccup's sudden change in mood.
“Hiccup? Are you feeling alright? Do you feel sick?” Hakan immediately rushed over to Hiccup when they landed, worried that maybe the flight was too much for him. “I'm fine just… I can't believe I took this away from you.” Hakan's eyes softened as he nuzzled Hiccup as comfort. “It's alright Hiccup. The past is the past. I'm living just fine with you, so why bother feeling guilty over something I already forgave you for?” Hiccup knew that Hakan was just trying to comfort him, but it still didn't make him feel better.
They have had this talk a few times years ago when they were just starting out on Dragon's Edge. But Hiccup could never really get rid of that feeling that he had taken away such an important thing from Hakan just because he wanted to be recognized, to be treated like an adult, to be able to be like the other teenagers.
“Kærr… I can see it in your eyes. It's alright, really.” Hakan knew he should tell Hiccup about the fact that if they could find his home island, they would be able to heal his tailfin. But Hakan would rather lie his entire life than go back to that place and be controlled again by them. It was a life that he never wanted to subject onto Hiccup, he didn't deserve that kind of life. Hiccup deserved to be able to explore the world, to enjoy his life, not be forced to be a broodmare and be called a mistress and not be able to do anything. Hakan wasn't stupid, he knew that his family had arranged a mating between him and Ljós.
“Now you're the one spacing out.” Hiccup laughed as Hakan was snapped out of his thoughts. “My apologies dýrr, I didn't mean to ignore this gorgeous sight in front of me.” Hakan purred, licking the top of Hiccup's head. “We should probably go back, the others are probably wondering where we are.” Hakan grumbled at that, but knew that they should really get going if they didn't want the others to worry even more. Hakan reluctantly pulled away so Hiccup could turn back and get the mechanical tailfin off so Hakan could also turn back.
It was a good thing that Hakan brought an extra pair of clothes so they could wear them after the mating ritual. When they got back to the Edge, Alva was busy decorating the dome and Trygve was helping her while their dragons just watched, being little shits and absolutely not helping at all. “Oh come on Flare, at least help out a little.” The Monstrous Nightmare only huffed, not listening to her and just laid down, smirking as Alva groaned and continued decorating the dome on her own. “Good Morning!” Trygve and Alva both looked up, lighting up when they saw Hiccup and Hakan.
“Hiccup! Thank Thor you're here! Could you help me with something?” Hiccup nodded, following Trygve as they both headed for the forge, sharing ideas on what else they could do with dragon scales or saliva. “So, think you two are gonna have any hatchlings before winter?” Alva nudged Hakan with her elbows while he just rolled his eyes. “That's if he does get pregnant. We've been talking about it for some time now and Hiccup told me he was ready for kids, but I don't know.” Alva patted Hakan's back. “Hey, that's fine. And I'm sure you'll be an amazing father, unlike that bastard that sired you.” Hakan smiled, appreciating Alva's attempt to comfort him.
He and Alva had similar childhood growing up, having been subjected to harsh punishments when they “acted out” against their parents. It was why they bonded with each other so easily. It was easier to tell Alva about his childhood than Hiccup, not because he didn't trust Hiccup, but because he knew that Alva would understand his fears because of the way they grew up. “Need some help with that?” Alva nodded, knowing that Hakan really needed the distraction right now so she and Hakan got to work decorating the dome.
____________________________________________
It's been a few days since then and Dagur and Heather had just gotten back. It was Hiccup and Hakan's turn to fetch food that day so they went out pretty early to just fly around before hunting. No matter how many times Hiccup experiences it, he will never get used to how freeing it feels to fly. Currently, he and Hakan are having a race to see who gets to the island just near the edge of the fog from Dragon's Edge and Hiccup was winning.
“Are you seriously letting me win right now? I know you can fly faster than that.” Hakan just shook his head as Hiccup rocketed forward. Truth was, he can't fly any faster than this. The mechanical tailfin had its limits after all, and this was the fastest he could go without it getting damaged from the force of the winds.
“Kærr. I really can't go any faster!” Hakan tried telling Hiccup, but he was just too far away. Hakan sighed, feeling like the most incompetent mate to ever exist. He was supposed to be the one hunting for Hiccup while he rested. He was supposed to be everything that Hiccup could ever want and more. He- wait, what was he thinking?
Hakan shook his head, erasing all the negative thoughts he had and after a while, managed to find where Hiccup was and swooped down to where Hiccup had landed. Hiccup was already in his human form, wearing the clothes from the bag he had brought on his back and was drawing the island on the makeshift map he had made a few years ago of all the islands they had discovered.
“Hakan! There you are! What took you so long?” Hakan just grumbled at that, very visibly pouting. “Oh, what? Do you want an apology? Is that why you're pouting, big baby boo? Well try this on!” Hiccup runs to Hakan, tackling him and trying to playfully wrestle with him. “Ya feeling it yet? Huh? Picking up on all my heartfelt remorse?” Hakan just sighed, standing up on his hind legs while Hiccup dangled from his neck and walked over to the cliff. “Hey! Hey! Hey! You wouldn't hurt your dýrr mate, right?” Hakan lowered his head, causing Hiccup's feet to lose grip. “Okay! Okay! You win! You win! I surrender!” Hakan lets himself fall backwards and the two start to playfully fight each other.
“He's down! And it's ugly! Dragons and Vikings, enemies again, locked combat to the bitter-” Hakan cuts him off by pinning him down, laying down on him so he wouldn't be able to get up. Hakan starts to lick Hiccup's face, knowing full well that dragon saliva doesn't wash off. “Oh come on! You know that doesn't wash out.” Hiccup acted annoyed, but Hakan could see the smile on his face. Days when they can just do whatever they want without having to worry about the Dragon Trappers or Hunters were refreshing. It was like nothing else in the world existed except the two of them.
“Hope I'm not interrupting any hatchling making.” Heather swooped down near them, getting off Windshear and smirking when she noticed how red Hiccup looked. “Heather. Please stop with the hatchling jokes.” Heather put up her hands, clearly feeling bad that she made Hiccup uncomfortable. ”Sorry, didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, Hiccup.” Heather hugged Hiccup, which Hiccup gladly accepted. Hakan just watched from the sidelines, the feeling of helplessness with his lost tailfin flaring up again.
An explosion in the distance snapped him out of his thoughts as he was suddenly on high alert, “What was that?” Hiccup looked around before he spotted smoke in the distance. “Come on, let’s check it out.” Hiccup got his armour out and quickly put it on, opting to fly on Hakan in case they ran into some humans. Both of them put on their helmets to avoid getting their faces recognized.
As they approached the island, they could see ice covering it, forming what looked like glaziers. “What in the world could have caused this?” It was a question all of them were wondering what the answer could be. Hiccup has never heard of an ice spitting dragon, but then again he hasn’t discovered a whole lot of species yet. They went a little lower, trying to see if they could see anything when they spotted something. A Deadly Nadder was in a net, struggling to get out while humans surrounded it.
Heather moved first, shooting Windshear’s barbs at them and managed to free the dragon, but the Dragon Trappers were quicker, trapping the Deadly Nadder once again. The humans looked up, noticing them. “Is that what I think it is?” Heather and Hiccup land as Hiccup got his sword, Inferno, out.”Back again? Soil my britches... that is a Night Fury. Thought they were all gone for good. Looks like our luck's had a turn for the better, lads! Don't think Drago has one of those in his dragon army.” Hiccup paused at their words. “Dragon Army?” Heather looked between the Dragon Trappers and Hiccup, waiting for his signal to strike. “Look, we don't want any trouble.”
The leader of the Dragon Trappers rolled his eyes at Heather's words. “Ha! You should have thought of that before you stole all of our dragons and blasted our fort to bits!” “Yeah! Look at it!” The leader and his troops were clearly enraged, but Hiccup and Heather were just confused. “What are you talking about?” Hiccup asked first. “You think we did this?” Heather followed, trying to piece everything together.
“Dragon trapping is hard enough work as it is, without do-gooder dragon riders sneaking in to rescue them.” Hiccup and Heather's eyes widened at that. “There are other dragon riders?” The leader scoffed. “You mean other than your thieving friend from last night? You tell me. You may have an ice-spitting dragon on your side, but we still have a quota to fill. How do you suppose we explain this mess to Drago Bludvist?”
“Drago what-fist? Does anything you say make sense?” Hiccup was still reeling from the information that there was indeed an ice-spitting dragon. “He's expecting a new shipment of dragons for his army by tomorrow.” “And Drago don't take well on excuses.” The other Dragon Trappers said. “This is what he gave me last time I showed up empty handed.”
The leader pulled down his shirt to show off a scar on his shoulder that looked like it was some form of brand. “He promised to be far less understanding in the future.” Hiccup made a face under his helmet. How would anyone do such a thing to their people?
“Look, we don't know anything about a dragon thief or an ice-spitting dragon.” The leader nodded at his men and the men that were behind them began to move. “Or your lunatic boss and his dragon army, okay? Just let go of that dragon and we'll go, Strange-Hostile-Person-Whom-We've-Never-Met.”
“Oh, where are my manners? I'm Eret, Son of Eret. Finest dragon trapper alive. After all, it's not just anyone who can capture a Night Fury.” Hakan roared at that, his pupils turned into slits as he got into his battle stance. “And this is Hakan. And he says we're going, now.” Eret laughed at Hiccup's words. “They all say that. Rush'em, lads!”
Hiccup and Hakan fired a fire ball on opposite sides, blocking any of the trappers to get to them while Heather cut the Deadly Nadder free. “Go girl! Go!” Heather and Windshear flew off, Hiccup and Hakan behind them, but none of them noticed that Hakan had gotten shot with a dart. “You will never hold onto those dragons, you hear me?! Drago is coming for them all!” Eret's enraged shouts followed after them, but they were long gone.
“A human who has the abilities of a dragon.” Eret smirks. Even if he comes back empty handed, at least he had seen a human who had dragon abilities and a Night Fury in his lifetime. He had thought humans like that were just myths, yet he had found one. Drago was gonna be happy with this information.

Hakan was slowing down for some reason. He thinks it has to do with the sharp pain he had felt while they were escaping. He had a hunch it had something that would put dragons to sleep. “Hakan? What's going on? Why are you slowing down?” Hiccup was worried, yet his voice sounded awfully muffled to Hakan for some reason. “Hakan? Hakan! We're falling!” Hiccup's panicked voice didn't even register in Hakan's mind as he slowly lost consciousness.
____________________________________
“Hiccup!” Heather tried to rush to them but they were falling too fast and Hiccup couldn't transform since he was in his armour. All Hiccup could do was aim for somewhere near an island in hopes of Hakan waking up so they could go back to Dragon's Edge. They plummeted into the water. The people of the island rushed to them and the ones nearest to them fished them out. Their chief arrived a few moments later.
“What's going on? Who is this? Why is there a dragon with em?” The voice felt familiar somehow, but Hiccup was too focused on the fact that his mate was currently unconscious and was shot with a dart laced with an unknown substance. Hiccup pried himself away from the person trying to separate him from Hakan and rushed to his mate.
“Hakan? Hakan? Hey, stay with me. You promised we'd be together for eternity. Don't you dare leave me!” Hiccup shook Hakan vigorously, but Hakan didn't budge. Just as one of the others tried to pull Hiccup away, Heather swooped in. “Hiccup! Take this! Hakan is transforming back!”
Heather tossed Hiccup a spare blanket she had in her travel bag to cover Hakan up. Hiccup hadn't even realized that Hakan was transforming back from how distraught he was. “Hiccup?” Hiccup froze when he realized why he recognized that voice. He looked up and saw the man he never thought he would ever see again. “Dad?”
Heather and Windshear stood between Hiccup and the people of Berk, ready to defend them if they tried anything. “Hiccup, is Hakan alright?” Heather's words snapped Hiccup out of his daze as he checked Hakan's pulse. It was steady, nothing seemed to be wrong, just that he wasn't waking up.
“He's fine, but he isn't waking up. They must have put something in that dart that knocked him out.” “Hold on! What is going on here? You two have been thought to be dead for six whole years!” Hiccup rolled his eyes at the sound of Mildrew's voice. “If we tell you, do you promise not to hurt our dragons?”
“Our dragons? Are you telling me…. you made friends with these- these- beasts?” “Don't you dare call my mate a beast!” Hiccup snapped at Mildrew, snarling as his skin glowed and scales appeared. Hiccup took a few deep breaths, calming himself. He's been really protective of his mate for some reason.
“Look. Dragons aren't what all of you think they are. They're just like us. They were being controlled by a queen dragon called Red Death and she ate any dragon that she deemed useless to her.” Hiccup tried explaining, but the crowd erupted into protests, saying that he was lying. “Stop! All of you! We have just gotten someone valuable back and this is how you treat him?!” The village immediately went dead silent after hearing Stoick's booming voice.
Hiccup sighed, taking his helmet off and running his hand through his hair. They had two options. Either stay in Berk until Hakan fully recovers and is able to fly again, or they flee Berk right now, and Hiccup is leaning more towards the latter. “Hiccup. The one unconscious is Hakan, right? That boy you brought back years ago and disappeared with.” Hiccup only nodded at Stoick's question, confirming that the one who had literally just turned from a dragon and into a human was indeed Hakan.
“Did I hear someone say Hiccup?!” Gobber rushed to the port as fast as he could with his peg leg, squeezing between the people just to reach Hiccup. “Hiccup! You're back! I thought you and yer mate died!” Gobber engulfed Hiccup into a tight hug, which Hiccup gladly accepted.
“Wait, you knew about this Gobber?” Gobber looked up, having just remembered that the other villagers were there too. “Oh, right, I never did tell you about the truth. But yes, I knew that the boy Hiccup had brought back was a dragon who can turn human and that he and Hiccup have practically been married for six years now.”
“Practically married?! What are you talking about?” Gobber looked at Stoick, realizing he just revealed a very important secret. “Uh, this is gonna take a while to explain.” Gobber looked at Hiccup apologetically and Hiccup just sighed.
____________________________________
“So, yeah. That's basically what happened these past six years.” Hiccup sighed, leaning back against his chair as he let his father, Gobber and Spitelout all process everything he had just said. Hakan was with Gothi getting checked up properly and Hiccup longs to be in his mate's arms again. “So, you're telling me, you're a… dragon now?” Hiccup sighed. “Yes, I am. It's kind of complicated to explain fully since I don't know much about it and neither does Hakan.”
They all went silent for a few moments, trying to process everything that Hiccup had just told them. “We'll be out of here after my mate recovers. That is if we don't run into those guys again.” Stoick raised an eyebrow at that. “Those guys? Who are you talking about, son?” “Some Dragon Trappers. I think they work for someone named Drago something-vist? They said he was building a dragon army or something.” Spitelout, Stoick and Gobber were shocked to hear that.
“Drago Bludvist? “ Spitelout looked nervous just saying that name. “Son, I think it would be best if you all stay here. Drago Bludvist is a dangerous man who has no morals or mercy. And if he's building a dragon army, this won't end well for anyone. Not even for you and your people.” Stoick's words made Hiccup worry. Just who was Drago? And why did they react like that? “So what? I'm just supposed to hide here while dragons are potentially getting killed and enslaved? Absolutely not.” Hiccup shook his head.
There was no way he was gonna let innocent dragons get enslaved by some dude who thinks he's gonna build a dragon army. “Hiccup, look. I know you care for those dragons, but this is the only option we have-” “No! The dragons are my people!” All three of them flinched at Hiccup's outburst. They saw how patterns on Hiccup's skin glowed as more and more sales appeared and how his shout sounded like a dragon's roar.
They had never seen Hiccup react like that to anything in the past, but it really showed how attached Hiccup has become to dragons. “Hiccup. I know this is hard. But there's only so much we can do.” Spitelout tried explaining to Hiccup, but Hiccup wasn't having any of it. “Then we just kill Drago. Easy as that. You said he was dangerous, right? Then let's fucking kill that son of a bitch.” Hiccup snarled.
It was very weird and unsettling for the three of them to hear Hiccup saying those kinds of things because in the past, Hiccup had always just wanted to be good. Now, Hiccup had learned his lesson after the incident with the Red Death. He knew that killing is a necessary evil, and fighting that monster of a “Queen” and the Grimborn brothers had taught him that.
“Well, we could. But, where do we even find him?” Gobber rubbed his beard, trying to come up with ideas on how to find Drago with only using the limited resources they had. “Me and the other dragon riders will go find him. It isn't safe to be here with the dragons because his men are too close.” “So, you're leaving again?” Hiccup looked up, noticing his father's expression.
It was odd, seeing Stoick the Vast look sad. It made Hiccup realize just how much of a bad son he was. Yes, he ran away because he couldn't handle all the responsibility that was put on him and also due to the fact that he just could never kill a dragon, yet, he hasn't considered his father's feelings over losing his only son. “Look, dad, I don't really have a choice. It's not safe here for me or the others.” Hiccup sighed, but Gobber suddenly got up, looking determined. “Then we're coming with you.”
“Absolutely not! It's too dangerous! The Scauldron could kill you!” Hiccup objected. There was no way he was going to let anyone from Berk get hurt just because he was incapable of getting rid of someone dangerous. Just then, a knock was heard and Gothi walked in. She waved her hand, telling Hiccup to come with her. Hiccup immediately followed after her, worried about his mate.
____________________________________
Hakan groaned, getting up from what he assumed was a bed, and took a look around. He definitely wasn't on Dragon's Edge judging from his surroundings and the fact that Gothi was there and Hiccup wasn't by his side, hovering over him. Hakan noticed familiar things in the room. He had definitely been here before, but when? Hiccup came barging into the room before Hakan could think more about it and immediately embraced him. “You oaf! You could have died! Why didn't you say anything?!”
Hakan wanted to retort that he technically couldn't say anything that time because he was in his dragon form, but that thought was quickly shut down when he saw Hiccup's teary eyes. “I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking kærr. I didn't mean to worry you.” Hakan kissed Hiccup's forehead, calming him down. The substance in the dart seemed to have worn off and fortunately was just to knock dragons out.
Hiccup just stayed there for a few moments, listening to Hakan’s heart beat to reassure himself that his mate was safe, he was alive, that he wasn't gonna be leaving anytime soon. It was only when Hakan started talking to him, just talking about anything really, to calm Hiccup down that Hiccup finally let his tears fall. Hakan kept whispering into his ears, letting him calm down in his embrace. “I thought I was gonna lose you.”
“You won't, kærr. You won't ever lose me. Because even if we get separated, I will always find my way back to you, no matter how long it's been or if we're in a different form. I will always be yours.” Hakan had noticed Stoick standing by the doorway but neither of them said anything, not wanting to startle Hiccup.
Stoick just stood by the doorway, observing how Hakan and Hiccup interacted with each other. Their love reminded Stoick of him and Valka in the past, before she got abducted. For a long time after that incident, he couldn't even look at Hiccup because he looked so much like Valka, it reminded Stoick of what he had lost. It was only after Hiccup announced he was a boy when he was around thirteen that Stoick finally looked at him properly. Hiccup had cut his hair by that point and looked less like Valka, but the resemblance was still uncanny. That didn't mean that he loved him any less because of it.
Hiccup has and will always be his pride and joy, even if he was born smaller than the others, even if he had originally been a girl, even after all these years that he spent wondering if his son was even alive. Stoick had made up his mind when he saw how much Hakan really adored Hiccup that he would give them his blessing to officially get married, even though they technically already are.
Witnessing the way Hakan held Hiccup made Stoick long to be able to wrap his arms around Valka once more, to feel her warmth even for just a moment, even if it was during his last breath. Stoick cleared his throat and knocked on the door, announcing his presence. “Son, Hakan.” Hakan glanced up, nodding his head in acknowledgement at Stoick’ while Hiccup refused to separate from Hakan.
“Chief. It's been a while. I apologize for kidnapping your son six years ago.” Hakan's attempt at making a joke to lighten the mood only earned him an amused snort from father and son and a smack on the shoulder from Hiccup. “Ow! I was only trying to lighten up the mood.” Stoick let out a small chuckle at their bickering.
“Alright you two, since Hakan is awake now and seems to be fairly alright, what do you two plan to do now? Because there is absolutely no way we're going to let you go after Drago alone.” Hakan shot a confused look at Hiccup at that. “Kærr, what does your father mean by that?” Hiccup looked away, not daring to answer Hakan's question. “Hiccup, ástin mín, we're seriously considering going after the leader of those men? Alone? With no backup whatsoever?”
“I have you and the others. This mission is more dangerous than anything we have faced before, and yes, that includes the Red Death. We don't know what that Drago guy has up his sleeves.” Hakan sighed, knowing that Hiccup did have a point, but he felt like Hiccup was underestimating the Vikings. They had literally held their ground against dragons for centuries without ever moving from the island; they could probably hold their own against a dragon army if given time to prepare.
“Hiccup, I know you want to protect the people of Berk, but they have held their own against dragons for three hundred years, just because dragons haven't been raiding the village in five years. The final decision is yours, but I'm telling you, we need all the help we can get against that Drago guy.”
Hiccup sighed, knowing that Hakan was right, that they indeed need all the help they could possibly get against this enemy they have never faced before, they couldn't predict anything that would happen. He just didn't want to endanger the people of Berk. Sure, they did shun him and exclude him from a lot of things most of his life, but there were children here, and he didn't want them to feel the pain of not losing a parent like he did.
“Take your time to decide, son. If you need me, you know where to find me.” And with that, Stoick left, leaving the two alone once more. Hiccup groaned, slumping against Hakan. He was absolutely exhausted.
It was already late at night and Hiccup had barely gotten any sleep the day before because something was just bothering him all night. “You alright? Do you feel anything weird?” Hakan started fussing over Hiccup, checking his temperature or for any injuries that might have been missed.
Hiccup sighed. He's been having this weird dream over and over again these past few days, ever since the transformation ritual and it was bothering him a lot. His dream kept showing him a blob that sort of looked like a dragon egg. It was just a really weird thing to dream about. “Something bothering you, kærr? You seem more exhausted than usual.” Hakan's worried question snapped him out of his thoughts.
“I'm fine, just a weird dream I've been having.” Hiccup admitted, closing his eyes. Hakan raised an eyebrow at that. The mention of a strange dream seemed familiar to him, yet he couldn't grasp where he had heard it from. Maybe he had heard it from one of the elder night furies, but it's been eleven years since he's been at the den of Night Furies that he can't remember what it meant.
“Do you think it's something we should be worried about?” Hiccup shook his head. “We already have too many things to worry about right now. Maybe it's just a weird thing that happens because of the transformation ritual.” Hakan hummed. It still bothered him though. He never heard of such a symptom after a transformation ritual and something nagged at him, like what it meant was crucial information, but he decided to let it go, not wanting to stress Hiccup out.
“Maybe. Let's just get some rest for now. We'll probably find out what it means eventually anyways.” Hiccup nodded in agreement. It's been a really long day for both of them and the best thing to do is rest for now. They had a long few weeks ahead of them after all.
____________________________________
The next day, Hiccup woke up first as usual and gave Heather a basic briefing about what they were to be dealing with and sent her out to go to Dragon's Edge to inform the others about the situation for back up. After that, Hiccup took a stroll around the village to see what had changed during his absence. When he got to the Dragon Training ring, he paused. The Dragons were still there, but they didn't seem to be mistreated like before.
“Knew you'd visit this place sooner than later.” A familiar voice said from behind him, causing him to turn around. “Astrid! Were you the one who cared for these Dragons?” Hiccup said, smiling as he approached her. “Yup. Although I would have loved to free them, the elders wouldn't let me, so this is the least I could do.”
Astrid scratched her head sheepishly. “Could you open the cages? I want to talk to them.” Astrid was shocked at Hiccup's words. “You can talk to Dragons now?” Hiccup nodded. “Long story.” Astrid nodded in understanding and went to the levers, pulling them all down to release all the Dragons.
The Deadly Nadder immediately rushed to Astrid, but instead of attacking her, the Deadly Nadder started nuzzling her. “Woah girl! Easy!” Astrid laughed as the Nadder started licking her. “Stormfly! You know that doesn't wash off!” Hiccup watched the two interact with a smile on his face.
He was glad that the Dragons seemed to be well looked after by Astrid. He looked at the other Dragons who looked at him warily, they seemed to recognize him. Hiccup got behind one of the big shield walls and took off his clothes before transforming. He let out a chirp as he walked out from behind the shield wall, letting them know he was friendly.
“Hiccup? Is that you? You're an actual Dragon! Like Hakan!” Astrid squealed in excitement. She never thought that it was possible for people to become a Dragon, aside from Hakan of course, he didn't count since he was technically a dragon who could turn human. Hiccup nodded at Astrid before focusing his attention at the other Dragons.
“My name is Hiccup, my mate's name is Hakan, may I also know your names?” The Monstrous Nightmare was the first to speak up. “Why should we tell you? You were human just moments ago.” The Gronckle nudged the Monstrous Nightmare. “He's a Night Fury, Hookfang! He's the pup's mate!” The Hideous Zippleback bowed their heads to match Hiccup's eye level. “Our names are Barf and Belch. How has little Hakan been doing?” “He's fine. Just resting for now.”
Just then, they heard a sorrowful groan followed by a whine of “Hiccup!” Hiccup sighed, rolling his eyes. He knew exactly who that was. He turned around and there his mate was, in his Dragon form, dragging himself along the ground, like an abandoned puppy. “I'm right here kærr! I didn't leave.” Hakan perked up at the sound of Hiccup's voice and practically sprinted to him when he spotted him. Hiccup sighed but laughed when Hakan started licking and nuzzling him.
“It's the pup!” The Gronckle squealed in delight at the sight of Hakan. Hakan looked at them, tilting his head, confused on who they were and why they knew him and why they refer to him as “pup”. He doesn't remember them, but then again, he can't remember the five years he spent under the influence of the Red Death, so maybe he met them during that.
“I apologize, but do you know me?” The Monstrous Nightmare approached them. “It looks like the Queen made sure to have erased your memories during your time under her influence. I'm Hookfang.” “We're Barf and Belch” “I'm Meatlug” “And I'm Stormfly”
The Dragons all introduced themselves one by one. Hakan was still very confused about what was happening and just nodded along. “You two are the ones who killed the Queen five years ago, weren't you?” the Deadly Nadder, Stormfly, questioned. “Yes, we are. Why?” Hiccup tilted his head. All the Dragons then suddenly bowed down, startling them.
“That means Hakan is now the Alpha of our pack. He's the most powerful Dragon amongst us and the one who killed the Queen after all.” Hiccup looked at Hakan, who looked just as confused as he was. “Wait, that's how it works? Isn't it like a hierarchy?” Hakan was confused. His pack was more like a hierarchy since his father was the leader and he was the one set to inherit the pack, so he always thought it was how it worked for every pack.
“Yes. I guess you Furies have it different.” The Gronckle, Meatlug, commented. Meanwhile, Astrid was looking at all of them in confusion, wondering what was happening. Hakan nodded at Meatlug's comment. “So, I'm an alpha now? What do I even do?” The Monstrous Nightmare laughed. “Whatever you want to do pup. You have the power now.” Hakan paused for a moment before deciding to mess with his mate.
“Then, can we have hatchlings, kærr?” His question earned him a hard smack on the head from Hiccup. The other Dragons laughed at their interaction, finding their dynamic adorable. “You two are perfect for one another.” Stormfly said and the other dragons all agreed with her.
“Okay, hold on, even if I can't understand what any of you are saying right now, I have a feeling you're getting off track. We still need to plan on how to take that Drago guy down, right?” Astrid interrupted. Hiccup promptly went to the shield wall he was behind before, transformed back into his human form, put on his clothes, and walked out.
“Right, I need to talk with… the chief, about that.” Hiccup sighed, running his hand through his hair. “Wait, actually, we can pair up these dragons with people.” Hiccup looked at Astrid for advice on who would pair well with which Dragon. “Well, personally, I think the Hideous Zippleback should be paired with the twins, the Monstrous Nightmare with Snotlout, and the Gronckle with Fishlegs.” “And Stormfly with you, right? You seem to get along with her really well.” Hiccup smiled.
____________________________________
The teams were quickly assembled after that. Although Snotlout did spend some time trying not to cry and acting tough at seeing his dear cousin again while Hiccup explained everything. The Dragons seemed to bond fairly well with their paired humans, except Hookfang of course, he liked messing with Snotlout.
Hakan stayed in his Dragon form, refusing to leave Hiccup's side, occasionally nuzzling him just because. “So, you're actually married to a Dragon? Who can apparently turn human? That's awesome.” Tuffnut commented. “How long have you two been married? And how does it feel?” Ruffnut added. The twins were really curious how it feels like to be with a Dragon.
“Stop bombarding Hiccup with questions. He's probably overwhelmed with everything happening all at once.” Astrid butted in. “Thank you Astrid. I'll answer your questions later. For now, you all need to bond with your Dragons. Me and Hakan will get permission to scout around and find out more information about Drago's Dragon Army and that mystery Dragon Rider who supposedly destroyed one of the delivery ports they had.” The others nodded with the plan.
They all split up after that, the others going to try and bond with their Dragons and learn how to ride them while Hiccup and Hakan went to go find Stoick. “So, you're telling me, you two are going to go out there? Alone? With no back up whatsoever?” Stoick looked ready to suggest multiple people to go with them but Hiccup cut him off before he could say anything. “Dad, we'll be fine. Both of us are Dragons. We can defend ourselves. And plus, I'm not a child anymore. I'm twenty one.”
Hiccup reminded his father, crossing his arms. “I know that, son. But I'm still worried. Drago is a dangerous man.” Stoick tried to reason. “Then we'll try to find the mystery Dragon Rider then. We're on the same side after all.” Stoick sighed, realizing that there was no arguing with his son. He really was just like his mother, so stubborn once they've set their mind on something.
“Alright, fine. Just… get back safely.” Hiccup nodded. “We will.” And with that, Hiccup and Hakan left to go find the mystery Dragon Rider.
____________________________________
Hiccup remained in his human form in case they needed to engage in a battle or there was a trap specifically for dragons anywhere near but on their first day, there was no such luck on finding any trace of this Drago guy or of the Mysterious Dragon Rider. There wasn't any luck on the second, third, fourth or even fifth day so Hiccup and Hakan had no choice but to give up momentarily and instead needed to focus on training the others because they didn't know just when they would get attacked.
Dagur, Alva, Heather, Trygve and some other Dragons they brought with them for back up were already there when Hakan and Hiccup returned from their fifth expedition. “Brother! You're finally back! Hello to you too, Hakan.” Dagur greeted them as Hiccup got off of Hakan, took off his mechanical tailfin and gave Hakan his leg support so he could change back into human.
“Hiccup! You're finally back! Could ya teach me how to fly a dragon? I think me and this one have a special connection.” Stoick was waving to Hiccup before resuming on scratching the Rumblehorn's chin. It was honestly a surprise to see his father getting along with a dragon but I guess that's what having a Dragon loving son does to someone. Gobber was also with the Hotburple Dragon Hiccup had named Grump because of how lazy the Dragon was but he was very helpful in the forge because of his fire so it wasn't a surprise to see Gobber and Grump get along.
“Dagur! Where's Mala? We could use their help if a battle ever breaks out, you know?” “She's just making sure everything is set and that their island is safe and sound. Dragon's Edge is also safe and protected and we set up traps all over the place before we left.” Hiccup nodded in understanding. They had little information on the enemy or how big of an army he really had so it was better to be safe than sorry in this scenario.
Looks like Hiccup was going to be busy for the next few days.
____________________________________
It was about a week later that Hiccup and Hakan were woken up by a loud crash from outside the hut they were staying in. Hiccup immediately rushed out with Hakan not far behind in his dragon form. There, at haystacks, laid Mimi who had all kinds of wounds on her as she curled around Trygve who was unconscious and also looked beaten up and there was even blood coming from his head. “Trygve! Mimi!” Hiccup was by their side within seconds, carefully checking on Trygve as Hakan asked questions to Mimi.
-”What happened? Did you two get attacked by somebody?” Hakan nudged Mimi as he helped her stand so he could assess the wounds on her. “Yes. They were Dragon Trappers. We had been flying too low and they caught us.” “Did you two run into the Defenders of The Wing during the fight?” Mimi shook her head at that as Heather, who had heard the commotion and also rushed to them with an emergency kit along with herbs that can help a dragon heal faster, was now cleaning up one of the wounds on Mimi that looked like it came from a sword.
Mimi and Trygve had been sent to get more supplies from Dragon's Edge and to search for any signs of Dragon Trappers nearing the island or near Berk on the way back. It wasn't a skill based task, it was a stealth one, that was why Mimi and Trygve were sent out, because when it came to stealth, they were second only to Hiccup and Hakan since Mimi was a Changewing and could blend in while Trygve was small enough to be able to hide under or inside anything.
The Dragon and rider pair were transferred to Gothi along with Heather so they could be treated properly as an emergency meeting was called. As people who were given a dragon started piling in the Grandhall, Hiccup and Hakan sat near the front, their expressions grim but unreadable. They talked to each other in hushed voices, something that Hiccup's team meant they were planning the death of someone who had crossed them.
Over the years, the thought of killing someone didn't disturb them anymore as it was necessary to do so every time. It was a kill or be killed world out there and they've learnt to be the predators. Dagur and Alva sat at Hiccup and Hakan's table as they all waited for the meeting to start. Heather was still tending to Mimi and Trygve with Gothi.
No matter what the decision that Hiccup makes during this meeting, Dagur and Alva will side with their leader even if it means getting blood on their hands once more. When everyone was present, Stoick gave Hiccup a nod so he could start. “Alright Dragon Riders. One of our people was injured by Dragon Trappers. Trygve. Him and Mimi are an essential part of our team, why? Because in this war, what we need is the ability to spy on the enemy and to ambush them when they least expect it.” People nodded along to that because despite Mimi and Trygve being clumsy, they were very good at sneaking up on people without even meaning to.
“We need to wait for Trygve to wake up before we do anything because he may have gained information about our enemy during their fight.” Alva suggested. It was a smart move since Trygve had a good memory so he could tell them all about what happened. Just as Hiccup was about to say something else, Heather burst into the Grandhall.
“Trygve is awake!” That was all it took for Alva, Hiccup, Hakan and Dagur to rush out, wanting to check on their dear friend. “Trygve!” Alva was the first to arrive in the hut Trygve was being treated in. Trygve let out a laugh despite being in pain from his injuries as Alva pulled him into a crushing hug.
“Hiccup! I have information about those Dragon Trapper guys!” “We figured, but do you feel alright? Is there anything that hurts more than it should?” Hiccup was worried. Trygve was one of his closest friends and someone he could relate to as being a “walking disaster” and it pains him to see his friend in such a condition when he could have done something about it by sending someone else with them but Trygve could sense his thoughts and immediately shot it down.
“Hiccup, I'm fine now. None of my injuries are that bad since me and Mimi escaped just in time. Plus, we managed to free all the dragons they captured.” Hiccup didn't reply as he just hugged Trygve. “The Dragon Trappers me and Mimi ran into, I think it was the same ones you and Heather had run into last time. He said something about a Night Fury and the Human who has the abilities of a dragon. I think his name was Eret?”
“Yup, that's definitely the same ones me and Hiccup ran into. Did him or his men say anything else?” Heather said as she walked over. She had followed them after they practically sprinted to the medical hut. “The Eret guy kept going on and on about how happy Drago would be since they had caught a Changewing, but he seemed kind of…. I don't know-off? I guess. Like he just wanted to be anywhere else.”
“So, he's arrogant about being a Dragon Trapper, yet he seemed like he didn't want to be one?” Dagur was the one who spoke up this time. If he was being honest, it kind of reminded him of himself years ago when he had been a Dragon Hunter, before Hiccup, Heather and Hakan had convinced him to join their side. Although he was kind of a tyrant before, that he'll admit.
“Exactly. Although I'm not completely sure, if we manage to either convince him or capture him and his crew, we could get a lot of information about this Drago Bludvist they keep raving about. Eret seemed to be close to him.” Hiccup thought it through, if they could convince Eret to join them without Drago finding out, they would be able to earn a double spy. But would it be worth it?
“He could be a useful addition and if we're lucky enough, he could be our spy so we can track Drago's actions and what his motivation really is.” Hakan voiced Hiccup's thoughts. The mates both shot a look at each other before nodding in understanding and sprinting out to put on their armor. It took them five minutes before they were flying off into the sky. “Hiccup? Hiccup!” Alva rushed after them, getting on Flare as they tried to catch up.

Eret's ship sailed steadily towards the place where Drago and his army was, trying to capture more dragons before they arrived. That damned Dragon Rider had set all the dragons they had captured over the past few days free and Eret was fuming. If he came back to Drago empty handed, who knew what would happen? “Keep your eyes peeled, lads! With this wind, we'll reach Drago by daybreak, so best we fill this ship up with dragons, and quick! It's no time to be picky.”
Eret was looking to the front of the ship when one of his men spoke. “Uh…. Eret?” The guy called Ug tried to get Eret's attention but the latter wasn't paying attention. “Not if we want to keep our-” A screech could be heard from the sky and Eret finally looked up, spotting the Night Fury from a week ago and a Monstrous Nightmare.
“Head! Off the port quarter! Net ‘em, lads! Take ‘em down!” Eret commanded as he moved to one of the net launchers. “Up on the left!” Warned one of the crew members. “You're not getting away this time.” Eret aimed the net launcher and fired in the direction of the Night Fury but the net missed. “Reload!” “Come on, reload! Incoming!” The guy called Teeney shouted as The Night Fury and Monstrous Nightmare dove straight onto their boat and the riders got off their dragons.
“And here I was worried we might turn up empty-handed.” Eret commented as he approached the two pairs of dragon and dragon rider. “Nope, it's your lucky day. We give up.” Hiccup said in a matter-of-fact tone as he picked up one of the nets and slung it over Alva. “That's one Night Fury, one Monstrous Nightmare and two of the finest dragon riders west of Luk Tuk. That oughtta make the boss happy, right? Excuse us.” Hiccup dragged Alva to the live well where prisoners were usually kept. “What are you doing?” Alva didn't understand what Hiccup was thinking but she knew he had to have had a plan, that was why they came here.
“Hakan, stay. The Dragons don't really care for cramped spaces, so they'll hang out with you. They won't be any trouble.” Hiccup and Alva hopped into the live well, closing the trapdoor just as the Dragon Trappers pulled out their weapons, startling Hakan who growled in response. “Unless, you do that. Wooden boat, big ocean- How's your swimming?” The crew members all looked at each other. “Uh….. not good.” A burst of flame suddenly erupted from the live well, causing the crewmen to jump back in surprise as Hiccup thrust his sword, Inferno, through the grate.
“Oops. Almost forgot. Can't have armed prisoners.” Hiccup retracted the blade and offered it up. Teeney cautiously takes it, looking it over. “How is this a plan?” Alva hissed but Hiccup only held up his hand to signal her that he knows what he's doing. “Just what every Dragon Trapper needs. One end coats the blade in Monstrous Nightmare saliva.” Teeney hits a button on the sword causing the pommel of the hilt to start expelling green gas. “The other sprays Zippleback gas. All it takes is a spark and….” Hiccup ducks as one of the crewmen pressed the lighter, igniting the gas and an explosion sweeps over the deck.
“Oh, yeah, there you go! Once they see you as one of their own, even the testiest dragon can be trained, right, bud?” Hiccup scratched Hakan's chin, earning a soft purr. “Give me that!” Eret snatched Inferno from his crew member's hand and threw it towards the ocean. Flare promptly chased after it. “What game are you playing?” Eret questioned Hiccup. “No game. We just want to meet Drago.” Hiccup climbed out of the live well and helped Alva up as well. Flare came back with Inferno and dropped it onto the deck in front of Eret. The man picked it up and threw it the other way as Flare chased after it again.
“Why?’ “Because I'm going to change his mind about dragons.” This caused Eret and his men to laugh from the absurdity of it. Flare brings back Inferno again, this time going to one of the other crew members, asking to play fetch. “He can be really persuasive.” Alva commented, getting the gist of Hiccup's plan. “Once you've earned his loyalty, there is nothing a dragon won't do for you.” “You won't be changing any minds around here.” Eret said with a smirk, thinking that this boy was naive for having such a mindset. “I can change yours. Right here. Right now.” Hiccup spoke, offering his hand towards Eret as he had a hand on Hakan's saddle.
For a moment, neither of them moved and Eret seemed to be contemplating Hiccup's offer. But, just as the man was about to answer, Hiccup gets snatched away as a Zippleback sliced through the port sail. “Dragon Riders!” Eret yelled as his crew went to operate the net launchers. Hakan, thinking Hiccup was taken by some other dragon, roared and climbed onto the very top of the boat, but relaxed when he saw Hookfang and Snotlout, the twins and Fishlegs.
“Put me down, Snotlout! What are you doing!” Hiccup demanded but Snotlout was too busy being a simp to Ruffnut. “See how well I protect and provide?" Although he was just ignored by Ruffnut. “Aggh! What is with all the nets?” Tuffnut complained. “Hey, watch it!” Ruffnut reprimanded her brother. Then, she looks towards the ship and sees the most beautiful man she's ever seen in her entire life with even more beautiful set biceps. “Me likey.” Eret fires a net towards them and yet Ruffnut only raises her arms in the air as the net lands on her. “Take me!”
Hiccup managed to slip out of Hookfang’s grip and activated his flightsuit to glide back to the ship. “Hold your fire!” Alva shouted as she pushed Eret away from the net catapult as he fires, causing the net to barely miss Hiccup. Hiccup glides to the sil, grabbing a rope and using it to ride down to the deck. “What are you guys doing here!” “We're here to rescue you!” Gobber answers as he lands on the deck with Stoick landing behind Hiccup. “I don't need to be rescued!” “Enough!” Stoick's voice bellows with anger.
“Well, didn't you just pick the wrong ship, eh? I am Eret, son of-” Eret's arrogant dialogue gets cut off by Stoick shoving his face away. Gobber then hits him in the head and Grump drops on top of him, falling asleep and pinning him to the deck. “Get…. this…. thing… off…. me!” Eret tried shouting, breathless from being pinned down. “Anyone else? That's what I thought.” Gobber challenged the crew. “You. Saddle up. We're going home.” “No” Hiccup immediately refused to obey his father's command. “Of all the irresponsible.” Stoick rubbed his temples, already feeling a headache forming.
“I'm trying to protect my people and stop a war! How is that irresponsible?” “Because war is what he wants, son!” Stoick shouted, causing Hiccup to look at him, a bit confused which led to Stoick realizing he had to explain why he knew that information in the first place. “Years ago, there was a great gathering of chieftains to discuss the dragon courage we all faced. Into our midst came a stranger from a strange land, covered in scars and draped in a cloak of dragon skin. He carried no weapon and spoke softly, saying that he, Drago Bludvist, was a man of the people, devoted to freeing mankind from the tyranny of dragons. He claimed that he alone could control the dragons and he alone could keep us safe, if we chose to bow down and follow him.”
Almost every Dragon rider present laughed. “Stupid.” “Good one.” The twins both remarked. “Aye. We laughed, too… Until he wrapped himself in his cloak and cried out, “Then see how well you do without me!” The rooftop suddenly burst into flames, and from it, armored dragons descended, burning the hall to the ground. I… was the only one to escape.” Most of the riders were clearly disturbed by the story. “Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with.”
“Maybe.” Hiccup said with a shrug. “Hiccup?” “I'm still going to try. This is what I'm good at. And if I could change yours and everyone else's minds… I can change his, too.” Hiccup climbs onto Hakan, patting him lightly as a signal to fly off. Alva gets on Flare too, flying off as well. “No! Lead the others back to Berk. I've just had enough mutiny for one day.” Stoick yells after his son. Meanwhile, Ruffnut is lying on the deck admiring Eret who was still being pinned down beneath Grump. “Ooh, I like that.” Ruffnut said flirtatiously to Eret. “Ruffnut!” Stoick shouted at her, indicating that they had to go back. “Ugh, okay!” Ruffnut grumbled as she stood up, but not before planting an indirect kiss on Eret, who was absolutely disgusted.

Hiccup stared ahead, frustrated as Hakan glided over a bed of clouds, glowing in the low, Arctic sun. He had the situation completely under his control. He was so close to convincing Eret to join their side, so, so close to gaining a spy that had access to information any other person wouldn't have been able to get. Hiccup screamed out his frustration, then slumped back onto the saddle. Hakan recoiled, sensitive to Hiccup's emotions. “Don't worry ástin mín, I'm going to make sure to take down that Drago guy and free all of those dragons.” Hiccup reassured Hakan.
Hakan grumbled, looking around them as he started hearing a strange sound coming towards them. The clouds began to tear as a strange person and dragon emerged, causing Hakan to growl. Hiccup, thinking it was his father, didn't bother looking. “Aw, come on, dad! Really?” Hiccup complained as he actually turned his head this time and realized that it wasn't his father but a mysterious masked figure. Hiccup sits up, eyeing the figure. “Okay, no sudden moves.”
Hiccup was still watching the figure as it rose up, revealing a dragon Hiccup had never seen before. “Hold on, hold on.” Hiccup said, looking at the mysterious dragon when he suddenly gets snatched by another dragon. His foot accidentally catches on a lever he uses to attach the mechanical tailfin on Hakan which causes Hakan to start falling since the tailfin was unlatched.
“Hakan!” Hiccup calls out in distress as he watches his mate fall through ice as he gets carried away’ Hakan watched and struggled to get out of the water. As he splashes helplessly, a trio of Seashockers carry him away, leaving behind Hiccup's helmet floating in the water. Meanwhile, Hiccup struggled in the hold of the dragon carrying him. “Hey! You left my dragon back there! His tailfin unlatched! He can't fly on his own! He'll drown!” The mysterious masked figure doesn't seem to understand or is blatantly ignoring Hiccup's distressed pleas as the dragon carried him through an opening in what seemed to be a mountain of ice.
Once inside, the dragon carrying Hiccup lets him go as several other Dragons surround him. “We have to head back for my dragon, please!” Hiccup begged once again. He pulls out inferno as one of the dragons approaches him and ignites it. He draws circles with his sword, showing the dragons he was one of them as the masked figure continued watching him. One of the bigger dragons approached him, so he extinguished his sword and drew a circle of gas and ignited it.
He approached the dragon with his hand out, just like he did when he first met Hakan, and let the dragon sniff him. The masked figure jumped down from where they were observing, causing Hiccup to recoil. “Who are you? The Dragon Thief? Uh- Drago Bludvist? Do you even understand what I'm saying?” The masked figure didn't answer his question and instead twirled their weapon- staff?- as if giving a command. Hakan was then carried over and dropped near Hiccup.
“Hakan!” Hiccup rushed over, hugging his mate. “It's okay, it's okay. I'm glad to see you two, bud.” Hiccup said as he let Hakan lick his face. The masked figure continued watching, curious on what their relationship really was. “You really had me worried there.” Hiccup continued, hugging Hakan once more. The masked figure shook their staff once more and the dragons began using their fire to light the dark cavern up.
Hiccup stood up cautiously while Hakan got into a defensive stance. The masked figure approached causing the two mates to step back so the figure dropped their weapons, showing that they will not do them any harm. This caused their tension to ease but still, they backed away as the figure walked over to them. The figure held out their hand towards Hakan and just as Hakan was about to attack, the figure put him in some kind of trance before turning their attention to Hiccup.
Hiccup was soon backed into a corner and as the figure reached for his face, he tilted it, avoiding their hand as best as he could, and there, on Hiccup's chin, was a scar. The figure immediately backed off as if in disbelief. “Hiccup?” He heard the figure say. Hiccup made an uncertain sound, not knowing how or why this stranger knew his name. The figure took off their mask, revealing herself to be a middle-aged woman. “Could it be? After all these years? How is this possible?”
This only served to make Hiccup even more confused than before. “Uh, should I…. should I know you?” Hiccup hesitated before asking. She looked… kind of familiar, yet he doesn't remember meeting her at all. “No, You were only a babe… But a mother never forgets.” The woman looked so familiar, like he was supposed to know her. Hiccup stammered as his brain started connecting the dots.
The reason why she looked familiar. Because she was his mother. Before Hiccup could say anything else, Valka put her finger to her lips. “Come.” She whispered as she led Hiccup to somewhere else.
