Learning that she was a mutant, it turned out, was not the most shocking thing that happened in the week that Gwen joined Torchwood. Nor was learning that she was bisexual. No, that was probably learning that death wasn’t permanent. And that there was a man who was thousands of years old in Cardiff. Those two were interconnected, however. Admittedly, she did now work for him, and was the only person who knew that he was immortal and thousands of years old. Which was weird.
She wasn’t sure how Toshiko hadn’t figured it out, what with her telepathy. She wore a necklace to prevent herself from constantly reading everyone’s minds, a little pendant, and Gwen absolutely couldn’t touch her if she didn’t have it on, lest they wanted her to hear everyone’s thoughts across the city. Side effect of her previously undiscovered mutation. She was tempted to ask, but since she was keeping up the pretense that Jack hadn’t told her anything, it was probably better to not invoke superstition.
It was Suzie’s power that led Gwen to Torchwood in the first place. Watching as she froze up, her pupils expanded, and she shared the last minute alive that someone had ever experienced was soul crushing, and also the most enticing thing Gwen had ever seen.
Of course, Suzie then deciding to try to kill her for discovering that she was the murderer was less than pleasant, even if that was how she got the job.
Overall, the Torchwood experience was good. Even after the disastrous run in with Carys, a mutant who killed anyone she had sex with, after her powers got accidentally expanded upon by Gwen. At least Carys didn’t want to be killing people.
But, after that, all Gwen really wanted was a long night in, watching the rugby and drinking some beers, or wine, maybe. So, when Tosh asked if she wanted to share a drink round her place, Gwen agreed.
Which was how she woke up in Tosh’s bed, wrapped in the other woman’s arms, with her head resting right beneath her pendant necklace.
All in all, joining Torchwood turned out to be a pretty worthwhile experience.
