Work Text:
Buck likes quiet mornings alone. Which sounds insane to anyone who knows Buck, but hear him out. Whenever either he or Eddie has to go out for some reason, the other gets to stay home and relax or do some of the solo house chores they’ve been putting off. Then, when the other comes home, the one that was so cruelly left behind gets to go on and on about how much he missed his husband.
Today, that honor is Buck’s.
They’d had a pretty peaceful morning until the family group chat received a text from Chris about how he’d left for school this morning without his backpack. Buck and Eddie had both been too confused as to how that happened to bother asking Chris for clarity. Since Buck had been moving slowly this morning—he’d still been in bed while his boys had breakfast—Eddie volunteered to run Chris his books and do a few errands while he was out. That was over an hour ago.
Since being left to his own devices, Buck has showered and had coffee and breakfast, and is now lying on the couch and waiting for his husband to return from war (the busy, gridlocked streets of Los Angeles).
He flips through movie titles on the television, anything to postpone all the housework that needs to be done. Surely Buck isn’t expected to do chores without Eddie around. Who would Buck talk to? Who would say “this song is so good” before every song that played through the bluetooth speaker? And, most important of all, if Eddie isn’t here, who is going to give Buck a kiss as a reward for finishing a task? No one, that’s who. Eddie is an essential element when it comes to Buck’s productivity.
The movie poster for The Devil Wears Prada calls to Buck like a siren’s song. It’s been too long since he’s watched such a seminal piece of pop culture.
Not too long after hitting play, Buck’s phone buzzes with a text from Eddie.
Eddie 🩷👨❤️💋👨🤠
want me to grab anything for you on my way home, sweetheart?
The timing could not have been better. The movie has just gotten to one of the most iconic scenes, and Buck can’t help himself. He and Eddie do bits all the time, they should definitely be introducing movie dialogue into that.
So Buck replies the way any reasonable person would.

Buck laughs so hard that he nearly tumbles off the sofa. Obviously this bit requires they be apart and texting one another, but it’s a shame Eddie isn’t home because he looks adorable when he’s confused. He pouts and gets this crease in his brow that Buck likes to kiss better. He’ll just have to kiss Eddie twice as much when he comes home to make up for the lost opportunity.
Buck💛👨❤️💋👨☀️

Okay, so, Buck does kind of want a snack but asking will interrupt the flow. He sends his husband a telepathic message to bring a treat home anyway.
Buck💛👨❤️💋👨☀️

Buck is having the time of his life. But he’s a little surprised Eddie hasn’t caught on yet. The initial confusion is understandable, especially considering Eddie had definitely been caught off guard, but the word “Demarchelier” should be a dead giveaway.
Eddie 🩷👨❤️💋👨🤠

COME HOME RN
Buck turns over on the couch and gets comfortable on his back, giggling to himself as he rereads his conversation with Eddie while Meryl Streep terrorizes Anne Hathaway on the television.
Perhaps Buck shouldn’t be surprised that Eddie’s never seen this movie, but he is. Seems like a huge oversight on the part of Eddie’s best friend. As Eddie’s husband, Buck is going to have to talk to that guy about not shirking his responsibilities.
About fifteen minutes later, Buck hears a car pull into their driveway. Finally.
“Hi, baby,” Buck says, pausing his movie as soon as the front door opens. “Welcome home, I missed you.”
“Alright, I got you some snacks anyway.” Eddie drops a plastic bag on the coffee table in front of Buck. “I dropped Chris’ backpack off, still don’t know how he left for school without it, but sure! And I took your truck, so I got it washed on the way back.”
“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Buck asks wryly.
“Oh!” Eddie squats down in front of the couch and kisses Buck. “Hi. I missed you too,” he says brightly, eyeing Buck for a second. “You stole my hoodie.”
The gasp that leaves Buck’s mouth as such a heinous accusation can be heard from space. “You wore it all morning, then threw it at me when you decided you wanted to wear a t-shirt instead,” he recounts. “I assumed that meant it was for me.”
“It was,” Eddie giggles, giving Buck another kiss. “But you would’ve stolen it anyway.”
“It’s not stealing when it was in your wedding vows,” Buck reminds him. He reaches out towards Eddie. “Lay down with me.”
“No way, I’ll just fall asleep,” Eddie insists. “We have things to do, Buckley, so get up.”
Admittedly, Eddie puts up a great fight. A good one. Okay, a halfway decent one. Because what he’s saying is true. They’ve put off a week’s worth of household chores until today. It’s just that Buck would be more apt to get up and start the laundry if Eddie wasn’t already collapsing on top of him.
“You won’t fall asleep because we’re going to watch a movie.” Buck picks up the remote and restarts The Devil Wears Prada from the beginning. How Eddie missed such a quintessential film, he’ll never know. “I can’t have my husband walking around without having seen one of the best Meryl Streep movies.”
“Hey! I’ve seen Mamma Mia!” Eddie counters, slotting himself between Buck’s legs and getting comfy on Buck’s chest. “Back when it came out, I’ll have you know.”
“Remind me again how you didn’t know you were gay?”
Eddie laughs. “Because I was in high school and I hadn’t met you yet.”
“Dude, stop being sweet when I’m teasing you.”
“Hmm, no,” Eddie says, kissing Buck’s chest. “Hit play before I make you get up and help me with the dishes.”
Buck scrambles to pick up the remote and starts the movie. He’s only kind of paying attention, his focus much better served rubbing Eddie’s back and sporadically dropping kisses to the top of Eddie’s head.
“So this is what you were texting me?” Eddie asks when the Demarchelier scene rolls around.
“Mhm,” Buck confirms. “I wasn’t aware you’d committed the social faux pas of never having seen this movie.”
“Sorry for being a teen dad and trying to support my family.”
“First of all, this movie came out like five years before Chris was born.” Buck squeezes Eddie to his chest, preventing escape when Eddie tries to push himself up. “Second of all, you can’t use that excuse for at least another month.”
“Why not?!” Eddie asks indignantly, from his place smushed against Buck (exactly where he wants to be—they both know it).
“Because last weekend you sat down at the kitchen table and sighed wistfully about how it was ‘so tragic that as a teen dad you never got to take your son to Disneyland,’ and then had our son come in and add that he was ‘the kid that never got to go to Disneyland.’”
Eddie chuckles evilly. “I can’t believe that worked. You’ve been with us to Disneyland.”
“Like I’ve ever said no to you.”
“I know,” Eddie says fondly. He wriggles forward as much as he can in Buck’s vice grip and kisses Buck on the cheek. “But you know Chris and I like to make a show of it.”
“Believe it or not, the dramatics are one of the reasons I married you,” Buck tells him.
“That and my other many charming qualities.”
Buck smiles. "Every single one of them."
Like Buck knew he would—because who wouldn’t—Eddie gets very invested in the movie. Unfortunately, Eddie is notoriously the sleepiest man alive when he’s comfortable, especially when he’s laying on top of Buck. They only make it about halfway through the movie before he’s out cold.
“Eddie?” Buck whispers, after a few minutes without any commentary. “Baby?” He gets a sleepy, noncommittal hum in response, signaling that while Eddie is asleep, Buck’s voice has permeated his subconscious. It’s one of the more unbearably sweet ways Eddie is hopelessly in love with Buck.
He pauses the movie so they don’t lose their spot and turns off the television. If Eddie wants to nap, Buck isn’t going to be the monster that wakes him up. Besides, what’s a few more hours of ignoring their chores?
Eventually, they’ll do the dishes and tidy the garden and finish watching The Devil Wears Prada. For now, Buck wants to soak up every second of his husband sleeping soundly on his chest.
Quiet mornings really are his favorite, and they're better when he's not alone.
