Work Text:
Candy sat slumped against a shack wall in Bunker Hill, fidgeting with her bandana in her hands, the faded yellow bright against the copper undertones of her deep brown skin. Everyone had heard the news. The Institute had been invaded by the Brotherhood of Steel, and they had failed. It had spread like wildfire across the Commonwealth, and everyone was on edge. The Institute was preparing to invade, to attack the only world they had ever known as home.
The Commonwealth was undefended. The Brotherhood had fled to lick their wounds after their disastrous attack, and everyone knew that the Institute would track them down next. The Minutemen died at Quincy. People had spoken of a lone soldier, flashes of crimson cutting down those who challenged innocents, but one man cannot defend the Commonwealth alone.
They would all fight, Candy knew that much. She had her own pistol, a laser she’d bought for dirt cheap, and fixed up herself. If Tai Si was here, they could run away, together. She wished that they were. That the two of them could flee, run away to the West Coast like the Americans of 400 years ago. But Tai Si was in Diamond City, the one place Candy could never return.
Maybe in their dreams they could be together. After the world ends in fire and bloodshed once again. With blue lasers and robotic voices, rather than a radioactive storm.
