Behind The Closet Door

Summary:

**SPOILERS** Takes place after Toy Story 5.

Buzz and Jessie settle in after the day's events.

Notes:

A/N: Long hiatus is long. Just had a very bad case of writer's block and life being in the way.

I had this idea stuck in my head for a while and wanted to watch the movie first before writing it out.

Enjoy!

Work Text:

Buzz lay still at the bottom of the closet floor. He stared up at the ceiling lost in thought as Jessie slept with her head nestled comfortably on his chest. Clearly not bothered by the faint green glow emanating from his body. Her hat in the darkness possibly under the jacket they were using as a blanket. The last few days felt like a blur, but the last several hours kept playing over and over again in his mind like a movie on a constant loop.  Bonnie and Blaze setting up the scene with different colored bins, boxes, and legos that they could find. The two figuring out who would sit where then finally the actual ceremony. The brainstorming the girls had in between a few parts of their play date. Sure, it didn't play out exactly how he saw it in his mind's eye. The space ranger could have done without the "ex-wife" scenario and would have preferred it if Jessie was the one that Forky walked down the aisle, but Bonnie had a real friend so he couldn't complain. Besides if he really wanted to, Buzz could always have a redo without the girls and call Woody and Bo to join in.

- We're really married. -, the thought still felt foreign, even now, with Jessie's cloth body resting against him.

He let his mind drift again, past the wedding and into the more quiet part of the day. The house still around them, just the two of them in the closet. The small whispers of sweet nothings being uttered between them now that they had some real privacy. The quiet intensity that followed as kisses trailed from the lips down to the neck. Jessie's muffled laugh as he kissed a more sensitive spot on her shoulder. The breathing that grew from slow and even to more frantic and desperate as Buzz pinned her wrists above her head. He felt his face heat up at the memory and was grateful that no one was around to see it.

His hand rested on her side. He traced his thumb along her hip without really meaning to - just an old habit now, reassuring himself that she was really there.

Jessie stirred at the touch. Her eyes blinked open slowly before closing again. Almost trapped between wanting to go back to sleep and wanting to stay awake.

“Hey there, Mr. Lightyear.”, she murmured, the corner of her mouth forming a small smirk.

“Hey yourself, Mrs. Lightyear.”, Buzz said, testing the name out loud for the first time. It felt good.

Jessie giggled softly. “Keep sayin' it like that and I might actually believe it.”

“You better believe it.”

Buzz put his attention back to the ceiling as Jessie rubbed one of her eyes in an attempt to wake herself up.

“Whatcha' thinking about?”, she asked.

“Hmm?”

“You have that look.”, she pressed.

“The wedding and what came after...”, the last part Buzz said with a smile.

The cowgirl felt her cheeks grow a little warm. Buzz caught the look in her eyes. She definitely knew exactly what he was referring to. He pulled her closer.

“Buzz Lightyear! Don't. You. Dare.”, she weakly warned. “Bonnie and the others are right down the hall.”

He chuckled and kissed her forehead. “That didn't stop us a few hours ago.”

“Buzz...”, Jessie stopped herself from nearly giving in.

”I'll control myself. For now.”, he winked at her.

Jessie laughed. She enjoyed their little private moments where Buzz was willing to show his more playful and assertive side. While a part of her wished that he was more like this in front of the others, it felt like a gift just for her. She nestled back into his chest for a while longer. The sun's light starting to seep under the door. Warning her that it was almost time to get up.

“Can I ask you something?”, she asked quietly as she gently tapped his chest with her index and middle fingers. Her voice shifting to a softer tone.

“Anything.”

“Does it feel all that different to you? Bein' married? I mean it was really just Bonnie and Blaze playing around.”, she sounded a little bummed out.

Buzz thought about it for a moment. - Does it feel different? -, he repeated the question in his mind a few times. In some ways, nothing changed. They had been together for around a few years now. Known each other for a lot longer. However, there was something that felt like it settled in his heart now that hadn't been there before. Something more definite.

“Feels like something we already were. It just feels more real now.”

Jessie was quiet for a moment. She then looked up and gave Buzz a small smile.

“That's a darn good answer, Deputy.”, she started to lean in for a kiss when suddenly a floorboard near the closet creaked.

The couple were mere seconds away from freezing in place when they heard a familiar huff followed by plastic hooves walking back and forth. Every few steps was followed by another huff.

“Bullseye, we'll be out in a minute.”, Jessie called out. The toy huffed again and stamped his foot on the ground.

“That horse always has the worst timing.”, the cowgirl sighed. She stood up, put on her hat, and helped Buzz to his feet.

“He means well.”, Buzz said, smiling. “Come on, we should get back to the room before Bonnie wakes up.”

Buzz was getting ready to open the door when Jessie stopped him.

“Hey, Buzz?”

“Yeah?”

“I'm glad it's you.”, she said softly. Her voice catching slightly on the last word. She hugged him partly because she meant what she said and another because she was trying to not let her emotions get the better of her.

Buzz felt something warm building up in his chest as he embraced her. The feeling that only came when she let her guard down, only for him.

“I'm glad it's you too, Sheriff.”
