It was as nice a day that winter in Canada could offer, there was plenty snow on the ground and it was far too cold to be outside, but the sun was out at least.
Ilya was at his beloved in-law's as Shane was out of town for a game and he was craving company. On a day like today, sitting curled up on their couch with an unfinished puzzle in front of him on the coffee table, there really wasn't anywhere better to be.
"So," Yuna said, walking back into the room to join Ilya and David with two cups of coffee in hand, "How is Anya doing?"
"Good! She has been making new dog friends at her daycare." Ilya replied, happily taking the coffee from Yuna with a grateful nod. "Want to see pictures?"
"Always." Yuna and David answered in unison. Both of them knew how important Anya was to Ilya, and if them pausing to look at (undeniably) adorable pictures made him happy, they would never say no.
Ilya set down his mug on the coaster in front of him as he pulled out his phone. Scrolling through his photo album for a moment before freezing and muttering something in Russian. At this point both Yuna and David recognized the words as 'oh my God'.
"Everything okay there?" Yuna asked with some caution, unsure if his tone was positive or negative.
But then a giant smile came over Ilya's face and she relaxed.
"I just found very important history." Ilya declared, turning his phone to show both of them. Yuna pulled her glasses down from the top of her head to see the screen, and David leaned in to see better.
It wasn't a picture of Anya, instead it was a picture of Shane. It was a screenshot from a FaceTime call, clear from the tiny Ilya square in the corner which shared the dorky smile on the Ilya in front of them. The majority of the screen was filled by a sleeping Shane, lying on his side to face toward the phone, wearing his glasses that were slipping off his face. The scene was one that wrote itself.
"Oh my goodness, he looks so young here!" Yuna said in her official I-Love-My-Son voice. "When was this?" She asked, taking the phone from Ilya to look at the picture better.
Ilya sighed fondly, handing the phone over, "It must have been early on. He didn't allow me to have photos of him said for so long, I remember waiting for him to fall all the way asleep before taking it. Must have been after my father died so... long time ago. Start of us being serious serious."
David cocked his head to the side, "I sometimes forget how long you boys have been together. It's hard to keep track when you had to hide it for so long." He looked at Yuna as he said the last part, they shared a sad smile. It was a smile that also was full of pride, for both of their sons to be able to come out.
"I also forget how long it has been. He is just always there. The secret was fun in its own way for a while, very early on. Got tiring quickly..." Ilya said, seemingly just thinking out loud, and trailing off in a way that Yuna now knew meant not to ask about for her own sanity.
"Did you ever have to lie or hide to us before you came out? I know Shane mentioned once or twice, excluding Rose, but we also had talked briefly before you came out." Yuna questioned.
"No I can't think of... oh... no I can think of one..." Ilya trailed off, eyes widening and flushing slightly, not making eye contact with either of his in-law's.
"When?" Asked David, clearly confused. And then turning to his wife as he heard her gasp in a small 'oh'.
"No, that was before you got together... right?" Yuna asked the question like she didn't really want the answer.
"I mean, technically, but only by about 5 minutes." Ilya shrugged, not bothering in acting shy anymore.
"Shane is going to kill you for telling me that, I did not need to know that." Yuna said standing, laughing lightly in a way as she began to pace.
"Care to fill me in?" David asked, looking between his slightly hysterical wife and Ilya.
"We ran into one another in an elevator once. She was waiting for one to go down... I was going up to see a certain someone." Ilya stated in a way that was so nonchalant Yuna started laughing even harder.
David simply stared at Ilya, mouth slightly open and eyes squinted as he tried to decipher what he meant, and then he was also laughing.
"Shane is going to kill me."
