Expectations

Summary:

Making a face, Regulus asks, “Did you hear that?”

Pandora shrugs, “Could be worse.”

“I guess I’ve got bigger expectations,” Regulus says, unsettled.

“Yeah, having James as your boyfriend will do that... not that I’d know,” Pandora ruminates, taking a sip of her Cosmopolitan.

The one where Regulus and James break up and Regulus has to get back into the game

Notes:

If not clear enough from tags, this fic is heavily inspired by You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, so credits to Olivia Rodrigo for the idea and lyrics used.
Also, if you have background knowledge on Regulus Black and his friends, the scenes with his friends will seem better written.
I'd link my playlist, but people from school know my account, so.
P.S. If any formatting seems weird it's because I messed up when I was moving my work over to ao3

Chapter Text

For the past year, my life has been utterly consumed by the man that is James Potter.

Three months ago, on September 3rd, we ended things. For months, we argued about small things, and the animosity built up. I was scared of losing myself in the bright light that is James Potter. With James, things always felt too much or never enough.

After the breakup, we tied up loose ends, collected our belongings, and agreed to stay away until things cooled down. Telling Sirius was harder; he’s James’ best friend and my older brother. I don’t know what James told him; I said it was mutual.

They say it takes half the time you were together to get over someone. In that case, I have three more months; however, I would say I’m close to getting there now. After all, we didn’t end on good terms; I’m not particularly gutted over it.

Now that I’ve given you some background, I’ll let you know that at this moment, I’m on my way to Sirius and Remus’ flat. They’re in the process of moving; after their wedding, they scrimped and saved and finally managed it. Being Sirius’ brother, he reckoned I ought to lend a hand. I suppose he’s right.

After our breakup, Sirius has avoided bringing James up around me at all costs. Which is dreadfully apparent after tuning in on any conversation about Sirius’ friends and that part of his life.

Before James and I had even gotten together, Sirius had warned the two of us about keeping things cordial after the breakup that would surely come. That was mostly aimed at me; I guess it was written in the stars, given my personality and whatnot.

Ah, here’s the door.
